Making a dirt bike street legal can be a challenge, but its even more challenging when it's a bike that has no headlight, battery or charging system like this cross country race bike, the Yamaha YZ 250X.
Part 1 (This Video) explains the scenario when you are using a Tusk or Baja Designs dual sport kit and also talks all about how to adding a rewound stator, a battery and a voltage regulator/rectifier. After you have the charging system taken care of, you have to get power to the dual sport kit to make the taillight, brake light, turn signals, handlebar switch, and horn work. For many applications you will also need to re-route and/or get a custom front brake line made to clear the headlight. You will also need a rear reflector and DOT approved tires.
Part 2 ( • Street Legal Yamaha YZ... ) will be about creating a minimalist system that has just head/tail/brake light and a horn with a lightweight lithium ion battery and a custom wiring harness.
Whether its a 250cc two-stroke race bike like this 2019 Yamaha YZ 250 X, or four stroke MX bike like a CRF, KX, YZ250/450F that doesn't have a light or strong enough charging system, for most bikes you can still get all of the functionality you need get a road-worthy inspection from your local PD or highway patrol after you have addressed the charging system and a battery. From there just get power to your lighting, wire a brake light switch, get some DOT tires and make sure your front brake line still works. Oh, and put on a little stupid mirror.

Yo not hating but with all the nods you have done why didn’t you just get a KTM? Very curious why you choose Yamaha considering how much money you have spent extra on the 250x

Totally get it! I got this bike new(2hours) pre pandemic for $5300, so cost wise it was in a totally different ball park than a new KTM. All the mods totalled to about $3200 and a lot of those would I would put on a new KTM too (suspension, BRP/Scotts steering stabilizer, skid plate, etc). I have a 2020 KTM now, and at the end of the day, outside of the e Start this YZ really holds its own and was still about $5k cheaper than a comparable KTM because of how cheap I got… Long Story short… I got lucky. LOL. Hope that helps!!

Ive owned several ktm's, sold each and every one of them shortly afterward to go back to a YZ because the ktms were never as good, fun, reliable, or cheap to fix. Ill take a yz with mods over any current ktm any day of the week. After your chosen mods it may cost the same as a ktm, but i guarantee you its far better bike for your money, ive made the mistake of believing the hype 3 times now and regretted it every time, the YZ is just in a different league. (If you can ride it that is, ktms are much tamer in my experience, YZ is just explosive power and maximum fun)

Not really man. If you have it geared for single track, it tops out really short. I’m fine doing 5-10 miles on roads, but at the end of the day it’s still a cross country race bike. It is really nice to have the light and be able to not have to truck it to trails

@SourceADV
@SourceADV 3 жыл бұрын
@@peekingtom8337 It's possible, but probably at the expense of the gearing on the single track. I essentially am running +2.5 teeth in the rear (one tooth smaller in the front and one tooth smaller in the rear) which is perfect for running 2nd/3rd in most single track situations and for around town its totally fine, but get it on anything where the speed is closer to 60-65 and the bike is definitely revving pretty high.
@peekingtom8337
@peekingtom8337 3 жыл бұрын
I live in a mountainous area so 65 is breaking the speed limit most everywhere. North ga actually, so north that I'm 5 mins from nc and 20 mins from Tennessee. I think I could get by just fine at that. I'm not looking to rip the roads at all I just wanna be able to hop on the bike and go without all the hassle of loading up and what not. But I dont wanna buy another bike for that purpose. I actually am coming off a fresh plate pins and screws to my clavicle due to a race incident so at this point I'm done with racing I'm getting to old for that shit. I just want to ride and have fun

That’s a great bike!!! Depending on your skill level, the suspension might want to be worked by a good shop that can cater to both track and off road, just make sure you don’t over stiffen it for the track because it will be brutal on single track. Hey mate, great video. I am trying to rig up my yz250. How do I connect the stator to the charge the battery? run stator wires to the rectifier, then what? I don't think I can connect it to the wiring loom? so straight to the battery would cause it to charge? or am I missing something.. (most likely) thanks mate.
@SourceADV
@SourceADV Жыл бұрын
Don’t quote me on this, because it has been a while since I built this, but if I remember correctly the yellow wires go to the rectifier, then there should be a red and black that come off the rectifier that charge the battery and you can connect the battery to anything you need to power. That make sense?
@BowIsDemise
@BowIsDemise Жыл бұрын
@@SourceADV Definitely makes more sense than I thought. thank you for the clarification and thanks for your speedy reply Mark. The rectifier I bought has the red and black wires with some sort of a female connection, and same with the white (the wires on mine are white, I'm from Australia if that has any effect on the colour..) Also I should be able to find some sort of male to female connection from any electrical store to go from the rectifier to the battery? or would it be more wise to cut that off and solder some longer wire straight to the terminals? Being from Aus, I'm finding it hard to find a stator (yes I haven't actually got it yet, I just wanted to be prepared before I got in too far over my head) I see that Rickystator has a 35W stator for sale, but something tells me they don't ship to Aus. I am waiting on an email. Basically all I really need is a headlight, break lights, and a horn. I suppose I don't really need a stator, just a battery charger at home for when it dies.. I don't plan on using my headlight at all, apart from when I get pulled over for riding in the bush and getting a full bike check. tough laws here in Aus, they hunt you down on huskys for minding your own business in the bush.

@@BowIsDemise Oh wow man, im sorry but Im not an automotive electrical specialiats or anything like that and without knowing anything about the rectifier you bought I don't feel comfortable pointing you in one direction or another on that. But i do know that Tusk/Rocky Mountain ATV used to do a dual sport kit that just used a wall rechargeable battery like you are talkign about. So it can definitely work in a pinch. they don't sell the whole kit anymore because I bet they figured out there is a ton of liability in the lights turning off while riding, but they do still sell the rechargeable battery: www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/tusk-enduro-lighting-kit-replacement-lithium-battery-pack-with-charger-p Hope that helps!

Hi, does that stator actually maintain the battery? Just asking cause I installed it (regulator rectifier as well) to run a radiator fan (extreme enduro) but the fan drained the battery.
@SourceADV
@SourceADV 3 жыл бұрын
Fans are actually one of the higher draw accessories. Most bikes that have fans have 60-100W+ stators. Plus a lot of time your running fans in low rpm scenarios where the stator is producing nothing close to that 35W max output... if you have a light and a fan you are definitely out of luck. Sadly for the YZ’s 35w is as big as you can go. As a comparison the New Ktm TPI bikes have 196watt stators. Sorry man, I think you may be out of luck.

The two stroke is always a little surgy on fire roads, it’s definitely better for acceleration and deceleration. The gearing is definitely biased that way too. Comfort wise is great with the seat and bars, but yeah.. a four stroke like a 500xcfw is definitely more at home at those speeds sustained
