Rick goes through a button clutch and explains how to take apart a snowmobile clutch and replace the spring without using a clutch tool. He explains spring tension and how the helix comes on and off the clutch. Roller clutches have taken over but there's still lots of people trying to resurrect older snowmobiles that have button clutches.
If you're new to our channel, we post videos about snowmobile tuning. Lots of tips and tricks for maintaining and modifying your sled and sled trailer. Mostly just DIY sled stuff for people who like to get their hands dirty or tinker in their garage.

i used to do it the exact same way. then i found that a Vise-Grip C-clamp takes care of the twisting / holding part. use two hands to spin it with the spring and key way in place, push the helix down to the buttons, then clamp it. this stops it from springing back and keeps both hands free to put the circlip in place. still use the knee to hold it together the whole time. works great. if the back of the clutch has a windage plate, then you must clamp more to the outer part of the rim, so as to not damage the plate.

one thing we used to do is marker on the helix face with new buttons, no spring but snap ring on and run it up and down at the tips of the helix like you were doing. if the buttons are rubbing 1/4 inch or whatever distance down from the tip then you machine where the snap ring goes. if they are going right to the very tip of the helix you can add a snap ring or two.

When I cleaned everything it seemed like there was once a thing coating of grease or some kind of lubricant that dried up over time, when I clean the assembly would it be wise to put a light coating of grease on the bushings the helix rides on and the shaft etc ? Well, I did and it seemed to let everything move easier and smoother so I just sent with it but kept it very light to prevent buildup. Like the videos and you have helped me sort out a few things on some older sleds. Thanks man.

Your videos are awesome! They have helped me a lot. I have an old Yamaha venture GT that I’ve owned for the last 10 years. Great machine. I’ve never done anything to the clutches. When the machine warms up I get a ton of rattling which I thought may be coming from the engine but after watching your video I think I’m going to tackle the primary clutch. I also have no high end performance any more. (Changed plugs, fuel lines and cleaned the carbs ) Question is do you have a video showing how to rebuild the clutch? Also I heard you mentioned rec supply - I’m in Saskatoon and those guys are great!

Exactly that ! A tighter spring holds CVT in a lower gear , revs higher , more power low , better back shifting , looser spring is opposite, poor back shifting , boggy , lower rpm !

Hey thanks for the vid. You speak my language. Life long dirtbiker here and enough of a mechanic to have a lot of half done projects around.... I have a pair of Yamaha 1990 ovations. One of them is haveing issues keeping speed. I am fairly certain it is the belt or clutch. Engine has good compression has always sounded great. My question is this. How do I tell if I simply have a worn belt or in need of a clutch rebuild? I have the belt and another belt and both of them don't look overly worn but produce the same effect. How to know when it's one or the other on this age of a sled?
@DIGIT9

Measure the length and the width of old belt , compare with new belt ! Also if the clutch springs have never been changed , its prob a good idea to clean clutchs and install new springs !

if you do that you will most likely need to change the primary spring and/or weights to compensate for how much less drag the secondary will now have. the sled will bog otherwise.

@@yukonjon5964 Im a perpetual tinkerer by nature. Sled has 2600 miles on it since I did the swap. Initially I did go with a softer spring and wasnt happy with where the revs were at when it "shifted". Put the T-Cat spring back in and its been GREAT ever since. Im running an aftermarket comet primary and that traditional ZRT bog is gone. Im quite happy with it. 38mm carbs, reeds, pod filters, stock exhaust, shaved heads and some polishing on the intake runners.

only reason to change from stock hole is if the spring is worn out. in some cases when the spring is so old it has gotten weaker, placing it one hole tighter can bring things back to closer to what it used to be. if the secondary is so weak it opens too much under a big load (wont backshift), it will need a new spring or a stronger spring. just changing the hole won't be enough.
