Joan Crawford is very subtle and controlled here until her character knows that she is doomed and hides a terrible secret. Both women gave incredible performances . I don't believe they hated each other as much as people made out they were survivors and at this moment in time needed each other. You can't take your eyes of them and that is great screen acting!

Wonderful film. 50 years later, I still get such a kick out of it. Davis' emotional transition (spoken through her eyes) at 2:23 from remorseful to revengeful is one of the greatest moments on film. (Davis tops this only once in Little Foxes when she sits on a couch and watches, steely eyed, as her husband crawls out of the room and up the stairs).

There is no denying that Bette Davis is an absolute master of her craft. However, there is something so captivating about Joan Crawford. When I think of a classic Hollywood movie star, I think of Joan Crawford.

Two of the all-time best performances. I don't know why people compare them; they were 2 totally different types of actors. Joan was more of a Star, and Bette was more of an actress. In today's terms, it's like comparing #JuliaRoberts and #MerylStreep. Both are fine actresses, but Julia is more of a star and Meryl is more like Davis in that she becomes each role she plays, whereas Julia is Julia no matter what she plays. Bette and Joan both gave compelling performances. Sure Bette had 2 Oscars, and Joan had one, but Joan should have gotten a supporting Oscar for #TheWomen and an Oscar for #Humeresque. Bette should have gotten another one for #AllaboutEve.

All the campiness aside, these are two solid pros. Notice the take that starts at 2:37. It's a complex take with lots of staging, positioning changes, and emotional shifts, and they really nail it. It's perfect. The film was shot quickly on a very low budget, so they probably had to get it right in one or two takes. Real pros.

Guys please stop comparing there two living legends. I love Bette Davis' over acting here as it is appropriate to show Baby Jane's mental condition. I love Joan Crawford's (Blanche's) silent suffering for a misdeed of past. I adore both of these actresses. I don't know who was great than whom or what was the reason of their rivalaries with each other. I think both of them were masters of their own crafts so it's unjust to compare them.

Davis and Crawford were both sensational. In my opinion, Joan was much better an actress in the 1930's than Davis. Joan's performance in Grand Hotel was wonderful. Joan was beautiful and her acting was natural. Later Joan developed and relied on acting tricks she did not need. Bette was also great. Davis is incomparable in "Eve", "Jane", "The Little Foxes", and Mr. Skeffington. However, Bette's characterizations are so intense watching Bette Davis movies is not always pleasurable for me. I cannot watch more than two Bette Davis films in a row. I think the "feud" really escalated when Jack Warner brought Crawford to Warner Brothers. Joan won an Oscar and revived her career. Bette was at the end of her tether at Warner's. The war was over. Davis had been the queen of women's movies. However, many men did not like her. Bette had had a few dud films. Davis demanded to be let out of her contract and Jack Warner called her bluff. Bette rebounded beautifully in "All About Eve". However, Davis was not lucky in the 1950s. Her film choices were limited and few and far between. Crawford kept making film after film throughout the fifties while Bette's career stalled. Both Crawford and Davis were heavy drinkers. Bette's looks rapidly declined after "Eve" and though she was immensely talented she looked dumpy. Crawford had beautiful bone structure and remained striking and attractive. Joan and Bette were talented and what each one achieved was remarkable. I admire and enjoy them both!

A pity these two women detested each other. During the making of the film, Bette had a Coke machine installed on the set, knowing that Joan's husband was the CEO of Pepsi. In retaliation, Joan had heavy metal rods placed under her long skirt for the scene when Bette had to drag her across the floor, causing Bette to wrench her back. In the beating scenes, Joan accused Bette of hitting a bit too thoroughly. Yikes!

There are pictures of Shearer and Crawford sometime in the late 1950s sitting at the same table at an event. There was tension between them in the 30s for sure, but I feel like that dissipated as the years went by. Norma Shearer retired in the early 40s and Joan Crawford became an Academy Award winner. There wasn't any competition between them, unlike with Crawford and Davis who were still working actresses during their later years.

Having to play opposite Davis meant Crawford couldn't rely on her usual trick box of pouts, smirks and moues. She knew she had to bring her A game or Davis would wipe the floor with her. Davis, for her part, played beautifully off of Crawford's newfound authenticity and intensity. The competition between the two women made them both finer actresses, nowhere more so than in the final scene on the beach, where they each, in their own way, break your heart. 'Then you mean, all this time, we could have been friends?'
