Squidge Rugby

4 жыл бұрын

Ten years on from their last win in the Welsh capital, an eerily-familiar French side to their Grand Slam counterparts a decade ago turned up and took Cardiff for their very own. So how did France keep the title train rolling, and what can Wales take from their second loss in a row?

Honestly when you see how much all anglophone nations use their advantages to obtain favorable decisions from the referees during rugby matches, it's impossible to blame France for how they played and defended their colors.

For me this win was so impressive because they showed they can win at one of the toughest venues in rugby without their usual baguettes (and croissants, pain au raisins etc). These breakfast items are where the real strength of the team lies but for this game they had to have Welsh rarebit, welshcakes etc which has often thrown them off in the past. However, this time they flew out a day later to push back the Baguette Hangover to game day while also used meditation techniques to imagine the rarebit as a croissant. If they can continue this form in the breakfast department they'll win the grand slam no doubt

Really strange you are talking about the referring, but *no* comment about the unbelievably bias in the first half against France. 5:20 Player is on the ground and grabs ball in front of the ref. 22:40 Player knocked without the ball during an up-and-runner. 27:41 Called forward right away despite misleading camera angle. 32:05 Imaginary offside. 35:10 When in doubt. 39:40 On his feet, right through the center. Yellow card. Fixed during the second half, the ref team obviously got a debrief during the break. How can anyone familiar with rugby not notice the bias is beyond me. If one team can complain after this match, it's France. No question.

Lol the referee favored Wales so much more than France. Example: Faletau’s turnover in the first half or the French “forward pass” or Wales all being offside on many phases. This is made clear by the 14 penalties conceded by France vs 6 for Wales. Despite this and being 14 v 15 for 20 mins, France still managed to win.
@caijones156
@caijones156 4 жыл бұрын
Mate the fact that the ref didn't give a yellow (or even red) and a penalty try for that knock on is proof to the contrary. His palm was Down. Though Wales where lucky not to loose a player for lack of discipline towards the ref.

@martindebeauminy5430
@martindebeauminy5430 4 жыл бұрын
Cai Jones I agree with u on that call. But In général the ref was much more generous to Wales on many occasions. In the first half the turned a blind eye to most Welsh fouls. Also, the penalty try not being accorded is irrelevant considering the Biggar try where he clearly lost control of the ball and even after he regathered, he didn’t ground the ball. Also, the French disallowed try for forward pass was a very very 50/50 decision (interesting that the tmo didn’t look at the above angle and only shots filmed from behind the players).

Squidge : France played the ref better than Wales. Romain Ntamack : Oulah, do you repeat the question ? You are sooooo overestimating the abilities of french players to play with the rules. You have no idea how impossible it is for french players to communicate with refs at the international level... I'm french and I experience it since ever with France, the players are not able to talk to the referee about anything complex because of their poor english. Half of the time the front row are just pretending they understand what the ref is telling them when he's not happy about the scrum because there is no way they can understand a technical explanation in english given in a welsh/irish/south african accent...

Ok I'm French so not neutral here, but I really thought Wales' behavior was absolutely disgraceful before/during/after the game: first accuse the French of cheating in the press, complain to the ref constantly, start handbags at final whistle (these 2 courtesy of Dan 'Birdman' Biggar), and finally blame the ref for the defeat in a press conference. Very disappointing attitude from players and staff. I don't think I've ever seen a coach and captain speak that way, it's not just some drunken fan/keyboard warrior. I'd be ashamed honestly if Galthier/Ollivon acted like that.

5) The ball is not knocked-on, and play continues, if: a) A player knocks the ball forward immediately after an opponent has kicked it (charge down). b) A player rips or knocks the ball from an opponent and the ball goes forward from the opponent’s hand or arm. As the ball has not fully left Ken Owens hand, there is no knock on, and therefore no deliberate knock on.

@@cristobalarandakenny8256 In this situation that's good defense cause N'Tamack is on 1 to 3 disadvantage, if he engages the tackle too soon the ball goes to the wing and it's off to the line for Wales, he stays between the players to force the carrier to push his effort and allow the defense to comme back, and controls the outside pass waiting for the right moment to intercept if possible (and it was)

@@wolvie1973 yeah but on the level we mortals play you can kill the ball on the wing by letting the play develop and allow cover players to get to you. Also what he would say is that you can always show yourself in the passer's line to make the offensive player keep it. Trying to sneak your way into an intercept is gambling too much

Louis Congard everyone is jumping all over that rubbish mate and it’s not constructive rugby talk it’s just like celeb chat gossip bollocks that doesn’t matter, I don’t think biggar played badly I just think France played well. They have been due a win in Cardiff for ages! And in recent games it has been nail bitingly close.

For me that last ruck was always a penalty to France. He was in no way preventing Tompkins from releasing the ball, Chat was simply on Tompkins so quickly he never even had the opportunity to release the ball and secondly he was not placed in such a way to prevent the clear out. If he had prevented the clear out he would have been penalized and you can't say its him that prevented the release, it was clearly Chats speed over the ball. So penalty to France is the correct call, at least imo.
@isitwasit8756
@isitwasit8756 4 жыл бұрын
The player not rolling away is hindering the tackled player to present the ball cleanly hence why players who don't make at least an attempt to roll away get penalised .. on another day with a different ref France would have been penalised .. the breakdown is the most inconsistent area of refereeing in the game that seriously needs to be looked at.. it's a lottery but that game is over time to move on..
@isitwasit8756
@isitwasit8756 4 жыл бұрын
Ironically Tompkins instead of holding on to the ball and protesting to the ref should have instead immediately presented the ball onto the French players chest who didn't roll away leaving the ref no option but to penalise French player for preventing the ball to be presented cleanly ..
@callumscott953
@callumscott953 4 жыл бұрын
@@isitwasit8756 I just explained why i disagree, its Chat whos quickly onto the ball that prevents the release, Vincent plays little to no role in the breakdown and doesn't prevent the clear out. If he had prevented the clear out by his positioning, its a different story. Tompkins has rolled over onto the wrong side of the ruck making presenting the ball difficult for himself as he has to role back over or present the ball blind, that allowed Chat onto the ball who forced the turn over penalty. If you play it in real time there is no way you can say Vincent played any role in slowing the release,Tompkins could also have roled over the opposite way to allow the ball to be presented on the Welsh side but Chat was on him so quickly he never even had the chance to place the ball.

squidge if you want to do a story re rugby going behind a pay wall, i'd recommend using australia as a case study. Rugby's facing a lot of issues there, but the common problem is a lack of free-to-air coverage. interestingly also a parallel example in cricket both in australia and the uk in terms of broadcast rights

As always, IF YOUR TEAM cheats, little or big, you can have no sympathy when someone else fools an official at your expense. The 5:28 feature on how a one-off moment of class was pulled off to perfection was just as much great for neutrals to watch (SHOULD YOU HAVE ENOUGH IN YOU TO SAY "WELL DONE, SIR") as Rhys Webb's dummy for the opening try in the then-Millennium Stadium vs Australia 28-33 defeat was in 2012. Good video.

Pivac seems to be struggling to implement a wide attacking game with a team drilled by Gatland and Edwards to play a tight defensive game. France look encouraging; hopefully this Coronavirus panic won't the tournament called off, like some are predicting.

Correct me if I'm wrong: had Willemse been literally a millisecond earlier, the ball would still have been in the Welsh attacker's hands. It's legal to target the ball in a tackle and so Willemse would have just dislodged the ball in the act of tackling- right? If that's all true, it would seem harsh to judge it a deliberate knock-on when it's a millisecond away from an excellent tackle.

Or would it still be a deliberate knock-on if the defender deliberately dislodges the ball forwards while tackling?

I don't wanna hear another peep about the knock down, France were robbed of a semi final in the world cup by Wales from the strip that went forward. Then in this game they had a fair try ruled out while one of Wales tries was very 50/50 as Biggar appeared to lose the ball onto the defenders arm before he regathered it, which would be a knock on. Sure there were calls that went against Wales but there were plenty against France too, they deserve the win fairly and look the goods for a grand slam this season, in fact they look like they could have one of the best teams for the next world cup, great coaching and great development going on there. One of their best players made his debut as an 18 or 19 year old, very impressive and I look forward to seeing how they go in the coming seasons
