In this video my brother Martyn and I tackle one the greatest routes up the highest peak in Wales. Snowdon via Crib Goch. It's a grade 1 scramble and perhaps one of the finest ridges in the British Isles. After reaching the summit we headed back down to Nant Gwynant via the Watkin Path.

Well done to you both for taking on Crib Goch. I’m definitely in the ‘it’s not for me’ camp! We can’t have our favourite KZfaqr taking too many risks though. Back to more sedate walks now 😆. I walked Snowdon a couple of years ago in similar weather and was blown away by the beauty of it. You can see why it’s so popular given how accessible it is too.

Really enjoyed this upload Dean - as Crib Goch is such a memorable way to climb Snowdon. 🤩 But as you said it is definitely not for the faint hearted - especially in poor weather. Great to see you had good weather, and all those stunning views - beautifully videoed as always. Sad to hear that a man died after collapsing during a mountaineering club outing in Snowdonia at the weekend. Anyway hope you managed to climb Pen y Fan, so you can add it to your list of recent walks with your brother. ATB

It's definitely not for the faint hearted, the is no room for error. I don't think people realise how dangerous it is and it's hard to turn back when you're up there. I feel for the Mountain Rescue Teams who have to extract people from tricky spots like that.

Another great video Dean. I went with an organised group , I think in 2010 , up the Pyg Track and down Watkins , Really enjoyable routes. Not too scary, though Pyg Track has bit of scramble and short narrow ridgey section and the scree slope down the Watkins Path worried a couple of the less experienced ones in the group. But it's fine for any one with reasonable fitness. Take a stick maybe. Must get back there soon . Cheers

I think it's good that you talk about the seriousness of being up on Crib Goch. I always remember the near-vertical climb up to the ridge as being a challenge in itself. Wouldn't fancy heading back down that but it would be preferable to going down the sides! I remember seeing climbers just ambling along it on two feet, while the rest of us shuffled along more cautiously. :-D Not sure if you noticed but on the sign at Pen y Pass, it advises people to wear "sensible footwear" and proper walking boots... We gave a mate some stick because, like you, he was wearing more minimalist shoes. ;-) Of course, all was fine and I am kidding. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in and around the Brecon Beacons. All the best.
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 3 жыл бұрын
That initial climb is tricky isn't it. We met the other 2 groups there as they couldn't figure out how to get up, my brother lead the way and they followed. They soon realised it wasn't for them and one of the guys even said he was afraid of heights 😯😯 what did they expect it to be like?? Absolute madness to not do your research beforehand. I used walking boots for years but have transferred to trail shoes for everything but winter walking. The grip on the Inov-8 Terra Ultra G 270s is phenomenal, much better grip than any high value walking boot I've ever owned. Thanks for watching Olly 👍😎

Fantastic Dean ... many thanks .... got mixed feelings about people .... i like sharing a ramble. The train is the 'achilles heel' and the cafe totally ruins the effect. Also, there are a ton of huge lesser known peaks in Snowdonia where you can be a little more reclusive. Magic upload,
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Paul. Totally agree that the train is the Achilles Heel. It's such a beautiful place and I'm all for people being able to enjoy the outdoors. It just puts a strain on what is already a busy Peak. So glad we managed to experience it without the crowds. I've been lucky every time I've been there over the years. I much prefer the peaks off to the south, have camped with Spectacular views of the Snowdon horseshoe and not seen another soul all day.

Another great vid, they have have done a lot of work recently on the top of the Watkin path. Up the Watkin and down the south ridge is probably the most scenic route. How do you compare the CMD to Crib Goch in terms of exposure? 👍
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching 👍 the CMD is amazing and I really enjoyed it, but it is no way near as exposed as Crib Goch. There are some tricky bits on the CMD arete but there is no room for error on the sharp sections of CG. We'd originally planned to go up Watkin and down the South ridge but was so happy we did CG as the weather was just right and it wasn't busy.
