SMK ammo is intended to be light armor piercing. I came across some and decided to test it in this video by shooting it at some mild steel plates and comparing it to other ammo. The 5.56 rifle has a 20in barrel, and the 8mm is a Turkish M38, which means it has a longer barrel length.
If there is any information that you would like to know that is not included in this video, send an email to 8mmmauserman@gmail.com
Currently I have the following:

This old Turkish cupro-nickel jacketed ammo is BRUTAL! I was lucky to get a few bandoliers of it at the last gun show. Body armor or not, you don't want to get shot with that kind of ammo.

I fired some of the early brass cased SMK 8mm at an AR500 plate insert. The plate was rated for 5.56 and 308 but the 8mm cut clean through at 30 yards out of my k98. Even though it’s old and probably considered “outdated”, that ammo will still cut through a modern light armored vehicle.

As far as I am concerned the 8MM Mauser is the best of the full power military rifle and LMG rounds, bar none. The Americans of the 1890s had several good solid Mauser rounds to choose from and they ended up with the 30'03-30/06 rounds instead. If they had adopted the 7.92x57MM they might have followed the Germans and eventually ended up with the 7.92x33 Kurz and been ahead of the game with another version of the MP 43/STG 44. But hide-bound ignorance won out. For about 50 years I have been threatening to do a 7.92x57 MM barrel on an M1 Garand. I have a brand new MG 34 barrel; if I last long enough, I might just get to it.

Being able to say one has an Mauser in their "big boom stick" collection makes one feel good. Being able to say that I have four(4) in my collection makes me feel really good about the collecting thing. It has taken me twenty two(22) years to amass those numbers. The group consists of one Yugoslavian Model 48 bent bolt...one Yugoslavian Model 24/47 bent bolt...one Yugoslavian Model 24/47 straight bolt(all three being 8 mm). And to round off the Mauser collection is an Model 96, 30-06 rifle made in Obendorf, Germany. I wish I were like some where they have dozens of Mausers to their name/collection. But that would cheapen the ability to say "Hey I have an few in my collection", that is also me being an bit (just an bit) jealous. But I do have an small collection at least. So if you have the opportunity to pick up one, or two and still fulfill responsible obligations...DO SO! For one day they will almost certainly not be available to place in your sweaty little hands. Get to the range and throw some lead!😺😸😹😻😽😾

LoL. the Turkish 154 gr. ammo did nearly what the SMk. ammo did, but the germans (who were basically all scientists & engineers) knew exactly what they were doing to develop this round. What kind of plate steel was it? As in 12L14, 8620, A36, 1008, C1010, C1018, C1045, C1141, 1045, C1144 and so on just to name a few common Low Carbon plate, as there is a big difference in what is locally available. As a fairly knowledgeable metal fabricator and novice welder all these plate steels will react differently, Some greatly. Some not so much. Also, if they are cold rolled or hot rolled, or even pickled. Most all these low carbon common grades, and many more not mentioned, can be obtained in several variations. For instance, if it was pickled in its final process, it will have a harder surface. I usually ask for and buy A36 cold rolled non pickled mild steel plate from my local steel yard vendor, as this is probably the most common one you will run into in life's experience here in the USA, and it is reasonably priced. Another point I would like to make is if you use a SOLID homologous 1" steel plate of the exact same steel as you used, you will get different results. I know, because I have done so. Try it John and you will see what I mean. It will make a good video. I have been shooting steel plates and other metals for a good 40+ years. About 30 years ago I took some Cal. .30 USGI M2 AP bullets I had and loaded them up in 300 Win. Mag casings. Shot them out of a 24" barrel. Worked up the load to what I felt by pressure signs to be max for the particular rifle. Put two rounds at about 80 yards into a mild steel block of unknown type 7" x 7" x 1 1/2" thick. The results were interesting. One yawed and came out the side as it impacted about an 3/4" from the edge, and the other hit in the somewhat center, and the core went clean thru. The cores I never recovered. I sometimes find them close by with my metal detector if they don't penetrate and bounce back, but not that time as they went thru, and I did not have my box of old phonebooks behind the piece of steel. So yes, like you have figured out, velocity is obviously part of the equation. This is how demolition crews use chevron shaped linear charges to push a thin piece of copper foil thru a 2" thick steel I beam to cut it thru at 26,000+ FPS. Velocity is a major part of the equation.
@8mmmauserman
@8mmmauserman 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know a lot about this particular steel, and I got the thickest plates they had available. Thanks for the input!
@xjda68
@xjda68 2 жыл бұрын
@@8mmmauserman Understand. When one starts dabbling in steel, the info can be overwhelming. Just remember A36 is the most common low carbon plate steel used generally in the USA. Well I hope you can locate a 1" plate of A36 either hot or cold rolled or similar. Cold rolled is a bit harder. I would be confident to say the S.m.K. rounds you have will penetrate at 100 yards or less, especially confident if you use the Turk Mauser. As they do for me at 2,000' evaluation. Elevation will make an ever so slight difference in velocity obtained. On the stacking of plate to obtain 1" of steel plate thickness, you have to understand when you stack steel with it not being of one solid structure all the way thru, or homologous, it is almost like plywood. For an experiment, take several pieces of plywood and the same thickness of solid pine. Just use say a .22LR round. You will find you can penetrate much more of the solid pine, than you can of the plywood made out of pine. Some armour on military vehicles is stacked plates of armour rather than homologous, as they have figured out the dynamics of the separate plates cemented together or left with a slight air gap fit, have more stopping power than one solid homologous plate, depending on the makeup of the steel. One caveat, there is a few exceptions for some high carbon alloy armour steel compositions. Sometimes solid worked better in testing as the laminated or air gaped stacked plates shattered and fractured over the same composition of homologous. However, I am getting way of base here talking about armour unless you start testing AP ammo on armour plate like AR500 and such. I hope I have helped, not confused.

I remember the box was exactly like that and the rounds were date stamped 1939. The steel cases rusted and the laquer coating caused a lot of issues. SMKH is Tungsten. This stuff is just steel. The Tungsten stuff is also very VERY expensive.

The Turkish ammo is just using sheer power from the overcharged powder due too unproper storage. SmK is reminding me with APCR tank shell. I am surprised by Romanian ammo power. Btw Romanian ammo bullet design is interesting, light ball with boat tail like Russian LPS ammo

Agreed on all accounts. I was a bit surprised that the Romanian round didn’t make it through the single plate. I think it would be interesting to redo this test with paper behind the steel to see what comes out the back.
