I'm so glad you found and reacted to this ... it has always been a favorite of mine. These young men were just 'kids' at this time and went on to have considerable success. Chris Norman (lead vocals) left the group in 1986 for a solo career and is still going strong at the age of 71. He is married and has 5 or 6 kids himself. He collaborated with Suzi Quatro on a song called "Stumblin In" in 1978 which was very successful for them. Great memories!

Thanks for the memory. From Wikipedia: Smokie (originally spelt Smokey) are an English rock band from Bradford, Yorkshire. The band found success at home and abroad after teaming up with Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. They have had a number of line-up changes and were still actively touring in 2018. Their most popular hit single, "Living Next Door to Alice", peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart[2] and, in March 1977, reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as going to No. 1 on the Australian singles chart.[3] Other hit singles include "If You Think You Know How to Love Me", "Oh Carol", "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone", and "I'll Meet You at Midnight".

Nice! I've been a massive fan of Smokie since I was a little kid and they first came out. Chris Norman's fabulous raspy voice and those gorgeous harmonies. Yes, yes, yes do more - they had a tonne of hits! Don't Play Your Rock N Roll to Me, Lay Back in the Arms of Someone, It's Your Life, Babe its Up To You, I'll Meet You at Midnight, Little Lucy, Oh Carol, Etc etc. Their best years were 1975 to 1986 - the Chris Norman years.

I'm 76 so this is smack bang in my era. Another hit of theirs "I'll meet you at midnight" is worth a listen. I believe it was the title of their hit album. There are quite a few good songs on the album.

Dr. Hook had a little more raucous version of this. They added the "Alice, Alice - who the f**k is Alice" line. This was a great memory for me. A teenager in the 70's - this was one of my favorites. Thanks for reacting to it. Keep the great reactions coming.

It was modern Smokie (without Chris Norman) in the 90's with British comedian Roy Chubby Brown that re-released the raucous version "Who the fuck is Alice", not Dr Hook.

.. It was actually during a concert in the 90's after Chris Norman had left, a man from the audience who yelled out "who the f... is Alice??" and it has been there ever since.. I only know this, because Chris Norman told the story in an interview..

According to Mike Chapman, Alice is based on an ancient New Zealand song. On the one hand it shows the pain of the man who is a moron, a failure, who only now realizes that he never asked Alice out even though he had known her for 24 years. On the other side, this same Alice, who is now snootily meeting him in the stairwell, their eyes meet only very briefly, but Alice throws her head back arrogantly and struts past him to her rich snoot in the big car that he is in parked at the gate entrance. Yes, that's how they are, the women. But she is still there, the other woman, Sally, who called him and who now - also typical for the woman - confesses her love to him because she too was too cowardly to confess this love to him and so the actually sad story has a nice ending. And if they haven't died, then Sally is sitting on his balcony and tapping her shoe. Look!

.. Sally didn't work out either.. Chris Norman and Smokie actually had a song about Sally (the follow up to Alice), just before he left the band..

@@aingealtara1479 This song from Sally is not from Chris Norman. This is a Solo-Song from Alan David Silson.
