The R46 trains was the Subway car of the future and clearly the new R211 trains evolved from the R42/43/44/46, which were like cool & quiet spaceships compared to the R17, R22-28, R32-33... tho the horizontally corrugated stainless of the R32s were quite sleek, and the R40 slantface trains were retro-futuristic; two R40 connected-together make the best in-between open-air Subway rides, especially on the A train 🚆

@Dutch3DMaster

Some countries just have trouble with how to prioritize things. I think in a way it's already quite telling that they were able to acquire new cars (and reading some of the comments, not seeing the benefit in that because of how old some of the metro network in security systems actually is, causing delays and what not) because the US in general is so car-focused. Public transportation in a lot of US cities is considered as an afterthought, not considered something to immediately think of when designing a new area or redesigning one. That, in a way is probably the cause of what is shown in this video. And next to that: Asian countries in general tend to be much more technologically advanced than some Western countries like to portray themselves to be. We have an RFID-type payment system for public transportation and it pales in comparison to usability, speed, user-friendlyness but also implementation in general to all the similar contactless systems I have read about in Asian countries. Next to this: in The Netherlands, we also dumped such a stupid amount of money in national adoption of said system that my brother had a Ukranian friend who told about the contactless system in the Kyiv subway be amazed the country hadn't protested for weeks because of the costs involved. Their subway system allowed 3 or 4 types of payment products: cash money, tokens (something to do with family status, the friend he visited had some trouble explaining it in English), an RFID pass or your mobile phone. Especially that last part took The Netherlands another 100 million or something to implement in a very bad, haphazard way, after having spend close to 3 billion for national implementation of the first contact-less system. At the time of national implementation (2010), the system used technology from 1995 (With government shouting "this is the future!") , which had multiple universities warn government about because the chip used was NOT meant for electronic bank transfers because it was meant for shipping-tracking applications, and as a result, was not secure, and would run a serious risk of getting hacked (Which, as you can probably imagine, happened A LOT by students who tried to warn government what they decided to implement on a national level...ever since the chip has been upgraded...something they should've done from the beginning).

Older car models had seats facing different directions, which is ideal for people with motion sickness. Now it looks like they're going to be fewer seats and they're all facing sideways. Doesn't look very comfortable but hopefully these cars will run better theoretically.

@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Жыл бұрын
The "new" metro's in Amsterdam almost all have sideways seats and I'm not a fan. As for the motion sickness, I have not had it very bad (I only got to experience it after a severe corona infection gave me a malfunctioning balancing organ as a side/after effect) but the most annoying thing for me is how with braking and accelerating, you don't have a good way to stay seated upright. Especially when a driver is in a hurry or the tracks are slippery and the emergency brake is applied to stop it is a very uncomfortable type of seating position, which is why I try to always look for the spots near the doors (in The Netherlands we don't have those metal bars/racks things, but 1 bar with plexiglass or something in it). When the train accelerates or brakes, depending on driving direction, there's at least 1 type of movement I don't have to lean into. In Amsterdam the sideways seats were used with the idea that metro travel typically is shorter distance so you might not have to remain seated as much as on a train. The Amsterdam metro network is special/weird in it's own way given how the biggest part consists out of the old network in which 3 lines run on the exact same tracks and stop at the exact same stations for about 6 or 7 stops and only then branch out to different locations. Sideway seats also allow for a much bigger capacity of standing passengers, and typically causes less obstruction when walking through the car, either because of wanting to leave or wanting to look for a different seat if possible. I get the idea behind the design, but there are some things that leave a lot to be desired.
@unconventionalideas5683
@unconventionalideas5683 Жыл бұрын
It increases total capacity to have as many people standing as possible, and sideways facing seats allow that.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Жыл бұрын
@@unconventionalideas5683 Yes, I get that. But it was also adopted with the idea that travelling distance would be short and standing would not be as much of an inconvenience. That was all. The reason I brought it up (and didn't clarify this well enough) is that the new metro's were also put into service on the North-Southline (The newest addition to the network) and that the idea was that people would travel from North to South a lot, but the opposite turned out to be true, which is what causes a lot of disruption due to the immense amounts of people boarding and exiting at some of the major stations.

It's too similar to the existing R160s that are on so many lines to hype it as some "subway car of the future." It has some seats for wheelchairs, wider doors, narrower windows, green/red lights by the door, a digitized version of the old subway sign bullets, and open gangways on some models but the R160 has FINDs, automated announcements and much of the inside of the cars look like the R143/R160/R179 trains that have been in operation for about 15 years or so.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Жыл бұрын
In Amsterdam we got new metro's that have huge diffuse light strips on both sides of the doors that light up white at the automatic announcement saying on which side to board or leave the train, turn green when they can be opened, and start blinking red as if in a Star Trek bridge declaring a red alert when the doors are closing, and stay red for a while when closed and departing (it's really cool to see when you are looking along the side and all those doors are blinking red :P ). They can also show a constant red to indicate a bit more clearly that they are broken and taken out of service by locking them (they usually contain a reasonably sticker saying "DEFECTIVE" as well, but I tend to miss that the first couple of button presses :P ). Probably the best thing I like about them (and I tend not to like them because of all the sideways seats) is that they decided to modernize/approach the look of the very first type of metro car Amsterdam used (nicknamed "Herring gull" due to the chrome plating the old ones had) to basically honor that type because it had a warm place in many people's hearts. These new cars were the first with full walkways from front to back, before that we either had single-car combinations with no walkway between any of them (this was the case for the herring gull types) or 2-car sets with only an interconnection between those 2, and then having another 2-car set head-to-head connected to it (this last type being the result of a branch line of the network being meant for fast-tram service that had short platforms and did not allow for full-length metro's, which also were to wide for that line and as a result, required slightly narrower cars with retractable steps on the sides to convert to fast-tram service).

ok so there's some misinformation the R46s run on the A, C, N, R, and W lines, as well as the Rockaways Shuttle. Not the Staten Island Railway. The SIRT uses the R44s, which are older, and built in 1971, making them 50 years old. The R46s are only 46.

Very nice. However they should have stuck with and used the 54" wide doors on the R142/R142A's, and R188's instead of those 58" wide ones, since passengers will still stand and block the doorways whichever door size is used, and this will still delays service as well. The 63" extra-wide doors that were used on the experimental R110A's and guess what - the passengers still block the doorways as well when they were tested on the (2) and (5)/ lines some 25 years ago. That's the old habits of New Yorkers that will never let die. THIW's.

Get your information correct. You showed the R211T without the traditional end doors. These units will make up a smaller portion of the 211 fleet and MTA has an option to buy more if they are recieved well. The majority of the R211 cars will be of the standard end door design as will the R211S going to Staten Is to replace the R44 from the early 1970s. The R46 are on the N/W Brdway as well as the A/C 8 AV but Broadway is not getting the CBTC signal upgrade at this time with 8 AV and Queens Corridor taking priority and will suffer with the older equipment for now. I dont understand why they decided to upgrade 8 AV over doing Broadway since it runs through the heart of Manhattan's tourist spots in the Theater District, Tms Sq & Herald Sq.

Won’t be able to escape the idiots that light cigarettes on the train. Not to mention, it wasn’t that long ago when someone shot up the train. Imagine the damage he would’ve caused if these cars were in action when that happened. If it solves the whole “signal issue” I guess it’s a plus because they’ll actually be on time for a change but I can see a lotttt of flaws with this design.

@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
R46's are 75 foot long with 16 less doors than other trains. Less doors equal longer dwell times at stations. Also, the areas by the transverse seats weren't utilized as standing spaces enough on those trains. While they are nice inside non-peak hours, the shorter cars with more doors are better for peak hours.
@42luke93
@42luke93 Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 I don’t believe those transverse seats are as much of a burden as you make it seem. Because of our arm span, you can fit more people seated that way compared to if it’s all horizontal. Notice that there is almost always a middle seat on the new trains empty? That’s due to our arm span preventing that extra person to fit. MTA made a choice with 75foot cars, you can still have the same seating with the extra 2 cars. If anything this design of open gangway should be on the number IRT lines.

But I do notice some issues during rush hour with the 75 footers vs. the 60 footers. I think the R32 handled crowds best because they had offset doors and no poles by the doors. But I didn't really like them as trains. They did seat a decent amount, though.

@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Жыл бұрын
Most Western countries are catching up, while at the same time trying to come over as being "so technologically advanced". Asian countries surpass almost all of them with ease, just because in (for instance) The Netherlands we keep making the dire mistake that some systems should prioritize profit over usability and user-friendlyness. (And I'm leaving out the fact that my government is known for completely messing up any IT-project that they get involved in, causing budgets to be exceeded by stupendous amounts, and eventually having an end product as the result that is incapable of doing what it was supposed to do). We have a new payment system in The Netherlands for public transportation ever since 2010, and it required a tremendous amount of money to implement and upgrade it (we started implementing it in 2010 using technology already available in 1995, to give just one example) and it still does not what it is supposed to do, can't do what the old tickets were capable of doing, and favors profits for the transportation companies more than providing a favor for the people using it. As a result, when something goes wrong (which is not uncommon) in the form of to much money being deducted, you have to put in a lot of effort to get this money back instead of the transportation company being forthcoming towards the user. When people in my country call it user-friendly I tend to laugh at them and argue that it's anything but user-friendly by comparing it to old paper tickets.
