We used twelve point sockets on aircraft engines. But that had to be black oxide because they were afraid of the chrome flaking off and getting in the bearings

There's nothing worse than walking out to the flight line with the 30° cold wind slapping you right in the face and then you get to the plane and find out that stupid 3/8 bolt that you need to remove is 12 point and you only brought 6 point......

Oh the joys of FOD awareness. We once had to scrap off a couple of grand of polymer seal after the information tag leant against it when it was cooling after being pressed. Despite being a non sealing face, because it left a slight discolouration it was classed as FOD damage and we had to bin it.

Here's my take. If the fastener is 6 points use a 6 point socket, if the faster is 12 points use a 12 point socket. You can easily round up a 6 point faster using a 12 point socket.

The faithful will say that since "brand x sockets fit better" it doesn't matter but anywhere rust is involved that fastener is a different size than IT should be. Use 6pt on 6pt. Give yourself a fighting chance

In Aviation there are so many different fasteners, 6 point Headed Bolts, and 12 point headed Bolts. Using the correct socket on the correct fastener is standard practice.

Boat mechanic here. My personal experience is use 6 point on hex heads and use 12 point on 12 point fasteners. I have rounded nuts and bolts using 12 point. I have also broke 12 point sockets as well. And this on boats, cars trucks. Doesn't matter. Main thing here is use the right tool for the job. And to me using a 12 point socket on a hex head is lazy. 6 point sockets just fit better and when your tool fits better it tightens/loosens a lot easier and you can put a lot more force into it. Like think about it, your not gonna take a pair of lineman pliers to take off brake caliper bolts. You can, but you shouldn't, and just cus you can don't mean you should. Good luck out there guys.

As an aircraft mechanic, everything I own is 12 point except for a single, complete set of 3/8 drive 6 point. 95% of the time I use 12 point, but things with packings and retainers can introduce a lot more torque needed and the 6 point are a precautionary measure. Regular fasteners in aviation see substantially lower torques when compared to equivalent sizes in the automotive world. Also, like you said, a 12 point will fit either one, but you’ll never get a 6 point to fit a 12 point. And we use a *lot* of 12 point fasteners.

I've got both 6 and 12 point sockets in 3/8 and 1/2. I try to use the right one on each fastener. As far as rust sockets go I put the on my impact and dip them in used motor oil, then I put on an old leather glove and hold the socket while it spins. Then I'll clean it and put it away. Works good for me.

If you live in the salt belt 6 points a must. I would recommend snap on (or something along those lines) 6pt and harbor freight 12pt if that's all you can afford. Then eventually get the 12pt if you want. That goes if your a automotive mechanic. I cant speak on heavy equipment, aircraft, big riggs that might be totally different. I noticed in a heavy equipment guys box he barely had any METRIC. Me personally I would buy the duo gp sockets, I use those more then any other socket other then my snapon mid length.

Engineer brand from Japan has a couple products for rusty sockets and tools. ZC-29 is a spray bottle that you spray it on the rust and the rust wipes off then put ZC-20 on it which is a aerosol lubricant of some sort to prevent the rust from coming back. Unless those rusty sockets are pitted badly, they are perfectly fine.

6 point most of the time here on fastners .I have some 12 point sockets,one is 12 point 12mm for Ford driveshaft bolts.Toyota has 12 point axle nuts including VW/Audi.One way to prevent the surface rust on the impact sockets is put a coat or two of Flood Penetrol.Found this out from Midwest Tool Review

Ill share a story about clean tool boxes and how hard it is to get it out once dirty. I was installing a hydraulic unit on a machine and had to have a hose modified. Granted when i pulled the hose off there was NO power to the unit, it wasn't wired yet. The overnight shift decided to get it done and fire it up. They did and my tool box got hit directly in the drawers with a 3/4" stream of 1500 psi oil. It dripped for YEARS. I pulled the drwaers out and degreased it about a half a dozen times and it had a drip of oil on the bottom the day i sold it.

I opt for 12 point on low profile (like the amazing 1/4” Snap On set with the fun dip ratchet and the excellent OEM tools 3/8” low profile set). That and specialty sockets like a 13mm for some 12 point caliper bolts and 12 point axle nut sockets, etc… Also have the nifty little 1/4” flip socket impact set that comes in a tray with the extension. I thought it was gimmicky but I grab a socket out of it often or plop the whole tray in my roll cart when I need multiple sizes. Ended up loving it. It’s all 12 point and has never slipped or rounded a bolt or screw. Mines branded Snap On but it looks identical to the Matco. No idea who OEM is… Finally, in really large sizes, like around 24mm and up, plus 3/4” drive, it just doesn’t matter. You ain’t rounding that bolt. So I’ve got a mix of 6 and 12. Everything else, 6 point.

In aircraft and other quality equipment where the bolts are top quality it doesn't matter much 12 pt will never strip anything, its on cheap cheese bolts and aluminium stuff is where 6 pt shines, and 12pt will strip everything.

I’d say it depends on what you do. I’ve only seen 12 points twice at my current job (school buses): on the drive shaft and the air compressor. I’d lean toward Hamilton recommendation and go 6 point impact in 3/8, chrome in 1/4, then 12 point chrome for whatever you’d need. I only need 12 point in 10mm and the shop has some driveline sockets for whenever someone needs to deal with that.

I grew up in Wisconsin & I have always hated using 12 point sockets because it seemed to always have a way higher chance of rounding off a head with the rust and corrosion from winter/salt. In the defense of the 12 point those, they were old school Craftsman that may have just been worn out sockets. I still personally love a nice tight fit on a 6 point wrench or socket on a 6 point fastener compared to a 12 point.

You use 6 point sockets on six point fasteners because there is more surface contact than you would have in a 12 point socket . There are more points of contact in a 12 point socket to provide equivalent torque distribution because the actual fastener heads are smaller on 12 point fasteners usually to allow fasteners to be used in difficult or limited access areas .

Here’s something to chew on if you’ve ever noticed most of your old school industrial tools are not chromed and the reason is chrome flakes off this is why if you see a video of a factory engine assembly they use black phosphate because chrome flakes and if a small piece of chrome lands on something like a camshaft that’s gonna instantly ruin your day if it’s run. I’ve worked in shop where you weren’t allowed to use chrome sockets or wrenches unless they were absolutely pristine and even then it was frowned upon

I can't believe how highly you suggested 12 point because they can be used on both fasteners. The quickest way to round off what's left of a fastener in the rust belt is to use a 12 point socket. Highly recommend 6 point for anyone working on a vehicle that gets road salt in it, or you'll want to go ahead and get extractor sockets with the 12 point. Keep in mind most box end wrenches you might have laying around are 12 point and might work for the random 12 point fastener you probably won't encounter.

I’m guessing you didn’t pay attention to what I said in the video. If you are only going to buy 1 set of chrome sockets (like he stated) then I said buy 12 point. Your impact sockets need to be 6 point (hence if you need to use an impact you can that’s why 6 point and you can use them on a ratchet if needed)
@RyanKliber
@RyanKliber 2 жыл бұрын
@@KoonTrucking I did pay attention to the video. I use 6 point impact sockets on my ratchets more than chrome sockets so I understand your point of getting the chrome in 12 point so you have both. I work at a shop in minnesota and we do not use 12 point sockets on 6 point hardware ever due to the rust. My box end wrenches are even 6 point. My point is that if I were to buy a set of 12 point snap on chrome sockets they would be both my most expensive tools and my least used. 12 point fasteners are so uncommon, and typically only a few metric sizes are used. For those reasons I'd say someone in the rust belt would be best buying their chrome sets in 6 point and supplementing that with a couple of the most popular metric 12 point sizes.

How is a 12 point box end wrench on a 6 point fasteners any different from a 12 point socket on a 6 point fastener when it comes to rounding off the fastener?

Nope in fact that’s an excellent point that most wrenches are 12 point in the box end

I really like my 12 points to be honest with ya the more I use them. I have both and use both other than 6 point chrome but they really shine when your in a tight spot and don’t have a lot of room to turn them so it’s nice having those extra points of contact

@@johnb1121 I have a few different kinds, I have Cat chrome and impact which are just rebranded snap on, and I would say my absolute favorite 12 point set is my Grey pneumatic 12 points I’ve loved the heck out of them they are just the right blend of hard and softer that’s my biggest complaint about snap on’s is they are on the softer side for the impact sockets so the 12 points tend to loose the tight tolerance but the chromes are awesome no doubt. That is the only chrome set I have on my truck other than that I would agree with clay buy impact first

For the longest time I would only buy 6 point sockets. But recently had to change spark plugs on a bmw one day and a Mini Cooper the next. Both vehicles oem plugs needed a 14mm 12 point socket. Which put me in a bind for a day as I didn’t have one and had to go find a store that had one in stock I could buy. Since then I’ve decided to invest in some 12 points now. So that I don’t have another scenario like that for some other size.

Hey clay I’ve got a question for you over the last 2 years I’ve gone back and fazed out all my cheap tools for truck brands except my 1/2 sockets those are next should I buy deep and shallow like I already have or should I get deep and semideep I really only use 1/2 on my impacts in open areas so I don’t know how useful semi’s would be
@KoonTrucking
@KoonTrucking 2 жыл бұрын
Just depends on what you are working on. Suspension you will need deeps and semi more than shallow but in tight areas shallows work better

What of the higher quality six-point chrome sockets from the tool truck like Snap-on for the everyday-wrench-turner and maybe a 12-point version from Blue-point or Tekton where the quality is still decent, but less expensive since they ain’t used as frequently. It’s just a thought.

I just bought some 12pt chrome 3/8 sockets from my local cornwell dealer today. Sae and metric. Did I need them? Besides a couple select sizes for my particular truck, no. Am I happy? Not even close. These got to be the ugliest sockets I've ever laid eyes on and for the price I could have bought the snap on ones. Only reason I bought them from the local man is because he's a hard workin man and a vet. There's a lot of competition out here in So-Cal and I'll gladly hand him my money but I just don't have the heart to tell him what I really think. The outer chrome looks like someone had bubble gum on there hands before packaging and the inner chrome looks so bad you'd swear it's unfinished cast. A couple of them look like they were used to put out a candle one too many times and they're a blackish color inside. Props to the man for taking the business of some stupid trucker but shame on cornwell for calling that a quality product. As for my duo sockets? Made in Taiwan but the best dang socket purchase I've ever made.

Yeah I haven’t seen much from Cornwell that I would say is superior to snap on especially in the finishing dept or in ratchets. When Joe left Cornwell I was actually proud so I wouldn’t have to deal with the Cornwell stuff anymore
