Amazing story. You live here, you know about these waves and you know to watch for these waves. You were caught. This is a good lesson for all in Oregon. Never turn you back to the waves always watch the waves.

I live in Tokeland on the SW Washington coast. Couple years ago a out of town family came to watch the winter storm the parents were walking back to the car when a sneaker hit them. The 2 kids were behind them. Tragically both children drowned in the surf. Never ever ever turn your back on the ocean especially during these winter storms.

We just lost another Father and his two kids, Mom made it out alive. Oregon coast is NOT for newbies. Tides close off escape routes in minutes. From sand to 6 feet deep can happen in mere seconds. This ain’t San Diego.

I don't like the term "sneaker" because it sounds kind of cute and playful, which is the opposite of what they really are.

Experienced my first and hopefully last sneaker wave last year in Northern California. I'm searching videos so I can see what exactly it was that swept me up and almost sucked me away. You said it all in your video, pockets full of sand and such a powerful suction that I worried I was about to be taken out to sea. So strong the pull on those things especially when it's sucking the sand out from under your feet as you run! Scary! I made it out with a broken knee and ankle but I didn't think I was going to. That day me and a good handful of locals and their dogs were swept and carried inland for what seemed like forever. Then the pull came. I'm so glad you made it. Your video made my heart race a bit just watching! I respected the ocean before, and can honestly say I'm fearful enough to keep a great distance now a year later. And I certainly won't be out anywhere near the water on stormy days.

I don't blame you for getting caught a little off guard by this one. This was a true sneaker they look no different than a typical low foamy shorebreaker but carry so much extra water and sediment they run an amazing distance at an amazing speed and no one suspects it because they look no different from a typical wave. Best thing for newbies is to stay away from areas with confused (opposing) seas this is the most likely area of beach front you are going to find sneakers form as the opposing currents fight each other right at the shoreline. So piers, jetties, harbour entrances, near shore reefs are all red flags to watch for note this is not an exhaustive list there are more features. So please everyone listen to what this man says and respect the ocean or it will exact its toll.

Those are not sneaker waves. You are greatly misinformed about the ocean. Waves come in sets of 4-5, then there is a lull. You were standing too close to the water during this lull. Stop with the sneaker wave nonsense.

Even when it's calm. The South African Southern Cape Coast is notorious for what we call 'Freak Waves'. Dead calm and then out of nowhere. The Scenic Coastal Drive between Kleinmond and The Strand has more than it's fair share of Memorials erected for those taken off the rocks by the sea.

Off and on, back in the '50s and 60s, I grew up in Imperial Beach, CA and spent a lot of time on the beach and in the surf. Been pounded down to the sandy bottom by strong waves. After a day of such pounding I would find the seams of my swim suit, or shirt, or pants, hard packed with sand. Often times I would have to bend my head down to let sea water empty from my sinuses. MANY years later I went to a doctor only to find out my sinuses weren't quite normal - they were smaller than usual. I'm inclined to believe there are pockets packed with sand. I'm too old now to worry about it, but I can say, I know something about what you experienced. Too bad about your expensive camera. I hope you can continue your pleasant hobby.

I want to compliment you on the editing and production of the video. A first person documentary, very professional. I am so curious, how did you get the shot of the wave engulfing you as you fell down? The othe footage, I think, was your camera still recording after it fell into the surf. But that image of you... a tripod, or a second camera person? Narrow beaches like that one do have a higher likelihood of larger more powerful sneakers like the one that got you. Thank you for putting this out for public viewing. I go to the coast regularly to shoot video and take photographs, yours is one of the most impactful short videos of a sneaker wave I've seen so far. The city of Cannon Beach website has another video showing how fast and far they can travel. It blows past the bystanders and halfway across the parking lot! Glad you spotted it in time to move inland as far as you did. I agree with you, if you had not...well I'm really glad you're still alive.

Many years ago the wife, some surfing mates and myself were crossing a knee deep stream on a west coast beach in New Zealand, when we spotted a sneaker and firmly told my wife to hurry. She didn't. We blokes just made it up the rocks on the other side and she got swept up stream losing her bag bouncing off rocks, ending up totally out of sight. It took a while to find her washed up on some rocks and she collected some permanent scars on her hands. The moral of this story though is don't let spouses take your car keys when you do battle with the sea.

You camera really got in the drink. It is not the first time I’ve seen this happen. I heard of a story when the person had this really expensive $2000.00 video camera and a sneaker wave washed out on it. I think it was at some beach in Mexico or Central America on the Pacific side.

So, you're running away from a "sneaker wave"? The sand is completely covered in water where you are running away from the beach. And a "sneaker wave " is right behind you? A wave had previously covered the sand behind where you were standing. This means several things: 1. You were too close to the water to begin with. 2. You don't know anything about how waves work. They come in sets of 4-5. 3. If you are standing in water on the sand, another wave will surely arrive soon after. Just stop with these videos. They are incorrect and giving out wrong information.

Sneaker wave as in it sneaks up on you and rushes up the shore. It can take people by surprise in how quickly it travels and how far it comes up the sandbank/rocks/whatever & it's shockingly strong. It also carries a lot of sediment. It's very easy to lose your footing and get dragged out to sea. I think sneaker wave is a perfect name because people think if you're on the shore out of the water it's safe. But the sneaker wave can even get you there! It's deceptive, sneaky and deadly!
