Squidge Rugby

With one round left to go, the Six Nations hit an unexpected finale as Scotland dismantled title favourites France at Murrayfield, putting in possibly their best performance in two years and sending France hope tae self-isolate and think again. So how did Scotland win what may just be the last-ever test match, and end France's Grand Slam dreams?

Now that there are no sports virtually anywhere, It'd be interesting if you analysed historic rugby matches, like 1995 South Africa v New Zealand RWC final, or Argentina's back to back wins against France in 2007. Just saying.

One thing that nobody seems to be mentioning is the skill, speed and awareness shown by the big ol' lump that is Grant Gilchrist in scrum halfing it for Maitland's 1st try. Had someone like Itoje or AWJ done it I suspect people would be extolling the virtues of their phenomenal skills. Just saying.

Scotland kicked behind French wingers a ton. Instead of trying to beat their heads against a rush defense. When France kicked back, Scotland had more room to run into & exploit. It was one of the most sensible & effective tactics I've seen used against a Sean Edwards aligned defense.

Funny thing, I had followed every match from France in this tournament on the computer (I live in Canada). During the week before the match, there were signs of impending doom: Camicha getting injured and the coronavirus fear coming leading to some matches gerring delayed except this one. Plus, we had the usual french supporter overhyping themselves (urr durr the Grand Chelem is ours, Scotland is gonna be a formality. This would not end well. I was on my road to the Niagara Falls (yeah I'm a tourist and it was holiday week in Québec) and I would not be able to follow the match. Another bad sign. And then, we made a stop at Niagara village, and in front of us, beyond the river, the USA with I, looking at the fort before us like Napoléon viewing England from the camp de Boulogne. The fort on the other side was Fort Niagara... The site of an english victory during the Seven Years War. Just then, Ntamack was wounded. This wasn't good. Not good at all. The rest is history.

SPOILER FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS: this guy has no clue what he is talking about. We have lost so many games in the last 10 years (at the last minute quite often...) that no French fan was confident going into this. Except maybe for one or 2 village idiots, but well you have those everywhere. Honestly I suspect 'Papazoulou' follows rugby 5 minutes a year, considering he wrote 'Camicha' for Camille Chat.....

More recommended watches during this period: Black Mirror (for a reminder of the shit we're in) and the much forgotten Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe. In fact, watching Screenwipe last night I got thinking that you, Squidge, are essentially the Screenwipe for rugby. If you're looking for content to cover right now, how about branching out and trying to cover either rugby-related news OR just news in general. We need some satire during this period. With Charlie too busy working on Black Mirror for Netflix, maybe you can fill those shoes 😆😆

I was at the game and watching back am still staggered about a Shaun Edwards defence conceding that first try. Clearly still in some disarray following the dismissal, but I have paused the game on 40:56 (on the match counter, 10:40 on your video) and in shot, just including the left hand post there is 7 Frenchmen frantically drifting and only Hastings, SJ and Maitland for Scotland. Jalibert shooting out the line costs France there cover on SJ and his delay on the pass (may well have made it if he’d dummied the pass himself) to Maitland gives him a very easy run in. Granted this is quick ball after a punishing line break from Hastings, but with those numbers in defence it’s surprising that the French concede, and so softly. In other thoughts, delighted for Hastings this six nations, been chucked in at the deep end a bit and has seemed unfazed and actually played a very tidy tournament, goal kicking against Italy aside. Depending on the Finn situation, in a year’s time he could well be in the argument to tour with the Lions, Farrell the likely starting 10 for me, but Hastings a good option at 22, more of a running game to ask different questions of the Boks defence and he’s maturing very quickly in game management and communication.

For me the biggest winning play from Scotland happened before the game. Traditionally France struggle away from home due to the lack of baguettes, croissants and other home breakfast items. However this didn't apply to Scotland as, due to the historical ties of the Auld Alliance, there's a very strong boulangerie industry in Edinburgh. Instead Scotland played them at their own game, putting out an all you can eat platter on the morning of the match while Shaun Edwards was out for his run. This is why the French players struggled ad they ate too much, and Ntamack had to come off with indigestion which really harmed their flow.
