Can I use a regular general use indoor plant soil? I've added a product called lava lite to the base of the terracotta pots, it's like little white pebbles. It's supposed to be for moisture control I have the tips of my leaves curling in. I think they got too much sunlight on the window. Apologies for the rambling comment lol
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 11 ай бұрын
It sounds like lava lite is like a perlite? If so then it should be mixed throughout the soil and not just placed at the bottom. You can use general indoor plant soil if there is enough drainage that it dries out every week or so. If your soil stays in the "wet" range for more than a week then it could cause root rot. And problems with the leaf tips is usually humidity related, which being in hot, direct sunlight indoors could dry it out too much so you're probably right there... Good luck! 😊

Thank you so much for this video. I was having the problem of the sagging leaves, when I checked, the leaf was damp and yellowish-brown. I also had it in a big pot where my hand could fit from the rim to plant. My room probably not the best place for it. Even though it has great lighting it tends to be very cool. I really want to keep it indoors, but for now I will be moving it to my balcony, hopefully it will do better out there. I have lost a couple leaves from the sagging. @thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
It most likely won't ever straighten up. If it's sagging, then it's either got root rot at some point, or it has been damaged. Unless it's just a root problem as in it doesn't have enough roots yet holding it up. Then you just need to stake it up until it's grown enough roots. 😊

@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
Yes I've seen the ads for this app as well. I would never encourage adding anything from your kitchen other than cinnamon. All this milk, banana peels, etc. can actually cause bacterial and fungal issues in your soil (because it isn't composted yet, so food scraps naturally need these bacteria to break down the nutrients for the plants). So just be careful when you see these "miracle fixes" lol! I should do a test video with all these "hacks" haha!

Can I use fertilizer which is used for crops in my indoor plants like snake plants, arrowhead plant,iron cast plants?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
The main problem with crop fertilizer is it is usually a lot stronger than indoor plant fertilizer (for several different reasons). It's sometimes also less composted (aka smells worse) than indoor fertilizers. It is possible to use it, but make sure that you do some calculations to dilute it to about a 5 or less. Most indoor fertilizers are somewhere between a strength of 1 to 3 for each of the compounds. Hope this helps!

this was the most helpful video on KZfaq on snake plants... seriously.... I had 2 of those issues but also my roots are too long so I have to use a bigger pot and eventually most of the leaves die in the soil and don't make it to the top ... it's like a survival contest out here and don't know what to do about it
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 11 ай бұрын
If the young leaves are dying in the soil it's a combination of the snake plants being buried too low in the soil (you can just remove the topsoil until your roots are just barely underground). And then you might be overwatering if your new growth is dying because it's too wet in the soil. I can't fully tell without pictures but that's what it sounds like is happening... 😊

Hi, I had mine growing in water and the leaves started to go yellow from the bottom up. 1/4 of the leaf was like this, but has since gone translucent. I have put it into dry soil to help it dry out. The roots are bright orange and there were some new ones coming through. Should I cut off the damage or leave it in soil?
@thegirlwithashovel

If the roots are coming out of the damaged leaves and aren't black, then I would say leave it. If the roots attached to these leaves are mushy or black, however, then definitely cut it off and propagate the green portion. 😊

Use a succulent and cactus mix. Something light. Are you removing the roots? Is that what you mean by cutting in a v? If this is the case and you're wanting to propagate it, I would water propagate. Much better success rates than soil propagation for snake plant leaves. 😊

I have the same type of snake plant as in your excellent video. I got it two years ago. It came in a 9.25 inch growers pot which I transplanted into a 12" clay pot w/succulent soil(Espoma). Plant has been doing great and getting new leaves until today. One of the largest leaves developed brown, wet spots and there was some yellowish discoloration as well. I removed the leaf but I saw online that brown spots that were wet indicated underwatering! I had watered this plant 8 days prior and the soil is checked before I water ever water it. Any suggestions? Thanks for the video!
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel! Sounds like overwatering issues to me. Unless I'm not understanding what you mean by "wet spots". But since you've had it for years and it's just now giving you problems, I would check out the soil. See if there is excess water at the bottom, or maybe dry pockets in the rootball. Or maybe any dying roots... I hope this gives you somewhere to start!
@BullieDad100
@BullieDad100 Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the advice! The brown spots are wet. I think the leaf is compromised at those points and plant juices are leaking out. Weird, the rest oft he plant looks great. It has since occurred to me that I have been using water from a local greenhouse. The greenhouse is built over a well and with this well water they add a very diluted fertilizer. They use this to water for their plants and allow customers to bring in containers and take this water home to use. They advertise it as safe to use every watering. I wonder if despite being diluted, the fertilizer may have been a cause?? Thanks again. You have a new subscriber in me.😊

It's hard to tell without seeing it, but is it mushy? Or crinkled? Mushy is overwatered and crinkled/wrinkled is underwatered. I would also check your water supply. Sometimes high levels of chlorine from tap water can cause leaf tips to turn yellow as well... I hope this helps! 😊

Hi Denise! There can be some natural leaf drop of older leaves in new environments especially, but it can also be a sign of stress. I would follow your gut and check out the soil. Maybe repot her in some fresh soil (cactus and succulent type soils are best for indoor snake plants). And yes, cutting off the leaf is fine. Sounds like you're on the right track. In the summer if you don't have high humidity, then keep them away from south facing windows. East or west could be fine as long as it doesn't get too hot in the afternoons. In winter you can place them in more sun because it won't be as hot. If they are a dry crispy brown, then you are either not watering them enough or they are in too much sun (or both). If it gets a dark mushy brown then it is too much water & not enough light. Hope that helps! 😊

If it's a fungal spot, the only thing you can do is spray with a fungicide. The brown spots won't go away (unless it's a rust) because the tissue is already dead, but it should stop the spread and you can trim off the parts that are affected. Make sure to disinfect your tools and keep the soil on the dry side. Hope this helps! ☺️

Can the plant get too big and tall where the leaves can't hold themselves up anymore? I have 2 snake plants, all healthy but one has one leaf that is a tall leaf now falling over. And what do you do when they do grow so tall? Can you cut them back?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 7 ай бұрын
You can cut them back but they will always have a brown ridge on the cut like a scar. Usually if it's falling over it either doesn't have enough roots to hold it up, or there could be rot at the base, or it could be stretching for more light. I'd inspect your plant and see which one of these is going on for your plant. 😊

@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie! So if you've had it for about a month and it still hasn't dried out, then the yellow leaves are from overwatering (aka the soil being wet for too long). You can change this by either repotting with a lighter soil (cactus and succulent soil and perlite), or you can increase the temperature or light so your plant will dry out faster. I wouldn't worry about a larger pot or splitting it until you get the moisture under control. 😊

I had a similar problem. If you have enough healthy roots left, repot it into a snug pot with great drainage, prop it up with a stick and let it grow. If not enough roots are left, then cut, dry, and place in water! 😊

I would like some advice if possible. I own a snake Laurentii that I’ve had for about a year, that just came out of the winter seasons since it’s now Spring here. Over the winter, my snake’s leaves became shriveled and wrinkled from I think maybe cold shock? I kept my plants in my room all winter in the corner away from my window with grow lights and warmth but my snake’s leaves still became shriveled and drooped. I watered them as recommended all winter. I’ve recently repotted them in fresh soil about a month ago, checked their roots for root rot but didn’t find any. I did remove a few roots that were a bit shriveled and kinda grayish. Overall, the roots seemed fine. I had to cut off a few leaves that were broken and drooping with brown areas. I’m giving them some indirect bright light, placing outside during the day with some shade and hoping new growth comes and my little guy recovers. I’m just worried they might die. I can only wait around and see
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
Yes it sounds like either cold damage or overwatered. The signs are very similar. Just make sure you are letting the soil lightly dry between watering. And as long as you had good roots, then you should eventually have new growth come up. So unfortunately it's just a waiting game now. Good luck! 😊

(Like in the video) The roots are not very extensive (like in the video) but does have new babies. I finally repotted her yesterday into a smaller pot. But think i can go even smaller....deeper?? I tried to bunch them together while trying to back fill the pot. How much deeper on the blades can I plant her to support its own weight? Orrrr should I prop in a vase with a bit of water? I have plant velcro around it right now. Thank you.

I wouldn't plant it deeper. I would keep it at the original height and prop it up with a stick or pole. After some time in the smaller pot it should grow it's own roots and be able to stay up on its own. 😊

I had a black small fly issue with my snake plants and I think it is gone now as I used Hydrogen Peroxide to water it and diatomaceous earth once the soil was a bit dry with a Cinnamon mix and hopefully I got rid of them as from what I saw, the flies was due to over watering and making the soil to damp. It is now summer and have been leaving them outside so the soil could dry more and watered them less. Do you have any recommendations so that doesn't happen again. Thank you in advance 😊
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Жыл бұрын
I would suggest you stick with bottom watering to help avoid another infestation. The gnats only lay their eggs in the first top inches of the soil so bottom watering keeps the top more dry while the bottom holds the most moisture. @@davida9604 yes, but the bacteria usually survive in the overly saturated environment. Root rot, for example does not come because the roots are in too much water (since most plants can grow in straight water), but it comes because the overly wet soil breeds bacteria that then causes infections. So a lot of the time if you dry up your soil quickly this should help kill the bacteria and stop the spread. Make sense? ☺️

Thanks for the tips, but I'm ready to give up on snake plants forever. I hardly ever water any of mine and look happy, but as soon as I give them even 1 drip of water - a few leaves will turn to mush and flop over. I've tried repotting and different water sources. I'm stumped.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 8 ай бұрын
Do they have enough light? The more light they are in, the more water they can take in. As long as they don't get a sunburn. Then make sure you don't let your plants dry out too much or the roots will start shriveling up. Then any water will sit in the soil because it doesn't have any roots left to soak up the water. And then make sure you have a cacti and succulent soil mix with a pot with drainage holes. Maybe even a ceramic pot if you're worried about overwatering. I hope one of those tips is the key to your success! 😊

Leaves falling in half is usually overwatering, but since you hardly water it then you were smart to repot it. I hope the new soil has better drainage. If you bought fresh soil like a miracle grow mix, then it should have a slow-release fertilizer already in it. If not, then you can use something simple like the miracle grow indoor plant food you squirt in when watering, or you can buy some slow release granules or worm castings, work it into the top few inches of soil, then every time you water it will get some more nutrients. Just fyi though, snake plants don't need a ton of nutrients so be careful to not overdo it and never use the fertilizer spikes. 😊
