Children get scared in the night because of a bad dream and believe there are monsters hiding there somewhere so parents look under the bed and therefore ‘scare the monsters away’. Now it is his turn to do this for his father if he is scared. A truly beautiful song. Thankyou

He wrote this to say goodbye to his father who after donating a kidney years ago went into late stage kidney failure. They couldn't find a donor. After this song /video came out a distant cousin was tested and was a match. That his his real father sitting next to him. The transplant was a success. He is doing well.

The most honest reaction is shown by the person on the left, all in black. He doesn't talk, he watches with concentration and shows his emotions very quietly and very truthfully. Thanks man!

Monsters just refers to as kids, we were scared of monsters.under the bed, in the closet, etc. But mom or dad reassured our safety.

Only ppl who’ve had fathers not only present in their lives but actively involved with raising them, or men who have children they were there for will understand this song.

"monsters" in the context of this song refers to fear, and maybe nightmares - he is referring to a past when he was a little child, and maybe scared of "the monster under the bed", when he was going to sleep, and his father "chased the monsters away". Now as his father is dying, he wants to comfort his father and make him not afraid, like his father did to him when he was little. "It's my time to chase the monsters away". At the time when the song was written, it looked like his father didn't have long to live because of kidney failure, and not being able to find a transplant. - however, soon after the song came out, they finally found a donor that matched him, and he survived.

Chasing monsters is a way you’d speak to your Yong child who is frightened of the dark now he’s taking care by chasing the monsters away for his father it’s a reversal taking care of his dad when he passes

Its the way he says Daddy that adds such a level of purity and vulnerability to the song. It reminds you of being a kid and how your father is like a suoer hero. The same can be said about Conway Twiddeys song Thats my Job, a song i highly recommend

I am so happy his Dad found a donor and lived...it makes me smile. :) Both of them are war heroes as well, and if anyone deserves a happy life it is them. Brave warriors, hope they both live a long and happy existence. X

Both James and his dad were officers in the British Army: James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. The line; "we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was said by James to his dad as he was leaving for the Kosovo war in '99. At the end of the recording, James and the crew were all in tears. His dad snarked "I'm not dead YET"!! and had to console them all. After releasing this song, James gave all proceeds to the British charity "Help For Heroes", which aims to help veterans. What a champ!! With the context on monsters, he is basically saying that like when we're are young, children are afraid of the "monster under the bed" and now he is older and his father is dying, it is his turn to chase the monster away so that he can sleep well.

When you're a child, we maybe sometimes as a child, like monsters under the bed, the father checks under the bed for the monster, Then the father gets old, so it's the son that looks after the father.

This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........Real men do cry darlings ❤❤❤

Monsters, child wakes up after bad dream. Calls for parents because they are afraid. Dad comes in, checks the room and makes sure it’s safe. The monsters are just a dream. Means more in this song of course. It’s more a passing on of responsibilities

I think the term "Monsters" in this song has to do with the "WORRY & FEAR" a parent feels if the son is gonna be ok, able to move on with life after he passes on. James could be the only one left in his father's life...maybe mom has passed already and he's all that's left after his father is gone....so I think MONSTERS is another term for WORRY & FEAR is this song.

They took the video in one take, and all were crying when it was done. The comment of James' dad (he is the one in the video) was "What is wrong? I am not dead!" And he was lucky, they found a kidney for him from a distant relative. Someone said that it was this song that made him get tested for compatibility.
