No, they definitely will. Just only the offshoots/babies will fan.

Once the cutting is mature enough, it'll throw off babies, they will fan. The cutting never will. I think that's what confused you.

Wow all those babies in a tiny 4" pot?! that's amazing! Sounds like you got a great deal lol. That is really helpful to understand why there was no activity for my plant when I first got it! I never thought about what was going on in the soil. That makes me think of the ZZ plant petioles that developed what I assume are rhizomes when it developed roots in water. The leaf part completely dried up and is now crispy crunchy brown :(. I planted it into soil a couple of weeks ago and am continuing to water it. Should I keep it in there in case it is "doing its thing" in the dirt? I'm curious to pull one out, but don't want to damage any roots if it is continuing to grow in there ...eek! @@Botanibabies Yes, I definitely got lucky with this one. Was on sell for $15 (Canadian) too. What develops on zz plants are tubers and the plant grows from that. In zz plants, rhizomes travel a short distance and make a new tuber rather then a new stem. The stems grow from the tuber. Zz plants can be confusing propagators. When I did mine last October, I water propagated them until I had a tuber about the size of a pea (one month), then I would put them in soil. I did 2 leaf and one stem propagation at that time. One of the leaves died about a week after putting it in soil but I noticed that there was still a bit of something in the soil where the leaf was connected to the tuber. As long as that little piece did not rot, I kept it in light and watered it when the soil was dry all the way to the bottom of the pot. Second leaf died after 3 months. I dug a little in the soil and the tuber was about the size of the pot I had it in (2.5 inch). There was almost no soil left and no roots on the tuber. I transplanted it into a bigger pot (4 inch). The last was a stem propagation and the part cut off the original plant is still alive but the stem and leaves of it are starting to yellow. That part will likely die soon but that is expected. The leaf or stem used to propagate always dies after the tuber forms. Interesting thing is, about a week and a half ago, almost a year after planting, all three pushed out a shoot on the same day. The leaf propagation that lasted 3 months put out a stem with 4 leaves, the others each put out a stem with 2. So as long as there is a piece of the plant left in the soil, it is still alive and doing its thing. It is not uncommon for zz plants to take a year or more to start, though those who are more experienced with it them me can get them going in about 3 months. A few weeks does not sound like enough time for a tuber to have formed if you were doing a straight soil propagation but I sill would not be surprise if this plant survives anyway. If you are going straight into soil you also have the let the wound on the leaf's stem dry for a few days before planting or it may rot. I recommend the water propagation method as I have had success with it. But for now be patient and if you do decide to dig, be very careful. Despite all this, It may still be alive. The tubers are tough but the baby stems can easily be damaged, which likely won't kill the plant but may delay it popping out a shoot by a few months. Also would recommend putting it in the smallest pot you can find once it is big enough to put in soil. They are quite sensitive to root rot and you would want a pot that will dry out in a few day on its own. A big pot will remain wet too long after each watering which can cause the tuber to rot. 2.5 inch plastic or a 4 inch clay should suffice. Anything bigger I have not had success with.

@@Botanibabies happy new year! We threw some inside a vase of water a while ago and they threw back some small roots, just takes some time for the roots to come in. Haven't gotten to the stage of planting them yet, waiting for a nice structure of root before potting into soil. Also they were callised and just put them in the vase rather then cutting a fresh bottom. Wonder if I cut them if they'd propagate faster. 🤔 (well, I got myself some testing to do. 😅)

Thanks Ed!! I did not know that - woopsies. I did notice that the little pups have not grown hardly at all in the last couple of months. No wonder, they're not getting nutrients from their mama! Will be sure to keep that in mind. There are some pups still attached to other mamas around the house :)

@@Botanibabies You’re welcome!! Only time I separate pups early is if they are growing awkwardly into the parent. I did this with a Whalefin. When the pups are growing attached to Mom, extra light helps, along with a bit of fertilizer 👍🏻Happy growing!🙂🙂

@@Botanibabies thank you! I did some research and apparently they braid them when they're newly popping out of the soil when they're still flimsy. Which is interesting to think of other plants to braid as well! Haha

@@arieldenning8719 Wow that is interesting! Actually, someone asked about how to do that with scheffleras, so i have some cuttings that I sloppily braided lol... the cuttings I took are not as pliable, perhaps I should have used younger cuttings, but we'll see how that turns out :)

I definitely need to add some sand into my soil mix. I'm just so lazy when it comes to repotting my plants lol. But I know sand also helps to prevent soil compacting over time. Great tips, appreciate them!

It might be due to a lack of humidity, but I've read that some people say it is from the minerals of the water that you're using to water your plant. I don't know if I personally believe that, but you can try filtering your water first before watering your plant. For me, that is too much work. I don't seem to have that problem, but I know that I do mist my plants here and there maybe once or twice a week. That's why I'm inclined to believe that it's more a humidity thing than a water mineral thing... hope that helps!

Small pot is okay! They have shallow roots and kinda like being in the same pot for a while. Make sure to aerate the soil every now and then and fertilize in the summer 🙂.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that 😢! That’s strange how fast that happened considering it was fine 5 days ago ☹️. I suspect there was already root rot. I recommend taking some clippings in case the plant doesn’t make it. At least you can try to water propagate. Alternatively, you can wash all the dirt off of the remaining altogether and transfer into new soil. Wishing you luck!

Hi Yolanda! Those little babies you see will eventually grow as cylindrical, it just takes a really long time. Congrats on the babies though! Make sure they have well established roots before you separate them from the mama plant if you choose to harvest 🤗
