Wow I have always wondered about the relationship between the fan-shaped ones and the straight ones, and why when my straight ones grow babies the babies always grow into fan-shaped ones. I have looked everywhere and your video is the first one explained this mystery for me. Thank you!

My straight Sansevierias (dracaena?) have been straight and done nothing for 2 years until 3 months ago when they went crazy having pups. I thought it amazing that the pups were a different shape and have been watching with interest to see what they become. Now I know not only what the pups will grow into, but that the straight plants were actually individual cuttings and the reason for them not growing any bigger!!. You are the 1st person to explain this to me. Thank you!

Right?!?! I'm all over plantTube and love sansevieria, I refuse to honor the change to dracaena 😂, and have never heard someone explain it like that! It makes sense, but I never put it together. I too have a pot of cuttings that started sprouting pups of a different shape and was also intrigued as to why 😂😂😂

Here i am thinking there's something wrong with my plant babies because its not behaving like its mother, when actually their growing into its natural form! Thank you so much for explaining this! I agree about shops not explaining to anyone new to these plants! Had mine for over a year and always wondered why the babies looked different! Definitely prefer the natural look of them though! This really helped!🌱

You have beautiful and healthy senseveria cylindrica boncel plants. Only boncel type fans out, it's sometimes called senseveria cylindrica starfish. Normally, if it is just called senseveria cylindrica, they would be upright and singular.

I came here because mine was the bunch of straight ones that I picked up at Kroger a couple of years ago but over the last few months, lots of new growth was going on and I wanted to know about separation. I'm very excited about the pups now! The cuttings can go back into a pot together again but I'm really looking forward to seeing the pups grow into the plants they were meant to be!

This video is great !! I purchased a pot of cylindrical sansevieria not realizing all 10 spikes were cuttings . This was about a year ago . I took them out of the pot and broke the plant in two . I now thought I had two plants . Both pots are doing well, and one has three new pups . The second pot has a new pup too . I'm thrilled after watching your video to learn they are both growing . Thank you very much for explaining what I have and I am either doing something right , or I got lucky :) Love Sanssevieria plants .

Hmm that explains a lot. I purchased 7 cuttings in a grow pot from a nursery. The caretaker told me that they would fan out. I wasn't too sure about it but each cutting had a pup so I had nothing to lose. After that I went to a swap and was given another cutting, this one was semi circular in shape instead of cylindrical (weird) and then one that fanned out and had 3... "Arms", "leaves", "fronds" (still learning). I guess it will be interesting to see what I end up with at the end of the season.

Thank you so much. I did not know about the issue with the cuttings creating the straight leaves with no fan. The one I saw that a friend had was a lovely group of fans. I bought one shaped like a fan, but it was the only one that had at that greenhouse. I don't really like the straight sword shape. Again this was very useful, everyone dealing with this plant should watch your video.

I made the newbie mistake of misting the soil on these because I was afraid to overwater. That caused rot at the base of the plant. So I removed it from the soil, rinsed the roots clean and sprayed the rotted area with hydrogen peroxide and let it sit on paper towel on my dining room table for about 10 days lol because I ran out of time. The rotted area dried up completely. Then I repotted and she’s sending me all kinds of babies now. Very resilient plant but I keep mine in an east facing window only (morning sun). And I fertilize during the summer months with DynaGro foliage pro or DynaGro Grow formula.

@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 3 жыл бұрын
Most likely yes! They don’t fan till they get a couple years old though usually. And there is one form of cylindrical Sansevieria that grows in a more random pattern, not a fan. But if the mother is in a fan shape, the pups should naturally follow once they get a little bigger!

@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 2 жыл бұрын
The cuttings develop roots and will absolutely grow pups too! I talk about this in other videos. But a cutting doesn’t keep growing and turn into a whole plant. It stays just a rooted leaf, and then will make pups that you can grow into a full plant. Most people don’t know that and will wait for the rooted cutting to grow into a plant, make more leaves etc.

How do you get spears to grow so thick?? I have one that I've had for years, which has grown to many! I've gotten a lot of babies; some I've kept, many have given away & they're all healthy, beautiful & growing - But, the spears, some as long as 2', are always very skinny! Approx. 1/4" at best! I was wondering if I can remove a yellow stem on my starfish snake plant. It is in between the first and the third stem from bottom. I found this plant at a restaurant I was at and it was in full sun and in a none draining pot. It was completely yellow/white and some tips looked as if they were suffocating. One has fallen off from the bottom right and now this one is about to. The rest of the plant is slowly getting its green color back

I am new to you, as I was looking up how to separate off my "starfish" sansevieria, as it was labeled when sold to me. Anyways, I really should have watched your video BEFORE I decided to break off mine when it didn't have any little roots coming off of it. So, can I put it in a little water for a few days and it'll sprout some, or will this make it rot? Also, I have snapped off the ones that are at the bottom as new ones have grown out the middle. I just liked how it looked as a "starfish" and not like a fan. I hope that wasn't wrong??? Any response you could give me would greatly appreciated. I was doing this to send to my sister in law in Florida and am just bummed...
