As most of you know, I am one of the judges for this year's "Storm Photo of the year" contest. In this video myself, Mike Olbinkski & Mike Mezeul critique some of the images that ALMOST made the cut, but didn't quite. In this video we talk about what held these amazing images back.

Once again another really informative tutorial, Nick. It was helped by the fact that you three guys all seem to get on so well together, so the conversation flows really naturally. Your attention to details and encouraging photographers, when we nail something special in the field, to be that extar bit more demanding back home in post-processing to be sure we extract the maximum impact possible. Once again, a great tutorial, many thanks. Eamonn

Very interesting them explaining their pano shooting techniques. For some reason I always start my panos from left to right, back button focus and expose for every frame. I figure while exposing each frame there is enough overlap that the each exposure won’t be that far off from each other and it seems they’ll blend together better...

The little pano bump could be blended out smoother in post. Panos have to be shot wide because some will be distorted on the edges that have to be cropped out. It definitely needs more sky at the top. * Nature sometimes messes with you almost like it's on purpose. I got up a 3:30 AM one day. There were great clouds outside that would make a great sunrise. But the time I got to my location, set up, and waited for the sun the clouds were gone. After the sun was up and the good light was gone clouds drifted back in again. Go figure. * i wouldn't crop from the right, but I'd remove the bush. * The tractor is close th rule of thirds horizontally and vertically.

Hello to everybody, thanks for the all the explanations, I would like to question the second photo (with the tractor). Could it be that the guilty one for the problem in this photo is the automatic focus stacking in the photoshop. When we take the photos for focus stacking we have to change the focus from close to the camera to far from the camera... and that creates a little zoom (which could explain a little level difference on the horizon) and then when photoshop creates for us auto focus stacking sometimes/often it chooses some strange places as the sharp ones... so its always good to check it after. Maybe it should have been auto aligned first and then auto focus stacked? Would you agree or I'm just trying to be smarter than I really am? Thanks for the answers in advance. Good day to all :)

i love the first photo very much because it is NOT so much post processed (i say it as a retoucher). It looks almost film like. I am a bit tired to see all the portfolio shots which are often great, but where i see there is more time spend behind the monitor then behind the tripod… At least it was a photo contest not a post contest…

Some incredible weather-related shots, that's first. I don't have any weather shots like this so from the standpoint of experience with the challenge of creating compelling well-related shots, I have little experience. I say all of this as a caveat to address what is often the challenge of critiquing someone else's work. What is offered is simply an opinion, and the tendency if you don't like the opinion is to challenge the source and say, well, if you know so much, show me YOUR great images... so, well, as I said, I don't have any similar shots, nor if I did would I say that therefore makes me an expert. Moving on...since the viewer of an image is arguably as important as the image itself, I feel like I have an opinion worth sharing, so I will. My reaction to the images presented here is #1, to agree they wouldn't/shouldn't make the cut. That said, my reasoning is a bit different than some of the comments, and tends to be more composition-centric than post-processing centric. So for example, the first shot of the road and rainbow... I felt like the composition was unbalanced...very right-heavy, and although the road is a leading line, the point of a leading line is generally to take you through the image, or at least to the main subject idea. In that respect it succeeds by taking you to one end of the rainbow. However, the rainbow itself also acts as a leading line and when you follow the rainbow to the left side of the image, there's nothing there for you. So to me, that imbalanced composition is what's lacking in this image. Similarly the incredible storm cell with the tractor...composition is what I think holds this image back. Because of the unusual nature of the storm cell (and certainly in a collection of storm-related photos) makes it a main subject, and most likely THE main subject. The tractor could very well be an excellent supporting element in the frame, but it's central location tends to compete for attention as the main subject idea. To get to the storm, your eyes generally have to go through the tractor first...and therefore to me, that compositional choice is why this image didn't make the cut. Regarding the tornado photo, Nick I completely agree with your assessment regarding the unfortunate (again composition) aspect of the business end of the tornado not being visible but rather being obscured by the trees. While some might argue that introduces some mystery and allows the user to use their imagination, I would argue it's very much similar to clipping off the wing of a bird in flight shot... It would have been a much more interesting photo I think if you could see the touch down point, or at least the ground where the tornado would be touching down... I thoroughly enjoy this video, and I have great respect for photographers that not only demonstrate the understanding of weather-related opportunities and the skill to anticipate them, but more than that, the courage to put themselves in a generally risky position to be able to make the captures. My comments about this photos doesn't diminish one iota my total respect for their efforts.

Great commentary from three really fabulous photographers. I am fascinated by the Devil's Tower image. I understand the points of criticism, but what stands out to me is that the tower seems to be leaning backwards. This is inevitable if you use a wide angle lens and tilt it up. Here it seems to be checkmate, since you have to use a wide angle lens to get the entire composition in but I suspect that the road points uphill. If I had a really wide angle lens I could set the camera level anyway and then crop the composition out of the top of it. Personally I would use a perspective transformation if that were allowed by the contest rules. So, are others bothered by the lean or is it just me? If they are, how would they correct for it?
@NickPage
@NickPage 3 жыл бұрын
honestly I haven't seen it in person in many years, so i am not sure exactly how it is supposed to look, so it didn't catch my eye . I am sure there is some wide angle distortion going on.. but i dont think its all that extreme. Man made straight lights are far more annoying and distracting when they have perspective distortions. Corrections for perspective as long as they are minor are allowed.

@@NickPage , thanks for the personal reply. I'm pretty certain that basalt columns like that are vertical. To me, a vertical cliff has greater visual impact than a sloping one. We don't get flat slopes in New England. I don't know if this particular situation involves one. I do remember many years back being on a flat slope in British Columbia. Darned if a river wasn't powering itself uphill.... All an optical illusion of course. None of this takes much away from the quality of the image and certainly not from the criticism of you three. I learned a lot from the video.
