Smoothing the Ground for New Grass Seed

We are beginning the process of planting rye grass and transforming our front yard by first smoothing the ground for new grass seed. We use our Mahindra tractor and box blade to rip out the old grass and smooth the field out in preparation of rye grass seed.

I’m a total rookie, but fortunately have some solid people locally to help me out! They never let me do anything without a soil sample first….

Just interested if you watered or just relied on rain - I’m in east texas with about the same type of situation and wanting to plant Bermuda but need to rip everything out like you did. Thoughts?

I have to rely on rain which makes it tough. I have to find a time where I know rain is coming and get the seed out beforehand. But then I have to hope we have some consistent rain for the next few weeks to get it germinating and growing. It makes it tough because it costs quite a bit in seed to cover the full field and if the weather doesn't cooperate, the germination rate will be really low. I'm may do a Bermuda over-seed across the full field at the end of spring this year, but for the most part, I'll probably just let the native grass grow and keep it mowed regularly so that it looks good and doesn't get out of control.
