Smart ForTwo 450 - New Exhaust / Catalytic Converter Fitted - Full How To
Legends! Remember that time when my Smart ForTwo 450 went bang? I do ... thankfully Dad was on hand to rebuild the entire engine. But we didn't touch the exhaust due to the escalating costs of the project
The series is on the Channel ... But if you fancy more smart car woes ... here it is.
After a recent video trying to diagnose gearbox faults ... Dad noticed massive cracks in the exhaust and it had finally given up the ghost meaning a new one had to be bought. Sadly genuine ones are no longer available from Smart and so I had to buy an aftermarket pattern part. £120 later and were back on the road and sounding less like a tractor!
This video is the full process in a handy 30 minute video.
00:00 - Introduction
02:17 - How Broken Is It?
03:07 - Bumper Removal
16:31 - New Exhaust
26:09 - Exhaust Testing

Well done Jon and Pete another great job done and you both have virtually rebuilt that by the looks of it! It seems far easier to repair than the 451 and easier to take apart have a lovely bank holiday weekend all of you Daniel

Just replaced my smart 450 cabrio exhaust. Took less than 2 hours and 80 euro exhaust on eBay. Car didn’t run for a year and was abandoned. He gave it to me for free. Alternator was stuck from rust, battery dead, steering u joint was seized, oil leak, old gas, old oil, and scorched connects for headlight swutch connects. Less than 300 to get it going and fixed!

This exhaust was not worse the work, I had a brabus 120hp. Plus turbo valve which has a reasonable sound and performance

You and @hubnutvids are influencers as I previously was meh about a Smart for two now interest is well interested. Wife says no but 26 yo daughter who has finally decided to learn to drive thinks I should - she may have an ulterior motive lol

Take the exhaust off before attacking the lambda in future - visible stress into the turbo manifold and the studs/ nuts on the manifold don’t take kindly to it.. harder to do off the car, but saves on problems down the line. Less of an issue with the 698cc larger studs and nuts, but I’d still be careful.

If you can break the manifold studs via a spanner on the oxygen sensor then you must have arms like the hulk.

@@ferrumignis the earlier ones (599cc) in particular are incredibly fragile - you can damage the block threads. I unfortunately speak from past experience and I’d not challenge Jon’s dad to an arm wrestle back then!

The reason that the engine and previous exhaust and Cat failed so spectacularly was because the car was only sparking on two cylinders, a load of unburned fuel went into the exhaust and ignited, and to top it off some “Absolute Bellend” stubbornly kept driving it another hundred miles until everything failed catastrophically ! 😂

Agh, sorry, I know about those exhausts, they are utterly sh*t. It'll last about a week longer than the warranty and cause you to hate motorways. Ear plugs recommended. The best replacement exhausts are a good used one, but they're now difficult to come by.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis Ай бұрын
I agree the quality of these after-market exhausts isn't a patch on the original Smart part, but his old one seems to have lasted pretty well and I have a similar one on my 450 that's now around 5 years old (and looking pretty crusty). It's a shame there isn't enough space for a Roadster exhaust, they are stainless and last very well.

Well I know what I'm getting myself into as it's a like for like replacement 🙂 I agree it's a bit loud in comparison to an OEM but as stated ... If I could have got one ... I would have done. I'll just have to turn the radio up a bit more 😂👍
