I agree, There is nothing wrong with using ideas or inspiration found in someone else's work. I myself find it flattering when someone uses an idea of mine or copies a piece that I have made.

YES! Please do a whole class on lids, I have been having trouble making them. I do try to copy you that is how I'm learning to make pottery. Thanks for all your help and time, i just love all your classes. For some reason mine do not come out round, there is a hump in them. SAD Pottery in New Mexico

Hi Simon, I love your thinking almost as much as I love your ability to throw on the wheel. It is such a great challenge to imitate the best potters...yourself figuring amongst them. We would be fortunate indeed to be able to "copy" the wonderful potters that have worked over the years. Your advice to "keep practicing" may get us a little closer to pottery "plagarism" but not exactly there! The work will always be our own. Thank you and happy new year! Sharon

I also really liked what you said about copying because I have a hard time just drawing so I look for information and I always hear "well you're not being orignal" well I already am and like you said my version won't be the same as my inspiration so it's not copying- I'm doing my take on it. People shouldn't be afraid to look for inspiration!

Different methods than I have been taught but the basic idea is the same... Trying to throw lidded pots recently.... they so far have been coming out looking like giant lego heads... this should help though

Hey Simon! Have you given up on your "garage studio"? What is the problem? Is it too cold? You can get insulated doors for not too much money. My garage is a bit cold as well, but I added some rMAX panels to the ceiling and indoor/outdoor carpeting to the floor and it made a big difference (around $200). Thanks for talking about copying other people's concepts and techniques. I have to agree. Can you imagine if the first person to make a ceramic bowl said, "now nobody copy this!"

What are the odds that no matter what pot or painting you see today wasn't copied from somebody else from years ago. It would be almost impossible to be totally original. I say if you like it, and want to make it...go for it. Perhaps you may even improve on it. Keep practicing.
