Sniffing OBDII Packets with an ELM327 - for Raspberry Pi/Arduino Dashboard Displays

In this video, I show you how to use an ELM327 to sniff OBDII packets on your car. This may not work for all makes and models, but this should give you a good step in the right direction provided you HAVE a good working scanner, a laptop (preferably UNIX based), AND the ELM327 & Y-Cable.
ELM327 clones are fairly cheap, some can often be missing features or have pins not wired up at all (they may only be wired for 1 protocol). The one I have seems to be one of the better clone devices. For the absolute best compatibility with this device, consider purchasing a genuine ELM327 chip and wiring to the hardware TX/RX ports on a Pi or Arduino.

Ok I got all the stuff and finally got it working. For me, using Serial 2 on a Mac, and the same USB OBD2 adapter, Serial 2 would not make the serial connection unless I connected it first, and then once it was connected, I then connected the other OBD2 adapter diagnosis module which I wanted to sniff. Anyway, got some messages, now to understand them!

I have a t1n too😂 and I want to dump the ecu to remap it. Keep doing your nice work, I can learn a lot from you, thanks

It's surprisingly tricky to find tools that will remap the T1N's ECU, especially if you have an OM647. I asked some overseas tuners and insisted these files would work, they didn't. Van was in limp mode, ran like a dog, and the high pressure fuel pump clicked for some odd reason.

Hi very nice video. I tried with laptop and in my Honda after set ATSP0 and set H1 after send ATMA show me a answer “SEARCHING…” and any data is grabbed

Yes, I built a small example program (in Python w/ PyImGui for the UI) to log any communication going both ways. Then I export to basic JSON and I can re-load it into my small test program after and dig deeper on a per packet basis

@@napoleonpaxton1410 It almost deserves its own video, since it's grown quite a bit. But here is my custom Python program I've created: github.com/suicvne/t1n_sprinter_obdii Please let me know if you have any architectural questions. I've tested this only on macOS and Linux, but given that it runs on those two platforms getting it to run on Windows should be trivial.

@@IgnoreSolutions Thanks! I am getting a runtime error . "could not find any library for SDL2 (PYSDL2_DLL_PATH: unset)". Have you encountered that before? I am using a macbook air and the ELM327 you have linked above.

@@napoleonpaxton1410 You’re probably missing SDL2. I install it via homebrew: brew install sdl2
