Snake Plant Re-potting (Sansevieria Cylindrica Starfish)

My Sansevieria Cylindrica Starfish was getting so big that it was time to repot my snake plant. I divided it into two and moved them to terra cotta pots.
These are such hardy plants and fast growers too. They do well in low light and are drought tolerant. I got mine at Hirt's Gardens and I'm really happy with it.

As a newbie, the best thing I've ever invested in was a moisture meter. I checked my plant yesterday because I thought it needed watering. It's cool here now in NYC. I checked in 3 places and only 1 of the places said it was a bit moist. I'm going to hold off watering and check again in another week. I've learned to check at least 4 spots before watering if the pot is big.

You're right. I still use a moisture meter before watering, especially large pots. Thanks for watching.

I have used coffee filters to the bottom of pots and then added potting soil (or my homemade mix), and without even watering the pot (I decided to replant it again the next day using a different potting mix), literally within 24 hours that coffee filter was getting mildewy. I do not recommend using coffee filters over drainage holes. You WILL have fungal issues in your pot.

@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead 4 жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily have to. But, restraining the plant from it's natural growth pattern is not something I would do. I know many people actually unbraid it. Now the plant will have waves to the stalks that will not go away, but will grow up. Hope this helps.

First of all, I love your name! 😉 Yellowing can mean underwatering too. Have you used a moisture meter to check the soil? If it's just one leaf that continues to die, I have in the past cut that one leaf off to save the rest of the plant and the mother plant did well.

I would un-pot it and check the roots for any rot. Does the base of the plant feel firm? Is the plant and soil clear of any pests? If the roots are good then repot in a succulent soil mix and give it a good water. I have mine in a terra cotta pot not ceramic. Water again when the top 3 inches is dry. Hope this helps.

I love this plant and just got one.Im living in asia country..im not sure when to water it and how much water

Treat it just like a succulent. You want it in well draining soil and in a pot with a drainage hole. I water mine once a week in the Summer and about every 2 weeks in the Winter.

At the time of this video, this plant was about 2 years old. Now, it's 4 years old and given off 2 more pups that are huge. Hope that helps. You can always see my more recent video of my Sansevieria collection... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtGZesKX2ODbYqM.html

Hi Carmen! How are you? Great video! Thanks! I use chopsticks for new plants that do not have established root system. Great pro for Chinese takeout. You can also use them to see if the plant needs to be watered and you do not have a moisture meter. I bought a Starfish last year. It had one leaf in the center and 2 smaller ones on the sides. It has not gotten bigger, but has a small pup that is still open and not grown closed. Any suggestions? Thanks! Gerry 😎

Thanks so much for watching! I would wait till the pup gets bigger. It will have a better chance of surviving the bigger it is. Hope this helps.

I never thought to use a coffee filter. What a cool idea! Does it disintegrate over time?
@carmenwhitehead

It does disintegrate over time, but at that point the soil is compact enough that it won't fall out. Thanks for watching!

Hi Carmen! The Starfish is one of the next plants on my wish list. They are so pretty! What is the reason for putting them in dry soil instead of watering them? Disregard my water question you ended up answering toward the end. Nice video!
@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching Judy! Yeah, the no watering is to protect it from possible root rot. Since I had a fresh cut and possible broken smaller roots, those can be susceptible to root rot if watered.

During the Summer I water about 7-10 days. In the Winter I go every 2 weeks. But, always check the soil with a moisture meter or your finger. If is says moist or feels moist, wait a few more days.

Hi Carmen, if my plant is turning dark green from the bottom up, what does this mean?
@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, dark green. Yellow, I would worry about the watering. But, dark green may mean it needs a little more bright light. Not direct sun, but brighter light. I have mine on my east facing balcony, but an umbrella protects it from direct sun and it gets bright light. Hope this helps.

@@carmenwhitehead thanks for your reply. I unpotted the plant and it turns out the soil is still wet. So it must be root rot 😞 i think the dark green is the water and its made its way to the base. Do you think i should wait, or propogate before the dark green spreads?
@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead 4 жыл бұрын
@@carmenl9682 If you suspect root rot I wouldn't wait to propagate. I would try to save the plant now.

@@carmenl9682 I would not water for at least one week. Then water every 2-3 weeks. You don't want to over water them at this stage.
