In this video I take a small log of black walnut and make it into a beautiful bowl. This technique works great for smaller sized turnings and helps maximize the amount to lumber you can salvage from a smaller log.

Bowl looks great I think you did a great job

When cross-cutting that log it should be supported in a "V" notch jig - the blade will try to force the wood downward and it will roll into the blade, jamming it.

that would have been a very smart idea. it makes me nervous that the log would not be true to the shape I was envisioning. also, that never occurred to me 😅

Makes me want to plug in my Harbor Freight lathe and start turning again. I think my hand has healed pretty good. I lost 3 fingers when the guitar wire got caught in the chuck while I was trying to put burn marks on my bowl. DON'T wrap the wire around your fingers while burning., I learned the hard way.

Damn dude. I'm so sorry for what happened. Don't blame yourself we all make mistakes, some of us just get lucky. This guy is a little reckless with the power tools.

Hey Keith, just a suggestion. Any time you cut a round log on a band saw it would be wise to put some small wedges on the front side to keep it from rolling forward. Some times band saw will grab it and you could get hurt. I don't want to see that. Man you need to think about your safety, you pulled the forester bit out without holding on to the chuck. If if came out of the taper and started flipping around, you could be in trouble. Trying to look out for you. Take care and keep whirling, Larry

Very good points, the kind of things you don't want to learn from experience. I had a smaller long that turned on the bandsaw, grabbed the blade, and actually broke the blade with a bang. Fortunately no harm done but I have to find a better way. The long I was cutting was extremely hard wood, this walnut log looks much lighter and cut easily.
@TheWoodWhirler6 жыл бұрын
Walnut is mid range hardness wood. Depends on how dry it is. Really dry is pretty hard. Just don't push it and use wedges and shouldn't be a problem. Take care, Larry

what I do is rotate the log towards me, so the blade is cutting at the bottom. that keeps it from grabbing the top and pulling it into the blade.

Well, you got lucky on cutting the round log on the bandsaw not getting hurt. The other thing you can do is to make a jig attached to the side runner (miter gage runner) then attach a piece of plumbing hanger on the top of the jig and wrap it around the log then screw it on the other side. you also put a screw on top of the log so it will not roll while cutting through the log. ther are many turners new to the trade that put on these kind of videos on line not even paying attention to their own safety. all the while not realizing that the viewing audience may try their technique and get hurt

Mr. Veronesi...would you recommend the Delta lathe?
@KeithVeronesi6 жыл бұрын
Julian Spain yes i would. There are a bunch of good lathes out there. If you're in the market, look for one with variable speed, reverse, and a minimum of 10" swing. 12" swing would be better and above that they start getting pricey. The Nova Comet, and Rikon Mini look good also. I think grizzly may make a nice mini lathe as well. Good luck
@JulianSpain486 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your prompt reply! I have taken A as in "1" day class at Woodcraft using the Rikon Mini. I have been looking at the Delta, Jet and Shop Fox lathes. Thanks again for your advice...I'll look for those features in the lathe I eventually choose.

You got more "advice" on safety than I imagine you wanted. BUT.....Watch the part of the video where you jointed the log. The tips of the fingers on your left hand were WAY TOO close to the blades. The slightest roll, catch, hiccup or even shifting your stance could easily trim your finger nails and part of the finger as well. Went to high school with a kid who lost all four fingers on his left hand to a jointer. Just saying.
@billastell37536 жыл бұрын
Call me lazy but I would have cut the corners off that log before mounting it on the lathe. That would have saved a lot of time turning it into a round and decreased the chance of the tool catching into the log.
