Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. This is why I love these live sessions, I wouldn't even have thought to explain it until it was asked by a student during the session. I was never taught this in undergrad and found it very confusion until I finally found the explanation (don't even recall where) Everyone is so focused on the WHAT. I challenge you to ask WHY!! Best of luck on your exams

You are incredible! I've always hated Organic Chemistry, this semester I'm taking "Organic II" and my teacher makes the subject much more complicated than it already is.She looked me in the face and told me not to even try when I didn't understand a question on the test, that "when you don't know, you don't know." She said she doesn't understand why some people take Chemistry in college, that many can't realize that it's not for them. I've lost count of how many bad thoughts she made me have, how many nights I thought about giving up, or how many times I cried in my bed. But in the midst of all the chaos I had your classes on KZfaq, classes on the subject I hate the most, but the teacher I love the most! Thank you for making Organic Chemistry "less worse", I hope one day to love it as you seem to. Thank you for being an incredible teacher and democratizing access to your classes. I'm sure you've saved many students like me. Love u Leah, kisses from Brazil♥️

Oh wow, your professor sounds like someone who absolutely has no business teaching. a teacher should TEACH and inspire, strive to make the complicated learnable, not crush a student's spirit. I'm honored that my videos are able to fill in where your professor is clearly lacking

Do aprotic solvents shut down E2? I feel like for 2-iodobutane with sodium hydroxide in acetone would be an E2/Sn2 major
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 8 ай бұрын
Aprotic solvents don't let bases act like bases because the solvent doesn't provide the partial positive H for it to go after. For this reason the molecule is more likely to act as a nucleophile UNLESS it's specifically a poor nucleophile but strong base. What you described would be an SN2 reaction

Either substitution or elimination production

SN1 and E1 are often in competition and so while one may be slightly greater than the other, professors expect you to show both products. When heat is added you get more elimimation
