In the second Slo Mo Rewind, I revisit my life changing chat with one of my heroes, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. She is a Harvard-trained and published neuroscientist. In 1996 she experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Her memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documenting her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery, spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list and is still routinely the #1 book about strokes on Amazon.
In 2008 she gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 26 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Jill was chosen as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Soul Series” webcast.
In her newest book, Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life, Dr. Jill debunks the myths that we use only 10% of our brain as well as the idea that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking.
Listen as we discuss:
- What is 'Whole Brain Living'?
- What she's learned since her hit TED talk.
- The four characters of the brain:
- Character 1: Left thinking tissue is the rational brain that defines the boundaries of ourselves as individuals, has language, and seeks material gain.
- Character 2: Left emotional tissue that sounds the alarm to protect us against the unfamiliar.
- Character 3: Right emotional tissue that lives to only experience in the present moment without comparison or time.
- No conflict can be solved by two Character 2's, and the present moment is perfect.
- Character 4: Right thinking tissue that embodies the thinking consciousness of the universe, knows no boundaries, and exists only to love, be grateful, and experience blissful euphoria. Purely in awe and blissful euphoria.
- Is love a thought or an emotion?
- Our first job as human beings is to love one another. Period.
- The left brain should not be the boss.
- The B.R.A.I.N. Huddle
- How Jill gave her TED talk because she wanted us to love and revere each other, not her.
- Character 4 is who we are. The others are so noisy.
- Her book, Whole Brain Living, is her roadmap to accomplish her life's work - the reason why she recovered from her stroke.
- Psychedelics can induce similar states that bring us to Character 4.
- Character 2 is the one that needs to go into rehab in order to break addictions.
- Is there a masculine and feminine divide, or is just a cultural construct?
- Life knows that the present moment is fabulous.

I recently heard Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor speak about the 4 characters and was looking for another interview to get another perspective - and this interview was it! I thank you both! I too do my best to practice unconditional love,and...as a result my character 2 monkey mind of fear, doubt and worry never kicks in any more. I honestly believe I live from Character 4 most of my day. But it took me 55 years to so...as prior to that I pretty much lived in my character 2. I am a student of quantum physics, law of attraction and epigenetics and I also work in the death service industry. Dr. Jill's perspective is a fresh and added way to look at how the universe works. From my studies alone, I have come to believe we are all pure, positive, loving and compassionate energy at our very core, and over time we become contiditoned by our well meaning parents ( I now recognize I was one of those parents), teachers, religious leaders and society at large. But we can begin to take our power back and enjoy every step of the way on our journey and manifest the joyful life we desire. I actually wrote a poem called "Be the LOVE "and another called " What If There Was No Death" and they both speak of connecting to our innate self, which is this oneness with everything that you both speak about. It is on my FB page if it interests you. Blessings to you both and thank your spreading the love! XO

Mo, I met you a couple of years ago. Your shared experience continues to carry me through life. I hope we get to meet again in London. Here's to continuing our insightful journeys. I'd like to add to Socrates' dictum: 'The unexamined life is not worth living'... truth be told: 'An over-examined life is not living either'. 😁🙏

I can't help but felt an immense surge of love whenever Jill mentioned we are here to love others. Even if it was just a brief couple of seconds, I wanted to forgive, to give, and just love the people who've come to visit my life, who once made me felt so appreciated and loved, instead of focusing on what I'm lacking, or not having. Thank you for having Jill on your podcast, Mo. As always, I've learned something and was touched in an incredible way. ♡

In the 1980s I caught an article on research on the brains of advanced Tibetan Buddhist meditators (monks) who could go into blissful states of expanding out & becoming one w the universe. They told the researchers they thought less not more in those states. The researchers expected their brains to get more active, & their brains got less active, but the researchers were surprised to find that small region of tissues that we develop to separate ourselves from the universe by distinguishing our skin container boundaries in the left parietal lobe went completely dormant. The researchers were really surprised by this. (They didn't really listen closely when the meditators explained it beforehand.). Apparently one can develop this ability voluntarily but it might require a decade or two in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.

Thank you so, so, so much Mo. I loved this the first time around on audio only and you introduced me to Jill and her work back then. And I can only say that I loved this even more this time on video and again it made me cry. Humans such as you two, are the absolute definition of love in this Universe in so many indescribable ways. And my four characters, Alison, Chicken, Petra and Mary, are interminably grateful for knowing yours. xx

Soo ! interesting… the universal language could perhaps be mathematics but the universe’s consciousness is love, and it is one love in a way where we are all that love and all that love is one… ? It reminds me of a bbc documentary called our secret universe the hidden life of a cell, where even there everything seems connected
