I don't know why people say this was a terrible movie, i thought it was amazing, it is hard to watch some scenes but Faye Dunaway's performance is one for the record books as one of the most memorable roles of all time, no one has ever forgotten about it, everytime people bring up the name Faye Dunaway I don't automatically think of "Chinatown" or "Network," I think of either "Bonnie & Clyde" or "Mommie Dearest."
@hankaustin70915 жыл бұрын
The only person that ever said this was a terrible movie was Faye Dunaway herself.... she didn't realize her acting was way over the top until the premiere of the movie in NYC (she didn't watch any of the daily "rushes"), and everyone was laughing really hard at the "no more wire hangers.. EVER" scene (among others). She's slammed it AND her performance ever since. She's stated on several occasions the director should have pulled her back from all that over-acting, but, he liked what she was doing and thought it was Oscar-worthy...
@11rokerito5 жыл бұрын
Faye was brilliant and nobody criticizes her role in the film. What people criticize and dislike is the film by how they shot the image of the great Joan Crawford. Even Faye herself does not want to talk about the movie because she knows it is not entirely true and she was fond of Crawford, who in her life spoke very well of Dunaway. In addition to being discredited because it is a series B movie.

The only people who will ever factually know what happened between them is Christina and Joan, therefore you and all the rest of you inhumane idiots speculations, are just that, speculations. Any THOUGHTFULL person, knows the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I personally side more with christina because not only do you have to consider the fact that, 1. She wrote it after Joan died, so why would she wait so long, if she wanted "Revenge" that badly. 2. Look it up, Joan actually says the word SLEEPSAFE in her audio version of her book, "My Way Of Life", therefore proving that there was infact a sleepsafe that she used to tie Christopher down to his bed, at night, and with only STRICT permission to get out of it. 3. She drank 120 proof alcohol. That pretty much explains where the Night Terrors started, but I also ask you, what kind of human being discredits a victim of child abuse? Go burn in hell.

@@badgurl5758 It's true, the compulsions are rough. One of the things that caught my attention is how aggressively she washes herself for her morning routine at the beginning of her day and getting dressed, I'm the opposite. I feel like I "can't" wash myself that thoroughly until I know I have nothing left to do that day, so I can immediately crawl into clean sheets. First in the day would be a "light" shower because if I do a "thorough" shower and skincare routine and all that I won't want to do anything at all and "have" to do it again at night anyway. During rough or depressive periods where it gets worse there would be times where if I left the house even just to grab the mail I would "have" to change my clothes. If I had to get up to go to the bathroom during sleep, I "have" to put on socks before my bare feet touch the floor because if my feet touch the floor I'll "have" to wash them again and then change my sheets before I "sully" them, resulting in a laundry basket full of socks from one night because once I've worn a pair and taken them off I can't wear them again. I've been doing a lot better lately, which is nice.

Most were true as they get. When Christopher did an interview days after Joan's death, he recalled several abusive altercations he had with Joan after Christina was sent to boarding school. One of them was when he was diagnosed with a sleepwalking disorder at 12. Instead of taking the doctor's advice to send Christopher away to seek proper treatment, Joan literally strapped him to his bed for a year. It got him out of the sleepwalking, but it traumatized him greatly because of the extremes she went to get him over it. This incident was in Christina's book among with other abuses and when he was 18, Christopher left Joan's home after being unable to put up with how she treated his older sister along with him. Most denied the story including Joan's favorite children, Cathy and Cynthia(Cindy). Both Christina and Christopher pointed out that those two had it much easier than what she put the older kids through.

I agree. This opening and the music had great promise for a good bio-pic. Then it joyously entered the world of camp and hilarity. I mean wasn't their anyone on set who tried to pull the reigns in on Fayes crazy-ass performance? In a way I'm glad their wasn't. What a riot.

I think the opening of "Funny Girl" is just as impressive. Fanny (it's evening of course because she has to perform that night) walks in to the scene, from behind, with her to-die-for leopard coat and cloche hat. And suddenly, the marquee lights up with her name. She enters the theater, and she sees a mirror. Then, with that Streisand profile, with her eyes and nose, she says, "Hello, gorgeous." She should have won the Oscar for just the opening scene alone.

This is one of my favorite scenes from any movie going back to my childhood. Watching it now, with a better understanding, it's interesting to witness the complexities of the scenes that go so much deeper than my initial, childhood mesmerization with the glamour. Scrubbing her face with a brush is so ahead of her time when we think of how well Clarisonics sell today as a means of anti-aging and exfoliating the skin thoroughly. Most people, back then especially, just used a wash cloth. She scrubs in complete and total desperation at having a youthful appearance at a time and in a career where appearances meant everything. A woman's sole value was in her looks. In her mind, she was always one face scrub (one wrinkle) away from potentially losing out to someone younger, fresher, hotter. Also, she mentions her mother bringing men home when she was a child. I half wonder if she hadn't been abused in her youth by some of these men. I think the film eludes to that being a huge contributing factor to her obsession with cleanliness.

And they passed it right on down to their high strung daughters, me included. I still rinse my face and hair in cold water and to keep cells alive. My father always said "money does not buy happiness, it's the acts that you perform with it that bring the happiness to your life." Such a gorgeous and totally modern home she lived in, considering it was 1939! But the reality was Joan didn't live in a gigantic mansion like that; it was more Mediterranean and looked more old-fashioned. I think this was a set for the movie. Dang, a freezer in her bathroom, three shower heads, and a coffee percolator right in her bathroom! And her home looks air conditioned, but that wasn't around then, at least for houses
@ChristoRay7710 жыл бұрын
Well, Hollywood movie stars lived utterly differently from the rest of the Western World (they still do, but the gap has closed up a little - I mean, most of us have a shower now). They had the cash to purchase the biggest and best most-up-to-the-minute Moderne mansions. Crawford’s home here actually looks *dated* for 1939 - the style is more like 1929/1930. Yes, there are photos of her real-life living room at around the same time, floating around on the web, but none of her bedroom, bathroom or closet, so we don’t know how it really looked anyway. Also, there *was* A/C in homes then - Norma Shearer (no friend of Joan’s!) had her and Irving Thalberg’s Santa Monica home sealed and air-conditioned throughout - in the early 1930s.
@jondstewart10 жыл бұрын
I thought that home was totally modern for 1939! The bedroom looked like a luxury department store! And I thought until the early 1950's NOBODY had air conditioning in their homes; it was strictly a large big city building and luxury hotel thing starting in the late 1920's and ice blocks used.
@MVR32610 жыл бұрын
I also love how so much is told to you about the character with no dialogue only though visuals, the elaborate bathroom ritual, the coffee percolater and so on, not to mention fine editing. Then after the whole anonymous introduction when she finally turns around and we see her face, is almost worthy of applauds .
