Squidge Rugby

5 жыл бұрын

About this time every year, the same question always rears it's manbun-adorned head: Are Italy actually getting any better? Squidge Rugby investigates the history and seemingly locked-in status of Italian rugby...
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , which will allow me to eat occasionally over the next two months.
You can prove you know more about rugby than me by joining the Squidge Rugby Superb Fantasy League at the link here- www.superbru.com/sixnationsfa...
You can also check out the channel's sponsor, Rugby Warfare- a rugby clothing brand that creates unique, technical and functional apparel crafted for the rugby lifestyle. And finally, even though I forgot to mention it in the video, Malawi are trying to get a national 7s team off the ground for the first time ever, and need help to get them to the African Rugby Championship. You can give them a hand at www.backabuddy.co.za/malawi-7....

Nearly as good as Stockdale's try dotted down in the extra in goal area that Eddie Jones insisted on having. I'm hoping for more interesting situations this year... followed by a first Irish grand slam double of course

@Legio XXI Rapax smarter for half an hour. They still ended up getting hammered. It was damage limitation rugby, and there's no place for it in the 6 nations
@grahamvincent2133
@grahamvincent2133 5 жыл бұрын
@Legio XXI Rapax English rugby doesn't need to apply those rules, because they go out to win every game, not to see if they can lose by fewer points. Such a defeatist attitude, proves why Italy should be kicked out of the 6 Nations. I'm fine with Italians knowing the rules more than the England team if we win 36-15, no problem. Although, England did know how to stop it because, I will reiterate, they hammered them.

Brilliant. Informative, insightful and as always funny as hell. O'Shea's really trying to make a substantive change to Italian rugby. Chances are some other coach down the line will reap the rewards. But fair dues to him.

They played well and came very close but I wouldn't agree that Italy would have deserved the win. Scotland were in serious trouble and turned to their experienced leaders, in particular Laidlaw and Barclay, to manage them over the line. That was the difference between the sides, so Scotland deserved to win.

You are more hopeful than I am on my beloved Azzurri. I just think that in the long run Italy won't be able to compete with USA and Japan. Both have more money and both have much more sports played in schools, from primary school to college. And then there's politics, which stop O'Shea from being able to implement all the improvements needed. As an example Italy still hasn't fixed the problem of players from the domestic league going to the play for Zebre during the international windows: these "permit players" don't train with Zebre during the season. And money, oh gods, the Italian Pro14 adventure is financially unsustainable.
@liamwilliams6651
@liamwilliams6651 5 жыл бұрын
xnebiax Italian clubs play in a higher standard league than the US and Japan (except the sunwolves). So they will always find it easier to develop players. Bennetton have been very successful this year and with success comes support and growth of the sport. The Azzurri are just buying their time until take their place as one of the elite international sides.

Italy is getting better. But the problem is with Italy and all the other group tier world cup sides, they improve. But so does the game of rugby. Almost every major rugby nation has better athletes and higher quality training than they did compared to 10 years ago. Once rugby reaches the point in it's professional development when athletes are as good as it will get then teams like Italy can really close the gap.

When it comes to rugby, Italy has a problem. 95% of Italians are fans and not sports lovers. As such, they only get excited when a national team wins and never if it plays well, fights bravely, gets the moral win, etc.. Scoring a late try or giving a bigger team a run for their money means absolutely nothing here. It's so non-rugby and so wrong but...it's the way it is. As long as Italy don't win games, it will always be seen as a waste of time/money and an offence to national pride. :/

@leonardimas1 yea I know that italy is great at sky, ferrari, tennis, moto GP and swimming... But thats barely talked about, I cant remember exactly the evemt but just an examole on the Tg2 in the sport section, I think it was for a skiing event that a girl won a gold medal... They talked about it for 2 minutes if not less... But the serie A having a regular week... You can bet your ass that it got that regular 3/4 of the port section time... What I mean isnt that italy is only good at soccer, it didnt even qualify for the last cup haha, but that the mind of the population is fixated on soccer... More then half of the times that someone ask me if I play sport the dont even ask me if I play sort but if I play socer for an example

@leonardimas1 italy had it good in rugby in the late 90's and early '00 heck even campese played for an Italian team, Parma, the era of domingez and troncon... With parisse bergamasco amd the others they beated a lot of tier 1 nations and became one themselves... But now it has all gone to shit... Even though the U20 is surprisingly good... Beating consistely teams like argentina wales and Ireland... But still the othe teams have you know... An actual good team unlike us who have a potentially decent youth... But yea... Italy is great in a lot of sport... But the average italian might not even know that because of soccer being everywere... Or at least thats how I see it as an Italian myself
