PART 2 of 2 -- Ride and Review -- UPDATE -- The idle speed in gear and out of gear is actually 1200-1500, I did a total bonehead move and accidentally reset the tachometer/hour meter to read 2 pulses per revolution, versus 1 per Revolution when I was resetting my transmission oil maintenance interval. I can't believe I did not catch that, SORRY ABOUT THE CONFUSION! Either way, it's idling great and doesn't stall out at low RPM, that was the point. Sorry everyone!
This video shows what the SmartCarb is like to ride in the rocky/loose Colorado single track after 10 hours of riding. See how the bike starts up, idles, crawls, and rips on the pipe. The power has gone from weird high-mid range surge with the Keihin carburetor to a very nice smooth power delivery (as far as a two-stroke goes) with a nice low/mid hit that is very usable in the type of loose/rocky single track riding I do. This bike has the FMF Gnarly pipe, Turbine Core 2 and flywheel weight, so it is tuned for that type of power delivery but the top end and over-rev feels great too. I bet if you swapped the stock or Fatty pipe with a shorty silencer on there you could very easily get it tuned for a mid/top hit too for track days.
Note - In the video I said I have the clickers 3 leaner than where I got it, it's actually out 5 out now. I like being a little rich for more low end torque, but am playing with going a little leaner to increase the responsiveness. The bike runs great either way, so we are just talking about very very fine tuning for riding style.
Part 1 - Installation - • SmartCarb - SC2 - INST...
Part 2 - Ride and Review - You're watching it
Overall impression is just how great and clean the bike runs at both 5000 and 10000 feet. Just get the clickers dialed to your desired fuel/air ratio (it comes rich out of the box) and your riding style then forget it.
A+ product! Great work Technology Elevated guys!

The SmartCarb 2 (SC2) from Technology Elevated is the ultimate two stroke dirt bike carburetor for jetless fuel delivery. Similar to the Lectron, the SmartCarb uses metering rod technology and a sealed/pressurized float bowl to compensate fuel delivery for varying air densities and barometric pressures. Basically it's almost like fuel injection in practice, but a lot simpler in design. From what we can tell, the SmartCarb's proprietary venturi and sealed system make it a superior design to the Lectron, especially for single track riding. It's almost impossible to stall this bike now (GYTR flywheel weight helped too), the off idle response is incredible. It's perfect for these rocky/rooty Colorado hill climbs and technical single track. The bike's top end woke up more too (as compared to the Keihin with FMF Gnarly and JD Jetting Kit) with substantially more over-rev.

Wait, 600rpm? Mine is idling at 1400 rpm which is what the OEM setting typically is. Also, when it’s in gear the idle should be going up due to the neutral switch. I have a 2019 yz250x also along with a smart carb and I’m confused by your settings

@Dropsix Jesus, you are absolutely right! I had the Tach set to read 2 Pulses/1 Revolution which halved the idle RPM. I must have accidentally reset it last time I reset the oil change interval. I didn't really think about it until you just said that.... What a bonehead move. In reality it's idling right around 1400. Just changed the hour meter settings and tested it, spot on. Sorry man, thank you for catching that!

SourceADV so it should be idling at 1400 or so in neutral and it should be going up a decent amount while in gear due to the idle switch. That would be regular operation.

Have the same bike and love it. I also ride from +/- 5k to 10k and have the stock carb jetted a little lean for the lower altitude and runs pretty well for me. What weight flywheel did you put in and which size accerbis oversize tank did you install and how did fit? Thanks

Nice! Me too, such a great bike. I have the smart carb dialed now and it’s awesome. I went with the the GYTR flywheel because it came with the bike, I think it’s plus 8 ounces. Feels great. The IMS tank is the 3.2. Fits pretty good, it puts a little more stress on the radiator shrouds and I had to use a heat gun to mold them a little bit. The twin petcocks and fuel line routing is a pain to setup but pretty easy once you have it finished. Hit me up at hello@ sourceadv.com and I’ll send you the latest pic of the fuel line routing. Cheers!

No problems once I got it leaned out enough it comes pretty rich from SC which is smart. I have heard of people who’s left the gas on and flooded the engine but I never had any issues. I noticed at the end of Part 1, you had the stock reeds and spacer installed and then in the begining of this video you had v-force reeds installed without the OEM spacer. SmartCarb recommends leaving the spacer in however they say if you are running a larger rear spring which it appears you have you can consider removal of it. Did you notice any difference, some people state leaving the spacer off removes some of the low end torque. What are you thoughts?
@SourceADV
@SourceADV 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I put the spacer back on, it’s a very tiny difference. I am running a larger spring too. I like the more torquey feeling, but it’s not night in day, it’s a couple degrees.

I'm trying to enduro convert my 2007 YZ250, does this help tame the hit from the stock carb? I mainly ride in Texas but I'm not chasing huge elevation changes but more so fuel economy to reliably get 50 miles out of the stock tank while racing.

@@SourceADV I am actually currently running a X CDI on it, considering swapping power valve as well but I have it "close" to a 250X vs. the X I got to try the low end right now is... blubbery in tight single track and the mid to high still has a significant hit. I was told the SC2 has a more broad or linear range than the stock. Was it a significant change on your X?

@SourceADV
@SourceADV 3 жыл бұрын
She already has the GYTR flywheel on it in this video, which I absolutely love! Still snappy but will chug like a tractor when you need it. The SmartCarb guys told me with an RK Tech/Apex head they found the bike a little harder to tune and get into the sweet spot. Are you already running the APEX head? If you end up getting the smart carb and running the head I'd love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!
@glenngertz9429
@glenngertz9429 3 жыл бұрын
Much performance and efficiency is yet to be seen by fixing the loose squish clearance on the stock OEM cylinder head. You can have your stock head machined or purchase a new aftermarket head that is suited for your elevation, fuel preference and riding style ( Enduro vs MX etc. ) I use Apex Technical Innovations head. Great company and affordable too. Best money you can spend on your bike. Mine is a 2019 yz250x

@@SourceADV Sorry man , I can't agree with their advice. Not trying to be negative but anyone that says stay with a stock yz250x head does not know the bike . That's bad advice
@SourceADV
@SourceADV 3 жыл бұрын
The exact word from the smart carb team was that the apex or RK tech heads make the metering rod carbs harder to tune and more “finicky”. If you search around on the forums a lot of folks will back that up with their stories. Before I put the Smart Carb on the YZ there was a very noticeable midrange lull that was exacerbated by large elevation changes. I was running a JD Jetting kit in the Stock carb. After going to the smart carb there was a major change in the powerband characteristics. From full chugging to amazing over rev, the bike just ran exponentially better at all rpm ranges and with 7000ft elevation changes.

The TPI is $10000. The YZ250x with smart carb is $8350. The suspension and simplicity of the YZ are very appealing to me too. The thing is you can find the YZ’s way cheaper used too, I got this bike with 1 hour on it for $5500 with half the extras that are on it. My total build cost on the bike including fully tuned suspension from Full Factory Offroad is $8600. On the KTM with the same mods I’d be around $13k. The KTMs are awesome bikes though I’m not trying to knock them, I just happened to find an amazing deal on this 250X and ran with it. And now it’s my favorite bike of all time, so I’m glad I did! Several reasons for us.....updated design from the 70's Lectron, cleaner install, choke on correct side, adjustable without removing from bike, stock throttle cable, maybe more. Not sure why you would not get newer and better design unless you really cant afford it. I would rather save up a little more money and get this than have to deal with any other carb.
