Smart ForTwo 451 Oil Pan Replacement (2008-2015)

In this video I go over the steps required to remove and replace the oil pan on a north american Smart ForTwo 451 (2008-2015). Unfortunately my process involved MANY extra steps due to the fact that the bolts holding the coolant lines to the oil pan were rusted so badly they were impossible to remove from under the car. The video will give you a good feel for where the oil pan is located, what needs to be removed, and how to most effectively get the job done. It's fairly common for people to over-tighten the drain plug bolt and strip the threads out of the pan or crack the pan itself, both situations requiring replacement of the pan.

When I first got my used SC, i changed the oil, and low and behold, the threads came out of the pan as well. I've gotten lucky so far as the drain plug catching, but I think a change of an oilpan is in the future. ty for vid.

If you don’t have to deal with the corrosion I had, it will be a much easier job.

Yes I would like to see more smart car videos please thank you for that video I have to say mechanic of 25 years here little bit of a pain in the butt to do that oil pan but thank you for putting it on video

Honestly I would bet any of the cars in other parts of the world would be a job of an hour max. If it hadn't been for the 2 bolts that were rusted up like crazy, would have been quick. More videos coming!

I’ve got a 450 cabrio I could work on but I’m not sure how similar the roof mechanism is to the 451. Might have to find a 451 cabrio to work on!

I just finished doing mine today luckily I didn’t Have to take half the engine apart as I had a few tools around me to get to the coolant 10m bolt but it did take a few hours to figure out How to get it out but I completed the job in 7 hours 🤦‍♂️

Wow, what a hassle! I was hoping to be able to do this myself but I don't feel confident taking that many things apart and being able to put them back together right. 🥴

If you’re able to get the bolts out that are holding that one bracket, so like if they aren’t too corroded like mine, the job would actually not be that bad. Mine was just a real pain because of those few corroded bolts.

I start hating this car, for some reason the oil plug start leaking comes to find out the oil pan thread stripped. came across your video THANK YOU SOO MUCH..... tho lot of work to replace the pan so I decided to go with M23x1.5 thread tap but couldn't find M23x1.5 plug . not sure how I can fix it without replacing the pan,, too much work & tools that I have to pay & sadly can't drive the car to a shop & most shop here need to see the car & can't risk tow it back & forth between shops... any suggestion? where I can find M23x1.5 plug :( ?

You can plug the pan with an expanding rubber plug to seal it up so you can get it to a mechanic.

Took me forever but I took the oil pan out. I doubt I'd put back the bolts that hold those hoses , they pretty much tight & not lose to move around. What did you use for remove & clean the old sealant? & How did you hold the pan when you put it in while putting the bolts in? Also do you know where to get the bolts for the oil pan? Or their size? I prefer replacing them all rusty and some are stripped a little bit.

Glad to hear you got it out. I cleaned the mating surface with a 3M ROLOC pad and then wiped it clean with acetone. I just held it in place by hand until I had a couple bolts finger tight around the edge. I think I reused all the original bolts, but I’m sure an automotive fastener store will be able to source replacements. You want to stay away from hardware store stuff because the corrosion resistance won’t be there.

Isit important for the bolt for the coolant Lines to go back on ?

I did mine back up because I didn’t want the coolant lines rattling around and springing a leak. Might be ok without the bolt, might not, I don’t really know.

Off subject, Has anyone done a vid on replacing the roof sun shade strings and springs? Mine broke and lost the springs. How long is the string and where can I get replacement springs?

Good question. I’d think the easiest would be to replace the whole sunshade assembly together. It’s only a few bolts to remove.

Yes the oil pump is on the bottom of the motor but it’s not connected to the pan.

Unfortunately this is NOT the correct way. The job pays 1.5 hours flat rate. This person is not a mechanic. Beware of following his advice.

If the bolt wasn’t seized it would have easily been accomplished in like 45min. All the extra work was from the one bolt being corroded and unserviceable, requiring the engine lowering for access to get the bolt off. I’d love to know what the correct way is though if you have any productive tips.
