924 HP on a pump gas 540 is actually really impressive. Shows what a well built engine with a lightweight rod and piston and really good head flow is capable of.
@benjamins91213 жыл бұрын
It also goes to show that there is a big difference between a high performance NA engine and one meant for forced induction, considering a max effort NASCAR 6 liter engine can reach 900 unrestricted on 93. But that's what it was made for. An SMX built for NA would produce Pro Stock numbers. Especially since Steve used to do Pro Stock professionally.
@djmurria2 жыл бұрын
@@benjamins9121 I'm sure this engine could easily do at least 1100hp n/a. Most pump gas 540 bbc are in the 750 to 850 range. Add some compression and max effort cam easy extra 100hp

@@benjamins9121 NHRA Pro stock? Nah.... SMX is the wrong configuration for Pro Stock, Pro stock is very short deck, big bore, short stroke. Also SMX does not meet pro stock rules in any way.

Love it!! Steve says to disregard the top HP number because that's a fluke because of how the dyno unloaded the engine. So he derates the run. Everyone else takes any number they can fudge and adds to it. He's the real deal!! Love the water-cooled engines, multifuel capabilities, 3 stages of injectors, nice setup.

Finally more people are starting to realize that water crossing through the head gasket is a design flaw. I have been wanting a water sealed block and water sealed cylinder head since I found out coolant went from block to head, so 13.
@mpetersen63 жыл бұрын
@Wouter Kellerman If there's no coolant flow across the head/blocked interface then it is absolutely critical that there is balanced flow from the coolant pump to the seperate cooling systems. In the early 1940s Rolls Royce was having serious cooling issues with their X-24 cylinder aero engine. They were using one coolant pump to provide coolant to each cylinder block/head (these engine used a one piece block with integral cylinder head). Problems with uneven coolant distribution led to major engine problems some of them causing losses of aircraft. The primary aircraft using the Vulture was the Avro Manchester which used two Vultures. This was redesigned with a new wing as the 4 engined Lancaster.

It is not stupid. If you don't need it, regular cross flow from block to head or head to block via the deck is great. But if you are trying to cram 60 psi or more into an engine, then you need to do things differently. This is a street strip race engine, not your average grocery getter.

I enjoy looking at engines in the combinations just as much as I do the car itself that it goes in. I think ultimately when we see a vehicle especially a custom vehicle or a race car. Our first thought that pops in our head what engine is in it how big it is how powerful it is what engine combination are we looking at as far as power adders. I think looking at these billet engines is like looking at a work of art and they don't have to be billet for me to admire it. I don't know maybe this is the gearhead in me. A lot of people say that custom cars is the paint job that makes the vehicle to me what makes the vehicle is the engine when you open that hood what is in that engine bay. It's like opening a treasure chest or opening a jewelry box full of diamonds to me it's the focal point of the vehicle.

Dual plugs will cut the timing advance by 45% give or take on those big bore NA motors. Too far for the flame front to travel at low kPa. Boost makes the burn faster. Autoignition at cylinder pressure X with forced induction. As soon as one part of mixture ignites and expands, it all blows up from the increase in pressure. Super low timing advance. You have that awesome CNC rig now, can dual plug anything you want. Like the OEMs, dual plugs in the new Hemis and the Ford Hemi (6.2 Boss). Need 2 plugs to meet emissions with the plug off to the side in that shape chamber. The heart shape is the only one that will burn fast enough to run a single plug in a bore over 4 inches and still be efficient enough to meet emissions. Over 4.3 inches it would be borderline but I think it would fail without higher compression risking detonation.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
This has a lazy flame because of the low compression. Give it a cam that raises the cylinder pressure and a flat top piston, and you will probably need 34-36 degrees at most.

I would like to see an experiment with that engine, N/A Cam, and 40 Deg timing on pump gas with the right tune and injectors.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
Why do you think it will need 40 degrees? It doesn't have big domed pistons, so even with a big cam for n/a use and flat top pistons, the flame will more than likely be way too fast for a 40 degree timing. Looking at the heads and the design, if you raise the compression a bit for pump gas N/A, I doubt it will want much more than 34-35 degrees.

940 on motor with 10.5 compression!? The magic has to be those heads! You can take a 598 bbc with a badass set of brodix heads and the same 10.5 compression and still not make 940. Steve morris really figured this shit out.
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
Not really. He mentioned that those heads from a port standpoint are not that big. He spins a 540 to well over 8000, of course it will make power. Sure it has a "blower cam" and run pump fuel, but to do that, it's still one hell of a big lift high duration cam. The compression is not a big deal for that either. I think his philosophy is to get the rpm up with the smoothest cam possible and then do the rest with boost. If you went with big N/A 9 degree heads, and a super aggressive cam, even on 10.5 you'd make well over 1100 hp. The interesting part here is not that it makes 920 or what ever hp. The impressive part is that it runs as smoothly as it does while doing it.
