Using the smick.co.uk 120cm octagonal softbox Gavin Hoey shows how by just using this one softbox and a 400Ws studio flash head, a 300Ws would do the same, for his studio lighting setup to produce some quality portraits.
Live action show shows how Gavin uses several different lighting setups and shows you just how to produce quality results in a simple to understand way.
This softbox has been upgraded to include a grid
Strobe Softbox small softbox used to illuminate the face.

Tutorials like this are great. Just like 'unboxing' and 'review' videos, these give people priceless knowledge before buying a product. There's so much stuff to buy for photography, not enough examples of using them! Thanks.

Mr. Hoey is an excellent teacher, it is almost as if a good friend is just sharing information and his experience with you! And the equipment demoed in videos is an excellent way to spark inspiration and sales too! I would like to know how much light loss there is through both diffusers. I'm thinking about using continuous lighting heads since strobes can startle little children and distress (scare the life out of...) animals.

Hi Lindsey, Gavin is using as you say a "trigger" system, that means usually a "transmitter" and a "receiver" (or as many receivers as lights you want to fire) The transmitter is attached to the hot shoe of your camera, while the receivers will be attached to the lights.. if they are studio strobes, they are that little box thats hanging from the strobe, in gavin´s light, and attached via cable from box to lamp). for use with speedlights, make sure they have a shoe. check ebay ;)

Thank you so much - your video was exactly what I was looking for - Getting ready to venture from natural light to studio lighting - I will be getting two alien bees 800w. I planned on getting 2 large softboxes....although I have heard one large umbrella and one softbox would also be great. What would you recommend?

@fotophotoivybridge Pretty sure the soft box is the flash. They usually have a constant light (as you can see) and a strobe/flash that is triggered wirelessly from the thingy on top of his camera when he takes a shot.

@gnarr I am not sure what Gavins meter is but think it only has the standard F stops and what he was saying was that f11.9 was just .1 away from the next f stop which is f16. So f16 is a full stop difference to f11 and not f19
