Sling TSi Wing Construction Will Take 180 - 240 hours To Build

Here are more details on how the wings on the sling TSi is put together. With 2-3 people, constructing the wing will take 1-2 weeks if your put in a lot of hours per day. The approximate build time is 180 - 240 hours.
In the previous build video here • The Wings And Fuel Tan... I gave a summary of putting the wings together. For those who are unfamiliar with the TSi aircraft, it’s a redesigned aircraft from the Sling 4. And one of the major components redesigned on this plane are the wings. The new wings are narrower, they have flush rivets for less drag, and winglets at the tip. All this combined helps the airplane climb and cruise faster.

Another great video, useful to see the fuel tanks and dipping the rivets in the sealant. Good info in regards to drilling out holes and then blowing out any debris. Thanks for my weekly Mojo fix MIke :-)

Very nice Mike. Serious progress. For many people the idea of building an airplane is daunting. You're showing an excellent build process by showing the multiple parts that are put in the airplane to complete it. The simplicity of building the parts and then melding them together keeps the job simple and keeps one motivated. When you are able to do other aircraft I would like to see the Grumman Yankee revisited. The aluminum bonded skin is an anomaly in aircraft construction and that started out as an experimental before Grumman American purchased the rights. And again, if you ever get out this way and want to visit the Tailwind as an aircraft to review let me know. Doran Jaffas Central Lower Michigan

Well done Mike. This is looking like the aircraft I need to build. If you are constantly installing the incorrect size rivet get a rivet gauge and mark the holes with a sharpie marker helps a lot when sizes keep changing. Overhaul A&P mechanic /PP. ATL Wish I could join you on this build. Watching and supporting. Keep riveting Mojo

It’d be interesting to see a video on what maintenance costs and problems you’re expecting the first 5-10 years. And when like a car, do you expect to have more serious maintenance problems and costs and of what kind?

My friend Frank told me that there were basic errors in the profile for most wing geometry data which had been found. He was an A & P mechanic for over 20 years. You might want to look into that on your basic wing design before you build. Unfortunately, he has passed now - and it was well above my pay grade, but he said that it had a real cost to the L/D Co-Eff of most wings. This was around 10-15 years ago that this error was found in the formulas from my understanding.

Why would you not spray all the wing internal parts and inner skin surfaces with zinc chromate primer to protect against surface corrosion before attaching the skins?

Did you need to debur the main skins after drilling?

The holes are already drilled, its done for minor adjustment and fitting. It won't take off much material at all.

I've wondered the same thing throughout this entire project. I took a sheet metal "primer" seminar at a Synergy, a build assist outfit in Oregon in April of 2019. The instructor was a USAF F-15 mechanic/mechanic instructor and sheet metal tech. In teams of two students, we built two of van's airfoil practice kits. The sheet metal and press-formed parts are pre-drilled. Components are clecoed together, match drilled, and riveted. The process and importance of deburring drilled holes was beat into us like the proverbial dead horse. Not sure if in this case, deburring is just not addressed, or The Airplane Factory has come up with a way to eliminate the process.
