Greetings earthling... first of all...I'm a 65 year old, retired construction worker, who dabbles in everything...I am creating 2 light bars, to be mounted on my vehicle (outdoors), which support 4 moving-head lights...these bars are 41" long and made of wood. I have drilled holes for 66 INDIVIDUAL, 5mm RGB, COMMON CATHODE LEDs...at all different angles and such (in each bar). I have a DMX512 controller and need the parts that go in-between...and to the 66 INDEPENDANT lights on each bar (132 total). I've watched several of your videos and like your style...PLEASE keep it up!!!

This was a huge help for me. I didn't realize adding differential receivers I had to click the blue button in the middle. I kept adding smart receivers to each port (Port 17 for A, Port 18 for B, etc,) which obviously didn't work for me. I saw the RIGHT way to do this on port 17 thanks to your great thoroughness and you saved me hours of frustration. Thanks Jeff!

After working on the SR's ALL DAY yesterday, the description above is correct " Smart (chain-able) differential deceivers". MY own fault, really thought I could 'extend' 4 ports (1-4) out to model use 1024 pixel each, THEN add SR#2 to port 5, and extend ANOTHER 4 ports out to model.... doesn't work that way... but learned a lot, and as always enjoy the knowledge!! Hi Jeff, Not sure if your monitoring for questions anymore on Smart Receivers. I have 2 Falcon 16V3 Controllers and using 2 Smart Receivers on each so total of 4. I've sent the dip switches appropriately and triple checked it, I've also made sure A has Term dips off and B has Term dips On for both. I've verified all 3 wires are appropriately seeded to Date, GND, V. I cut off all pre-tin ends on pigtails, and did a tug test. I also daisy chained A to B correctly and have 1 CAT6 cable back to Falcon 16V3 and in top black Diff port. My Falcon has Software 2.59. I also use LOR not Xlights. In FPP I selected Port Config to 1a,2a,3a,4a and 1b,2b,3b,4b, I also turned Port 3 & 4 to Pixel Data and 1 & 2 to Serial. Here are the issues I need Help with: 1) When I power on the board before I power through the Controller all 8 Props light up White - Is this Normal? 2) When I turn on my Falcon Controller and have the Cat6 plugged in my Smart Receivers doesn't have all 4 LED lights on. a) One Board only 1 LED light on. b) Second Board I have 2 LED lights on. 3) When I test using the Smart Receiver test button all 8 props light up correctly in all 4 modes, but when I use Test on Falcon 16V3 nothing happens 4) When I hold the test button on the Smart Receiver I get all 4 lights to come on then the props turn off, If I power cycle the Props turn back on but this time instead of all white some have 1 red pixel, some have anywhere between 15 to 20 pixels and others don't have any pixels on. Any advise on what to try and test is GREATLY APPRECIATED.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas Жыл бұрын
Powering on may cause a spike on the data line and the pixels interpret that as "oh, well I need to be on." One of my matrices does that at power-on (some of the lights come on), but it goes off after a couple of seconds and otherwise operates normally. #2, I've been told that not seeing all 4 lights could indicate a faulty Ethernet cable. When I saw that and swapped the cable, I got 4 lights. Maybe try different cables (get the first one working first). #3 indicates either a cable problem OR something on the controller is not configured properly. Testing from the controller should light everything up. No clue on #4 unless it's a bad receiver. Anytime I test from the receiver, they all come on as expected.

@@CanispaterChristmas Thanks Jeff, I also spoke to David Pitts and he said to change all 4 Ports to Pixel Data as I am confusing the receivers having Port 1 & 2 in Serial. Hoping that fixes it. Just started this hobby trying to get ready for next year and have been watching alot of your videos and you are the only reason I have gotten as far as I have and I thank you for that. I just got my Pi 4 and got that all setup with your help and I got my f16v3 coming hopefully the end of this week. My question is on the Pi setup you have us setting up a show network and our home network but I see on the f16v3 you only have your home IP in the controller. Can you explain how you connect the Pi to the controller and also are able to connect to the controller through the web on your home network as well? Thank you for everything you do for the community.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have my bench F16 connected to my home network because it's easier to control that way. My show F16 is on my show network. That's why I say to connect the Pi wlan0 to your home network and the Pi eth0 for your show. You can go directly from the Pi to the F16 or go through a network switch (makes no difference). That way all the show traffic stays off your home network and you still have control if needed. Accessing the controller is more difficult and you kinda need to know some computer networking. The Pi acts as a router between the two networks. There's a checkbox at the bottom of the network page in FPP that allows routing between the two networks. Then you need to set the controller's gateway to the Pi's eth0 address. Then you need to add a route on your computer to the show network. OR, plug your computer into the show network, configure the controller and don't touch it again. :) You really shouldn't need to make any adjustments once you get it set up.

Awesome video Jeff! Super thorough and now I can see how these differential receivers can be a total game changer. On a unrelated note, do you know how to use Xlights for AC lights controlled by a LOR controller? I've seen the F16V3 used as a DMX bridge for the LOR controller and I think Keith Westley demonstrated a way to sequence traditional 120V AC lights. Just curious to see if you know anything about this because I have a bunch of AC lights with my pixels. Thank you! Can't wait for your final build and 2019 Christmas show.

Thanks! Either run them from an F16V3 or I believe there is a dongle directly to the computer for LOR - no idea how that works though. I believe Gil has experience with those and probably hundreds of other people in the forums or xLights Zoom room, but I have never run them together. I also think there is a separate AC Light set of "effects" you can enable in xLights somewhere. So, I know the option exists, but don't have any experience with them.

Great video as always. Last year I had a mega tree with 800 pixels, ran off one port of a F16 (data only, power & injection thru a distro board). This year I plan on adding an additional tree and placing both 100' or so away from my controller. My question is: I will continue using my F16 controller, If I use a Smart Differential Receiver, actually two, one for tree 1, the other tree 2, are they capable of running 800 pixels per receiver, and, could the 800 pixels still be ran from one port of the receiver? Keep up the good work, and thanks in advance.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
800 per port will be split by the two receivers so you'll need to split the strings up, but you can easily run that many with two receivers assuming you don't have any expansion boards on the F16. Not sure how you have it set up, but you could assign two ports of 800 to the receivers and run two strings of 400 on each tree.

The differential receivers just allow you to extend the distance between the controller and the props. Not sure of all the tech involved - you'd have to talk to David Pitts. Smart receivers do some auto-adjusting (they only care about # of pixels for the entire chain vs having to set pixel counts on each board).

DMX1 has 4 serial ports. DMX 2 & 3 only have 1. You can use a receiver with all of them, but only the 1st will support 4 ports. Have a look at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8lxi9yUvLS3qIE.html

You can have 9 receivers. The chain connected to DMX1, all 4 ports will work. The chains connected to 2 & 3, only 1 port will work. But if you're planning to run that many receivers, you're probably better off getting a differential expansion board. All 4 ports work on all of those outputs.

Can a 4 port differential handle 794 12v pixels? I plan on having a 30X100 mega tree using 15 ports off an F16 with the star using port 16. Then I want to add 7- 32 node arches, 6- 70 node mini trees, 2- 48 node canes and 1- 54 node wreath and control these with a 4 port differential receiver . Would a differential receiver work for this or would I need another F16 for these props?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 3 жыл бұрын
Oh. If you connect a receiver to an F16, it steals one to four ports from the main board (you assign which ones in the serial tab). The actual number of pixels you're talking about aren't a problem for the controller. You might want an expansion board to add more ports. I'd advise checking into the xlights zoom room tonight to get some planning help as I think you just need more ports the way you're approaching this.

Jeff, I have watched this many times and asked support forums, I can not get this working. I am using an F16 and one Smart receiver to do some mini trees out by the street. I have the boxes built and testing. The smart receiver will runs strings in test mode fine but when setup as a smart receiver in the F16 and the smart board set to A and terminated the first string is flickering and others doing nothing. I only have Data LED 1 and 4 lit up when plugged in, I have tried multiple cat5e patch cables, it is plugged into the 4 channel port on the F16 not network. The only anomaly that I am working with is I use Vixen not xLights. I can not setup the controller with in Vixen, so what else do I need to setup in the F16? Serial Ports out....what do they need to be? Pixel or DMX and so on? I am on FalconChristmas and have a thread started with pictures of the settings.

OK. So first, I assume you did the firmware update on the F16 for the chainable cards. 2nd, you need to assign up to 4 of the ports on the serial output page to be served by output 1 of the DMX output port. Port 1 has 4 serial ports, the other two only have 1. How we doing so far?

😂 The RJ-45 ports don't support any pixels. They are for connecting to differential receivers. The green 4-pin connectors on the receivers are for the pixels. Number if pixels is determined by how many expansions you have and how many pixels you allocate to the expansion (it's adjustable). Really tho, most people let xLights do the allocation and programming of the controller. It really is much easier that way.

I want to keep them ALL separated, so that is where I'm uncertain and do not wish to waste my SS money on the wrong stuff!!! I am novice thinking, and it looks like those recommended Falcon F16 v3 (TIMES 3) and 6 expansion modules, gives me 144 "ports" (and have room for)...which I am novice figuring is my only way to do this??? I realize the wire needs to be very compact too...so please recommend something small and together in 3 conductor or 4??? Yeah, I sent you an email on 4/3. Maybe filtered by your SPAM filter? If you are using discreet LEDs, the F16 won't help - it just sends out data. With pixels I show on the channel, each bulb has a small circuit board inside that decodes the data and sets the color and brightness of the LED. With discreet LEDs, you have to supply the voltage yourself for each LED and I have no idea how you'd do that for the number of LEDs you have without some different hardware. If you want to do animation like you see in my videos, I'd suggest getting some pixels similar to the LEDs you have. Let me know if you can find my email and if not, I'll try sending another.

Hi Jeff, I'm attempting to upgrade my F16v3 from V2 (which the unit came with), to the latest version (v 2.55). However, when I update the Bootloader (as per your video) it just stays on the “Bootloader: Loading FPGA” Screen, and then doesn’t go on to the “Loading Firmware” step. Is this an issue with the older Firmware, or could it be because the Factor Reset wasn’t completed fully? I have followed the steps to perform a Factor Reset, but after I do it, I still see the static IP Address I set for the F16 come up, which makes me think a full reset didn’t take place. Any advise would be gratefully accepted.

Ok so you can connect them to a f16v3 expansion board and you can Daisy chain 3 in one line, can this be done on for all 4 ports on each expansion board as long as you don't go over pixel count? So if my math is right you would have 16 spi ports on the board and with 2 expansion boards you could have 24 more ports to plug into? Can the same be done with the f48 ? Giving you 12 ports per spot on the board port? That would give you 144 ports to plug into?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're right on the F48. You confused me on the F16. F16 DR Expansion has 4 DR ports. Each DR port can have 3 DRs for 12 ports or 48 total pixel ports. 2 DR expansion cards takes that to 96 pixel ports. HOWEVER, a second differential expansion card on the F16 requires additional power because it pulls too much for the ribbon cable. Math, ugh. Is that what you get? :)

If you setup the controller (F16v3) in xlights using the differential expansion board, do you choose "one expantion board" in the setup? If so, it adds ports 17 through 32. Do you have a video on confiquing this? I ask because the blue "+" sign is only on ports 1, 5, 9, 13. Where are the ports 17-32? Confused.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
A differential expansion board adds 4 differential ports to the controller. One differential receiver has 4 ports so 4*4 is 16. To add to the confusion, you can now chain up to 3 differential receivers now so that expands the total number of pixel ports. The main board is 1-16 and the pixel ports on the differential receivers are 17-32. The first one is 17-20, 2nd one is 21-24, etc. So if you are on the F16 config page, you would choose "one expansion board" if that's all you have. The additional ports should show up when you do that.

@@CanispaterChristmas So, 17a, 17b , 17c...18 a, 18b, 18c...ect if using three receivers each differential port. And the max pixels per port is still the same 1024, just shared from the a, b and c. Adding the expansion board means you share 1024 between 1 & 17, 2 & 18, etc. There is a slider in the upper right-hand corner on the web page that shows up allowing you to set the proportion between the two "banks." Not sure why the "+" sign only shows up on certain rows - I don't mess with that page a lot anymore since I do everything from xLights. :)

An F16 has one port (top DMX output port) that will work with a differential receiver. The other two outputs are single serial ports only, but the top one has all 4 serial ports. You assign which pixel ports are sent to the DR on the serial ports page. For example, if you set ports 5-8 (all four) on the serial page, you'd use them from the DR. If you are chaining DRs, 5a-8a is available on the first DR, 5b-8b is available on the second and 5c-8c is available on the third. You set 5, but you'd also need to set 6, 7 & 8 if you want them on the DRs.

But your 170-pixel problem makes me think there is something else set incorrectly. Make sure you've set the universe size to 512 instead of 510. 510 is exactly 170 pixels. Also, push the both the input & output down to the Falcon.

Effects are put on models. Models are assigned a port on a DR. So yes, each port on each DR can do something different. I just use the same in the demo because it's easier. 😀

If I connect the Smart Differential from the DMX 1 port on my F16V3 will it automatically update my port configuration? Right now it shows 16 ports in the web configuration-if I connect one will it update to 20 ports, then 24, etc?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
No. It steals from the 16. The serial output screen is where you assign the DMX/DR outputs. It can be 1, 5, 8, and 10 if you want or 1, 2, 3, 4. You also don't have to use all 4. If you want to add more ports to the F16, you'll need one of the expansion boards.

@@CanispaterChristmas Thanks. I'm trying to make sense of it all and starting to wrap my head around it. If I read correctly, the description for the 4-string Differential SmartReceiver says it can be daisy-chained together with other SmartReceivers (maximum three per chain) ONLY if it is being powered by an expansion board or F48 so this means I can only connect one SmartReceiver to the F16V3 DMX output, correct?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of a limitation where the Smart Receiver is only chain-able on certain outputs so check that out yourself. It's just data going across the Ethernet cable. The video was made with an F16. ... or whatever you were reading was about something else. :)

Any idea if POE has ever been considered for the boards? I've wondered whether that'd be an option in future board development to save running power too. If this has actually been done, then ignore my stoppidness lol
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
POE for the differential receivers? No, there's too much current needed for the lights. Roughly 0.06 amps per pixel depending on the pixels. 100 would be 6 amps at 100%. Way too much current for Ethernet wire.

@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it matters. There is either an arrow showing data direction or look for DI or DO on the pixel (might be tiny). DI is data in and DO is data out. Both from the pixel's perspective. So DI is data from the controller into the pixel and DO is data out of the pixel to the next pixel. Power can be from either end, but data only flows one way.

I'm absolutely loving your videos and presentations of this information. My question that I've yet to figure out - what's the advantage/disadvantage between utilizing the F16v3 versus the F48 for a new setup? I'm starting to cost out my plans for a brand new build. There's no local resource that I've been able to find yet to bounce questions off of and look over my notes. Is there a way I could send it to you for review before I start spending money?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There's more qualified people in the forums and Facebook groups to help you with that. The Wednesday night zoom call is also a good place for questions like that (see xlights.org). If you post your ideas, you'll get answers and probably more to think about. F16V3 is expandable to 48 ports, but the ports are concentrated in a small area. If your props are less than 30ft (10m) away, then you're probably fine with the F16. F48 is better for props that are spread out further, but tends to be a little more expensive because it is fully expanded and you need to buy the differential receivers though you don't have to buy all of them at once.

@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's primarily a DIY hobby and people have personal preferences on how to decorate so there isn't an all-in-one package. There are some basic hardware packages available and you can buy "sequences" from people that do that part of it well and map the effects to your setup, but there is still a lot of DIY. You really need a passion for lighting to make it work well. If you have that, the rest is learnable (the community is supportive and willing to help get you though it all) and quite a lot of fun. There is a lot to learn your first year (there are a ton of resources to get you started), but once you get past that first setup, it becomes easier the second year and you eventually get into a rhythm year over year. So what do you want to do?

Around the 6 min mark you mentioned the sum of the pixels cannot exceed what you would have in a classic differential receiver. Can you explain this in more depth? For example, if using a F48 it sounds like it’s possible to have 144 channels (12 differential controller x 12 (4x3) smart receiver but can not exceed a certain pixel count. What would be the max on each channel? Hope that makes sense.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 жыл бұрын
On the F48, 1,024 pixels are split in groups of three. So the top left port, the left middle port and the left bottom port split 1,024 pixels. There is a slider on the string ports page that allocates the split. 341+341+342 would be the "even" split, but you could allocate 300 to one, 600 to another then 1024-900=124 to the last one. If you set 300 for the first, that allocates 300 pixels to each pixel port on a differential receiver (4 ports per receiver for a total of 1200 pixels on one DR). With chaining, you can split that 300 among the chained DRs but the sum can't exceed that allocation. So you couldn't use 200+200+200 for that chain for example because you only have 300 to work with. I'm planning to do a video... 🤣

Not sure if this went through or not. The F48 is just an E1.31 controller as far as Vixen is concerned so it should work. You will have to manually configure the controller unless Vixen has added a controller programming feature I'm not aware of.
