The Outsider

Күн бұрын

...well, it's not exactly a tank, but it is a tracked vehicle. Before the Sherp was even a thing, a Canadian company (Bombardier) built the Snowcat "Bombi" back in the mid 70s. It is a true all-terrain vehicle that can go, and work where other machines would become hopelessly stuck. In this episode I give the Bombi its first test run. I also install some rafters on the log cabin.

Congrats on The Bombi it is a real deal snow trail grooming machine. I drove two of them at The World Series of Snowmobiling races in Boonville, New York 30+ years ago. They weren't fast maybe 20mph (32kph). They had a flat rear bed for a Ambulance Stretcher for injured racers and the other was a tow truck for broken sleds. I think they had Ford inline 4 cylinder about 57HP from a Cortina. About 1 ton [900kg) A real work horse. I know we always kept a box with a spare distributor cap, rotor, points, and plugs in the cab. We also kept a blanket in the cab as the heater wasn"t to good when it was below 0°F. The lights were awful, a LED upgrade is a must plus add rear facing LED's.. A winch is critical in the back woods for a stuck Bombi or down trees. I just saw a 1984 Bombi with a 1 litre Kubota diesel conversion for about $7,800 US in good running condition with a snowplow, winch & LED lights.

Then, I was watching KZfaq the other day and a recommended video popped up. As I was watching, I thought “I know that voice, it’s very familiar and relaxing”....Then I twigged, it was you! I’m so glad I’ve found your channel again. I have a KZfaq account now so I can subscribe, which is what I have done. Thank you for sharing your adventures. I find it really relaxing, soothing to watch you and your dad build the cabin. You guys work at a perfect pace. I love the look of your new truck/snow monster! What a ripper! I’m looking forward to seeing the tin go on the roof. I get nervous for you when I see it’s raining and you’re on the rafters. I get the willies. The area you are in looks so beautiful! We don’t get snow where I live (Melbourne, Australia) and it’s a real pleasure to see so much of it. Thanks again for sharing, I appreciate it and thoroughly enjoy your videos. Stay safe.😊

Great episode! The snowcat will be a real help next winter and in the mud. I had no idea their footprint was so light, that is amazing. Very nice video work peeping the roof and putting it back. The only thing my wife kept saying was “where is his safety harness?” Having climbed a fair amount in my younger years, I know how they can get in the way. Now, being older and wiser all I can tell you is, be safe our friend your wife and family need you. Our prayers are with your wife and the rest of your family. God Bless.

Watching you construct the cabin I thought of an idea for future revenue generation - down the road a bit. (You may already have thought of it.) A log cabin building day camp for people who want to experience hands on. They would pay, of course. If you have a piece of suitable property have each cabin build (smaller ones) become rentable rooms - wilderness campground. Basically, you’d be paid for people to help build the cabins and be paid for the rental of the cabins later. All the best.

Thanks Mark. I like your business model idea. To be honest though, I just don't feel that I'm at the level yet where I can properly teach others about log cabin building. I just haven't earned the right to call myself a log cabin authority just yet, as there is still so much that I want learn and perfect first. Maybe once I become an "old-timer" with decades of knowledge and experience under my belt, I'll consider writing a book and/or running a course. :) Until then, I'm more than happy to share my journey with everyone for free on KZfaq. Thanks again my friend. Keep the ideas coming, because I love hearing them!

“The Bomb”...a great name for a machine with great potential! Can’t wait to see it with a new coat of paint! Now for the cabin. I believe that if we’re possible to hammer a nail with that chainsaw, you would do so. It is wonderful watching the progression of your work, from the foundation to your present situation. The portable mill has been a great tool, maybe as important as the chainsaw. I like the fact that the cabin has been made with dead poplar, farming them and allowing the young trees to reach for the sky. The precision that you and Senior have applied will insure the cabin’s survival for a hundred years or more. I’d love to hear the stories told by great-grandchildren (or great-great...) as they sit by the wood stove, stories that tell of Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa’s life in the wilderness. As much as I enjoy these videos, I and most of your subscribers will be quite sad when the cabin is complete. Can you share with us possible plans for future ideas? Your skills as a cinematographer have made each and every episode a pleasure to watch. Thanks to you and Senior Outsider for the talent applied to the construction of this cabin. And as usual, I can’t wait for the next episode. My thoughts and prayers go to the entire Outsider family, Mrs Outsider in particular.

Reminds me of putting corrugated "zinc-alume" on my kit home. It comes with an oily coating from the factory, and even standing on a _low-angle_ sloped roof, pressing down hard to drive tek-screws into the purlins below can cause the feet to lose grip . . . I dunno how I didn't slip off that huge expanse of roof, but saved thousands of dollars by building my own house, so I guess it was worth it.

@@danieloliver20 I've discovered that it's a good idea to take some "screen shots" of your Google Earth images periodically. Its amazing how quickly things can change over the years. Already two houses that I've lived in have been demolished. One by ALCO which wanted to expand its aluminium bauxite settling ponds into a semi-rural area of bushland. The other was a typical Aussie style quarter-acre suburban house and garden that was demolished for high density housing units. Both houses were only in existence for 30 years. Gotta preserve your personal history via satellite imagery these days!

The Outsider I believe the tension was measured < 2” sag under center idle wheel, with the bombi blocked front and rear, and the track hanging freely. They really climb! Be careful going forward down steep grades....neighbor did a complete frontroll, going over an irrigation ditch on a pipeline right of way.....short track, and that ramp on the front of the track make it unforgiving going over obstacles, especially on a downslope! cheers!

Quick tip when trying to remove a tarp from something with sharp edges and don’t want to ruin it then tie a piece of rope to the edge then throw the rope over the top of the tarp and pull that way the tarp rolls over itself and doesn’t have a chance to snag anything and so you don’t have to get up high to remove it. A simple way to put a tarp up on something like that is to use a piece of pvc pipe and zip tie or just attach it to the leading edge of the tarp so that it actually lifts the leading edge up a inch or two to prevent snags and/or helps slide across rough surfaces and it pulls the tarp evenly from edge to edge even if pulling the tarp from a single point. I’m sure there are some better options or ways or opinions of others and if you do know a better easier and/or cheaper way then please reply below so others can see. Thanks and have a great day

Ah yes, the Bombi! Had one for years, the 4 cylinder ford engine was very good....I didn’t like going downhill forwards, tho. I did do a complete front roll, going over an erosion control berm on a downhill section of a pipeline right of way.....threw a track on a sidehill( because the track was a bit loose), and the steering clutches started to give me trouble. But it sure did climb, and do very well in deep snow!

Your going to love the machine. The bombi with the aluminum grousers are really good in the snow, just be careful in sand, mud and hard rocky areas. The grousers are getting harder to find. Enjoy the machine.

Man, I wish you would tie off when you are working high up. Your family - more than most - needs the man of the house in one piece. If you were single - I would say 'go for it'. But you are not single. Also, you worked with kids through your church. Is this the safety example of working that you want to set for them - that it is okay to work high up without a safety harness? Anyway - LOVE the tank and I sincerely hope your wife is feeling better. Peace.

Risk a little to save a little, risk a lot to save a lot. What engineered anchor point does he have to tie off to? Let the man be. He seems to be doing just fine so far

@@somemedic Save a lot? What the heck is he saving? He is building a log cabin that has already taken him two summers. Where is the urgency? Where is this big savings he gets for greater risk? And what anchor point? Are you serious? How about the main beam? Are you seriously saying it cannot take his weight? Let him be how? I simply asked him to? Are you saying he is so thin-skinned that he cannot handle a suggestion? He has a wife who is going through a ton medically and a young child. If he falls - then what does she do? Oh...but you don't care about that - do you? You just want him to 'be a man'....to 'take risks'...to 'save a lot'. I have raced open-wheel cars and skydived...and I am still saying that were I him, I would tie off to make sure I stayed healthy for my family.

Nice snowcat . Those are winter tracks for snow. It's hard on those cleats to run on dirt and rocks etc. You can now make a 2 sleeper tow behind cabin. We have a BR100 which is one step up from that Bombi. Bigger motor and auto transmission We groom snowmobile trails. They can pull good amount of weight so no problem with a bigger winter camping rig Thanks for the video.

The Sno-cat will be a winter game changer for you. At least compared to the Jag. While you work on it during the summer getting it ready for the snow you should seriously consider adding a winch. Perhaps one that can mount on the front or rear because if you get into a situation where you do get it stuck you’ll probably have to wait till spring to get it out. It won’t be long before the cabin will have its forever roof.
