Take Me Back to Eden is the third studio album by English rock band Sleep Token. Produced by the band's frontman Vessel with Carl Bown, it was released on 19 May 2023 by Spinefarm Records. The album serves as the final part of a trilogy also featuring the group's first and second albums, Sundowning and This Place Will Become Your Tomb. Six songs from Take Me Back to Eden were released as singles: "Chokehold", "The Summoning", "Granite", "Aqua Regia", "Vore" and "DYWTYLM".
Background
Sleep Token released the first two songs from their as-yet untitled third album, "Chokehold" and "The Summoning", on 5 and 6 January 2023, respectively.[3] These were followed on 19 and 20 January by "Granite" and "Aqua Regia", respectively.[4] The slew of releases led to a rapid increase in popularity for the band, who grew from having reportedly "less than 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify at the beginning of January" to having over 1.58 million by the end of the month.[5] "The Summoning", in particular, became one of Sleep Token's most popular songs to date, reaching number 1 on the Spotify Top 50 Viral Songs chart, as well as receiving over 1 million views on KZfaq within two weeks.[6] It was also the band's first song to register on the official UK and US charts, reaching number 14 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart,[7] number 26 on the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart,[8] and number 2 on the Billboard Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart.[9]
Take Me Back to Eden was officially announced on 16 February 2023, alongside the release of fifth single "Vore". The album was described in its announcement as "Part 3 of a trilogy, a spectacular chapter-closer in the ongoing Sleep Token saga, a saga that kicked off in earnest with debut album Sundowning".[10] "DYWTYLM" was issued as the sixth pre-release track from the album on 23 April 2023.[11]
Composition & lyrical themes
The album takes elements of funk,[12] black metal,[12] electronica,[2] pop,[2] progressive metal,[1] and djent.[2]
The track “Take Me Back To Eden” has horror style lyrics and confusing in some point,[13] "The Summoning" is dedicated to Paganism.[

The record sounds like what plays in my head when I'm pausing to notice beautiful little details in a really chaotic piece of artwork, like a really striking movie poster. I'd imagine someone like Panos Cosmatos would be all over Sleep Token. Hell, I wonder if Jodorowsky has given them a try at some point.

I remember not being particularly happy with that original video you talked about Sleep Token in. In fact, I’ll always remember when I saw them open for Issues (fitting as all hell touring lineup that also featured Polyphia) not too long after that video, and shouting “ROCK CRITIC DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT!!!” in between songs and getting a couple weird looks from people. I’m happy to be right lol, glad to see you’re finally on board with them and willing to reevaluate what you originally thought of them. I’m not sure this is gonna by my AOTY, but it’s FOR SURE their best album.

I'm right there with you when you said that this album was the one that made you "get" the band. I've enjoyed bits and pieces of Sundowning and This Place Will Become Your Tomb, but overall they never clicked for me as much as I feel like they should have. This album is a completely different story however, I've never been attacked by so many left turns in an album and enjoyed it as much as I did.

It’s cool to see you into Sleep Token now and also kinda funny to me for a really odd reason. You’re Sundowning review was my first time ever hearing about Sleep Token, and you’re description of their sound seemed so odd I had to hear it for myself…they’ve been my favorite band ever since. 😂 So yeah, thanks for that 🙃

I will say, this is their most "cohesive" when it comes to experimenting hardcore but still making it sound like it makes sense. Probably their best to introduce people to Sleep Token. The callbacks to their previous songs (especially The Night Does Not Belong To God references) it's just solid. Personal favourites are Are You Really Ok? and Euclid

I feel like Invent Animate does the djent thing better personally, that's my AOTY. but they're pretty different albums overall, this one fuses genres more and that's more pure djent. I don't hate this record (tho I do hate Ascensionism) but I wasn't huge on it either. I like the idea and the genres they tried to fuse on their own for the most part, but imo it wasn't that well executed, even if I do get the appeal. (1)

The point about them being a really seductive band is actually one of the best ways to describe them. Even down to the vocals, definitely ASMR core haha.

Awesome to see the Sleep Token turn around! Loved this group for a while now and think this is a great album. Also worth mentioning that their sophomore album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, is also fantastic and worth listening to!

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone that kind of like their music but can't get over the singers voice? For the longest time I couldn't put my finger on why I never was able to get into Sleep Token. Then when Will Ramos and Chris Liepe put out Sleep Token covers I realized I like Sleep Token songs when someone else is singing it.

Check out zeal and ardor. Really good band that fuses old blues with black metal. Vocals are old school rock but the instrumentation and production is light years ahead of sleep token.

Now crash, I love you and have been subbed to you for years, so don’t take this the wrong way man. I hate this album. I hate it’s fuckboi imagine dragons production. I hate it’s worse breaking Benjamin vocals. And I especially hate the gimmick. The gimmick is very sincere and an interesting idea, yet they flounder it significantly. Plus, the genre fusion is god awful.

How do you feel about their second album? It was considered a letdown by some in the scene, I enjoyed it but this album is what hooked me on them too. I honestly respected them more from watching a vocal cover of Chokehold by Will Ramos.

I came into this album through the songs that Luke played on his stream. And at the beginning, I was like, ugh, just another metalcore band. But by the end of that first song, I was like, well fuck me sideways, this is not just another metalcore band. I would call it progressive metalcore, but even that doesn't seem to cover it addequately.

It's really good, but my guess is that it's going to inspire a lot of awful music that doesn't have the genuine soul that elevates Sleep Token. We are going to get a lot of shitty trap beats mixed with bland riffs.

I knew you, being one of the more open-minded of the reviewers I follow, would like this record. I really, really like it (even LOVE it in some spots). However, the only couple nitpicks I have with the record is that the drumming is slightly neutered and not as good as it was on Sundowning or This Place Will Become Your Tomb, and I'm not completely sold on those Travis Scott-esque hip-hop parts yet. Also the fact that they swapped producers from their longtime guy George Lever to Carl Bown (the guy who did the last three Bullet For My Valentine records) kinda' irks me a teensy bit. Overall, a much more understanding review than the jaded, scalding and brutal one Necrotic Nick over on Thralls of Metal gave (although TBF, it had a lot to do with his disdain for modern pop and hip-hop... so I knew he was going to hate it🤷♂).

Just came back from checking this out and I think it's pretty good so far. A bit more mellow than I'd like, but worth checking out some more. It's a little like Breaking Benjamin and Trivium had a baby.

Glad you got a lot out of it, but this is definitely the worst album I’ve heard all year lmao. Mixing Imagine Dragons shit with metalcore is viscerally ick to me Though I’m probably not the target audience anyways, I tend to like my metal way more raw and crusty

The mixing is actually quite shit, the heavier song sounds like a sandstorm och just over distorted guitars. When I listen to the summoning/vore/chockehold be it in the car or headphones it just sounds like mush, and the bass vanishes. If I put on Humanity’s Last Breath however, the heaviness is insanely better. It sounds thick and heavy, and not distorted at all. If you want to hear good mixing on a heavy album you should check the band out and compare, the mixing on Take Me Back To Eden is BAD In my opinion ofc

This album doesn't work for me. Some tracks were solid, but I don't like the vocals much, every time they try in trap they sound like cringe and the record is just plain tedious and not that interesting. Not trash, but not a record I get much out

Funny how you mentioned you liked the production, because i fucking hated it, in particular the heavy parts. The guitars especially sound like they're out of phase and the mastering on the heavy sections is so blown out and distorted it legitimately gave me a headache. Vore is probably the biggest offender in this regard.

Yup this was exactly how I felt about Sleep Token. Like it was a thing that was fine before, but only with this album do I understand not only what theyre heading towards, but also understand they hype from the fanbase. And yeah, I agree, "Prog for those who fuck" is the right term, the chad of prog I guess. I cracked up though, because when I first heard Vore I also was like "they know what they did, this was no accident, pun intended" and its funny to see some of the other people going "wahhh but metaphor tho!". I think the other way I would put it is "heavy tinged, genreless, completely sincere and effortless, love and sex appeal". I also would like to say on THIS album, the odd inflection was isntantly perfect for me, I liked how it sounded this time around. 9.5/10 for me, and yeah definitely will be in my top 5 this year, or top 3, or top spot.

Dang man, you and I are opposites. I fucking love sundowning and I still play that entire album religiously. I dug most of the singles off of this new album and I like the tracks rain and take me back to Eden, but man the rest of this album I just could not get into it all. Everyone keeps talking about ascensionism as one of the greatest songs to come out this year and I can't stand it. Aside from, do you wish that you loved me, which was a garbage pop track, ascensionism is my least favorite song on the album
