Hey Shane, I definitely use light color notifications for many different things. One that I've found to be helpful is for at home medication reminders. I utilize a scene that turns on all of my light strips to blue for 20 seconds along with a custom announcement that it's time to take my (morning/noon/evening/bedtime) medications. After the 20 sec notification, they return to their previous state. 💊⏰

Hey - I'm VERY new to this but status lights are my primary use case for getting into home automation (for the beginning at least!). How are you returning the lights to their previous state before the new notification hits? (e.g., what app/control/shortcut do you use?)

@@fredsomers4389I actually use Home Assistant for this automation. I created multiple custom scenes for status light settings (lighting device, specific color, specific brightness). I call on the notification scene to change the lights, then call on another scene to return them to previous state. This is coupled with a time condition. Basic Example: Evening Medication Notification- If time equals 8:00 PM, turn on medication notification scene on bedroom TV backlight, play custom TTS notification (says "time for evening medications") on the bedroom speaker group, delay 20 seconds, then turn on evening TV backlight scene (to restore to previous state). Hope that helps. It's difficult to explain in detail here but hopefully, you'll get the idea. My automations are actually more advanced than the above example as I also determine whether or not the TV is on or off. If it's on, the automation, will pause the TV while the notification occurs. Once I hit play (after taking my medications) the TV will then resume playing and the task is marked as completed. Also, if the TV is off, the notification lighting source will be different. The automation only runs if my geolocation indicates that I'm home. If not, I get a persistent notification on my phone until I mark it as completed. Whatever you can imagine, you can make it happen!

Currently change the color of my main entrance Philips Hue bulb to represent the status of my security system. Green=disarmed/off, yellow=armed/stay, orange=armed/sleep, red=armed/away, flashing red=alarm. If someone walks into the entrance area, the light changes to white & brightens, going back to security color when they walk away. At some point, I plan on building custom RGB LED eyes for an Ironman mask & moving this functionality to the mask that will hang on the wall next to the entrance door. But for now, it's a great way to get multi-functionality out of a single light. I use HomeSeer automation software for such interactions, not HomeKit.

I set up similar status light with a new Aqara M1S Gen 2 today using the short example you gave for your gates, Shane. I have four door locks (Level Bolts) and an Aqara door sensor on the garage door. If any of them is unlocked or open, the light shows red. It's in an outlet right outside the bedroom door, so I'll see it when I go to bed. One day last week I discovered I had left the side door of the garage unlocked all night. Don't want that to happen again. Thanks for this idea and for the how-to bit with HK and Eve. Works like a charm.

I have 2 M1S hubs, a light strip under the entertainment center and this Third Reality night light that serve as status lights around my house. The third reality also serves as a motion activated night light while the house is in “night mode” I have three notification statuses in my house: 1. In a meeting - Red 2. Garage open - Pink 3. Basement humidity too high - blue. All these notification actions are nested inside of each other using the Shortcuts app so the status that is highest in the list takes priority. If for example the in meeting status is active and the garage door opens all lights stay red. If I clear the meeting status while the garage door is open the lights will change from red to pink.

Love this. I currently do this with a Meross MSL420 (HK native) in my family room and visible in the kitchen, and a Meross light strip (tuya+homebridge) in the master bedroom under the TV. If any of the doors are unlocked, garage doors are open (Meross MSG200HK), or windows open (Aqara Zigbee contact sensors + M2 hub) - the status lights are red. I originally created a boatload of automations in Home to trigger scenes (locked/unlocked). I now use Controller to do the "IF" trigger condition, then check all are secure before triggering the locked scene. Unlocked is easier. I can see replacing that MSL420 with one of these guys, or adding another status light in another location. I also created a "gonna rain" automation but disabled that because I want security to take precedent. I know enough now to add that into the status light scenes and will probably do that once I clean up the extra automations I originally created before using Controller.

That allows for conditions but unfortunately still only allows for a single trigger per automation.

Don't think you can get an estimate in percentage like you can with precipitation, but you might be able to get weather "conditions" and if snow is in the forecast, change the light. I have not tested it.

So I have the previous model which connected over Zigbee. While it is a decent device, I have noticed one major issue I wish I could change, and that is the cooldown. Whenever you use the device for automations in your smart home, it disables the local routine for 12 hours. So if I used it for a notification, I can not use it as a night light for 12 hours. Kind of unfortunate really. Is it the same for the Matter version?

I set my alarm in home to automatically turn off when I arrive and set when I leave, except just sitting on the couch it will randomly think I’ve left and set off the alarm. Any advice? Nothing I’ve googled had any effect

I use the m1s hub and turn it red and my office red when abode is armed. My office has doors with windows so you can sense it from almost anywhere on the main floor. I also have a status light for my office that turns red when the door shuts and green when it’s open and turns off completely when I get off work for the day.

We try to keep our master bedroom door closed so the puppy and cats don't get in there (i'm allergic to cats ad the puppy chews everything). so I use the Aqara M1S to turn red when our bedroom door is open and turn off when it's closed. I also use a similar automation for my office door. The hub is placed in our main hallway and can be seen really well from the living room and kitchen

Hi Shane. What is that HomeKit lock you have on your door to your studio? Also thanks for the eve notification tip. I literally need to set that up for the sliding doors in my house. I’ve had that scenario where the events cancel out the light and a door is still open.

I use my Onelink smoke detector/Alarma/speaker as nightlight with a low red light when we walk down the hall or go to the bathroom, so we can see where we are going half asleep . I use Philip hue sensors to set of the automations from 11pm-5am.

It's working well for me so far. Yes you can typically get motion notifications from your smart home platform if you want them.

Currently I have all my lights (nanoleaf lines, philips hue lights, nanoleaf strips, aqara hub, ect) turn red if my smoke detectors go off and turn blue if a water leak sensor detects a leak. I will be expanding my status lights in the future and also adding this device to my set up!

I find that home kit is just way too limited when it comes to automations, I use home assistance and habitat, and they let you do multiple conditions.

Homekit is actually capable of multiple conditions (among other things). It's actually the Apple Home app that is limiting. It's kind of crazy, but HomeKit is actually capable of more things than the Home app allows, which is why sometimes a 3rd party homekit app is needed.

I have an automation where all lights that can turn red to go off when there is a water leak. My whole house will turn red if there are any water leaks.
