I really appreciate you taking the time to modify and examine a player like this. To be honest, I would have taken this thing outside to be run over by my car after the first record got damaged!

You keep coming back to this record player! You might be interested to know that the slot in concept actually goes back to at least the 1940's. Philco made one with a retracting spindle. 78 rpm only, it didn't spit the record out at you. See here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZigaMVkspq9c30.html

Put ya a nice new black diamond stylus in that beast buddy....with even moderate use ya wouldn’t have to change the needle for years....and while your at it set the tracking at exactly five grams...

My guess is the purpose of the spring is to allow the record to play while the unit is upright.

Interesting. That appears to be a 3-speed motor (notice the five electrical connections; the 2-speed variant just has four). I guess it simplifies inventory to just use the 3-speed model in 2-speed applications.

Here is what I would do. I'd start with a dime above the cartridge and move up in weight and once I was happy I'd just super glue it on to the top of the tone-arm. On a normal record player I would never even consider this, but on this "toy", I think that may be the best solution. Just an educated opinion. Good luck and take care.

It's a fascinating slot record player in terms of concept, but not in terms of the manufacturer's use of cheap materials and dodgy mechanics. Frankly, I'd never buy a unit like that because I wouldn't want to subject any of my 45's to that machine. I wouldn't even want to risk damaging my worst condition 45's in that machine and most of the 45's I've collected over the years are at least in VG+ condition, but most are even better in excellent to near mint condition with no scratches whatsoever. Thanks for the thorough video though, Recordology. :)

I mean, That is a heavy tracking force, If you use styrene 45s, You probably won't hear the sound quality degrade as they don't usually sound great anyway.

interesting breakdown of this unit, i like the style of it and color but i don't think i would take a chance on it. may have to be upgraded a little before i would have confidence in it's performance, thanks for sharing this.

If I had this I might modify it. Maybe make a bluetooth speaker out of that amp. Does it output stereo but they just set it up for just one speaker.

It is a Bluetooth speaker as well....im sure its stereo until the single speaker.

@@Recordology Maybe there is a point where the signal is Y'ed to mono then it goes to the speaker. I was thinking of just the amp from this thing being in a box with the speaker or two speakers and making a small boombox out of it and forgetting about the turntable since it seems rough on records.

So I’ve considered that unit but I saw the Vweslife video on it and I’m scared it will chew up my styrene singles. Did yours come like his were the tracking speed was super heavy and you had to go inside and mod it for it to work?

I would not trust that tracking reading. You stated that it’s pulling against you when you measured it. Unplug it, put a record on it and then measure the tracking force.

Looks 👍 like ya pulled this thing back out of the closet. Sorry it ruined your Dave Brubeck Take 5 album. Don't worry about being stupid, you weren't. I could have been more stupid with things I have ✔ done in my life. Sounds 👍 like they sell a special needle/tonearm 👌 kit for this record player, one with a reduced 🏋 weight tonearm. Again, maybe ya were missing a vital magnet, and ordered one, which both clamps the record securely in place, and regulates tonearm pressure simultaneously. Your friend Jeff.
