Honestly, so many of the people in this movie did a fantastic job. There basically weren't any weak spots at all. The mom was sort of the palest character, but I think that's how she was written rather than acted, and even she had her moments - shouting in Doyle's face to get out over and over, for instance. Heck, even Melinda, the lady who Karl went on a date with and later brought him flowers, just nailed it. As good as this was, it's amazing how many awards it didn't win. Billy Bob Thornton won an Oscar and a few more obscure awards for writing/directing/acting and Lucas Black (Frank) won some child actor awards, but that's about it. They were up against The English Patient that year and it killed in the awards circles.

It would be sad that did happens but fortunately enough it didn't. SPOILERS AHEAD! (In case you haven't see this movie yet, which might've did as this comment is old but still in case), It turned-out Karl ain't at all stupid according to people like Doyle believed he is as he is in-deed aware of Frank's feelings over the fact of Doyle moving in as he have an extreme hatred towards Doyle, much like everyone else in the movie, well maybe except for Frank's mom, and realizes that with someone that is obviously Psychopathic and extremely abusive like Doyle, either Doyle would eventually kills both Frank and his mom or Frank will ends-up killing Doyle much like how Karl did to his long-dead mother's boyfriend, who was both crazy and abusive like Doyle, and Karl who before this started to development strong feelings for Frank, becoming a bigger father figure to him, way better than that of Doyle, who doesn't even tried at all, and decide not to have either one of that to happened so he had no choice but to do what had him isolated from the rest of the world in the first place, kills Doyle. It wouldn't the right thing to do but it shows how Karl changed from just being a typical Murderer to a like an Anti-hero sure-of-speak, by saving both Frank and his mother from a real monster like Doyle.

I love the “ reality “ where you witness Doyle progressively taking control as the man of the house, downgrading and abusing the boy’s position and his friend Carl. The director let Doyle develop his character before the “Show Hand” meaning the “reality “. The mother is on her way to become another victim. The character Doyle is given enough time to be built up . Its accent, brutal character is naturally and executed beautifully. The destiny and tragedy of the family is coming as all the audience sensed it but saved by Sling Blade.

Part of what makes Doyle's character so easy to hate is that he's ultimately a coward. The only people he actually lays his hands on in this movie are those that he knows are weaker than him like Frank, Terence, and Linda. He'll threaten people that could maybe give him a fight (Vaughan, the other members of his band, especially Karl) but won't go through with it. I love how shocked he is at Karl's strength, like he knows he could snap his neck like a twig if he wanted to.
