The Teck Smelter in Trail BC is one of the world's largest fully integrated lead and zinc smelters. Since 1896, the smelter has been a fixture in Trail. It was initially used to smelt the copper/gold ore coming out of Rossland BC.
The smelter eventually grew and changed ownership. It also expanded into other metals. Zinc and lead smelting became a major part of the plant. Sulfur, which is a by-product of the zinc and lead ores, was captured and used to aid in the refining and smelting process.
We take a guided tour of the zinc electrolytic refining facility as well as the melting plant where the furnaces are located. Lead and zinc play an important role in many industries around the world. The smelter is highly innovative and instrumental in the manufacturing of many products we use in modern society.
