So after the release of Metal Gear Solid 2, Kojima and the team quickly got to work on their next sequel, with the plan being that it would become a launch title for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 3. The team planned a lot of the technical aspects of the game around the power of the new hardware, but due to the fact that the new system wouldn’t release until the holiday season of 2006, the development of Metal Gear Solid 3 was moved back to the PlayStation 2, and it would ultimately release in November of 2004, a whole two years ahead of the original schedule. And while sequels in the Metal Gear series can definitely be controversial, this one would go on to become the majority of player’s favorite game in the series. And on top of that, returning viewers will know that an upcoming remake of this game is the entire reason I started this series in the first place, so there’s a little bit of excitement going in for me too. So is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater really the best game in the Metal Gear franchise so far, or does it fall short of what came before it? Well, let’s talk about it.
Full Metal Gear Series: • A First Timer's Journe...
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a 2004 action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation 2. It was released in late 2004 in North America and Japan, and in early 2005 in Europe and Australia. It was the fifth Metal Gear game written and directed by Hideo Kojima and serves as a prequel to the entire Metal Gear series. An expanded edition, titled Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, was released in Japan in late 2005, then in North America, Europe and Australia in 2006. A remastered version of the game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - HD Edition, was later included in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita, while a reworked version, titled Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. The HD Edition of the game was included on the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 compilation for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on October 24, 2023. The same year, Konami announced a remake, entitled Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

Hey y'all, just wanna throw this here because a lot of people are getting the wrong idea with this one. A lot of people are getting the impression that I didn't enjoy this game, and my writing with this video definitely could've been more clear, but that is absolutely not the case. If you stick through to my conclusion, I still really enjoyed the game. I just think that it has some problems that the MGS games before it didn't have, and I wanted to dig into those and get a discussion started on them. Like I said, I should've conveyed that more throughout the video so that people didn't get the wrong idea, but unfortunately I was only able to see the script from my own perspective, and didn't foresee that it would be perceived that way. Regardless of whether you agree with my opinions or not, thank you for taking the time to watch my stuff! I love having the discussion, but let's make sure to keep it respectful so that everyone can feel welcome to participate 🙂

One thing you may have missed because a lot of the lore is hidden in random codec conversations: It is hinted heavily in the codec conversations with Eva that the child the Boss had with the Sorrow during WW2 and then taken away from her by the Philosophers is actually Ocelot himself. What's not really hinted at is whether the Boss was aware of this the whole time. Depending on what you believe, it does put an interesting light on the few interactions they had in the story. It also puts an interesting light on the relationship between Big Boss and Ocelot being the adopted and biological sons of The Boss.
@shuboy05
@shuboy05 3 ай бұрын
This is actually confirmed in the MGS4 Database. But Kojima leaves it ambiguous whether The Boss figured out Ocelot was her son or even if Ocelot knew. Furthermore the Database states that EVA was trained at a Charm School where The Boss was an instructor. Which clears up why EVA also seems close to The Boss.

A few things I enjoyed with The End boss fight. You can completely avoid the fight by killing him when they're on the docks if you get into position and shoot fast enough. You can set your Playstation settings time for a later date and he will actually die of old age. You can shoot his bird and really piss him off.

@PlebNC
@PlebNC 2 ай бұрын
You're half-right. The sticks control your run and sneak walks. The directional buttons control the stalking walk, which is the slowest movement and drains more stamina but completely silent. Sneak walking is good for most situations however still makes some noise so if you're planning on getting close to enemies or using CQC you either need to be quick or use stalking instead.

So this game has a lot of its content in optional Codec calls. Instead of the death monologues, you get a lot of the information about the bosses through contact with Major Zero, Sigint, and so on. In fact, there are so many important details in these Codec calls, such as the game hinting at Ocelot being the son of The Boss and The Sorrow, which is why in MGS4 he looks a lot like The Sorrow. Other things like how Volgin and Raikov have a gay relationship, and some of the accolades of the Boss and the Cobra Unit during WWII. As for the boss fights, the game seems to be a lot easier, as you said, and I think the "Hard" difficulty is supposed to be the "Normal" difficulty. The other fun thing about this game is that most of the bosses can be fought in CQC instead of with guns, and playing this game while using non-lethal for all the bosses makes the game so much more fun. The Volgin and Boss fights using only CQC makes the game, especially on "Extreme" into a tense, fun series of fights. Anyways, the nice thing about the additional details in the Codec calls is that you can choose to take them in to get more information on the whole universe, but they're not required to understand the main storyline of the game. And I think this did a great job balancing the amount of cutscenes in the game versus gameplay, which some of the games in the series (get ready for 4) do a terrible job in doing.

Let's talk about dem bosses. First and foremost I'm not gonna say you fought them wrong. Whatever way nets you a victory is a right way. That being said, there is definitely a way the game wants you to fight these bosses, non-lethaly. Not only is the challenge for non-lethal takesdowns greater, to me at least, but going non-lethal also nets you special camos that all have bonuses tied to them. Ocelot: defeating him non-lethally gets you the Animal camo which will cut down on your hand trembling if you have low stamina. For some extra fun, you can shoot off his hat, or the beehives above him for some free hits. Plus if you stand next to the cliff edge with a pistol drawn he'll challenge you to a quick draw duel. The Pain: Beating him non-lethally gets you the Hornet Stripe camo which makes all bees, leeches, spider, and scorpions ignore you. Unfortunately I don't really have any fun tips or tricks for his boss fight but you seemed like you enjoyed that one anyhow. The Fear: The name of the game is stamina, his will deplete constantly forcing him to hunt for food. You can sabotage this by throwing out rotten or poisonous food to force him to throw up, costing him more stamina. In addition taking a fake death pill will cause him to come check on you before he lowers his guard, giving you a free shot, or instant kill if you have a stun grenade and the AK. He drops the Spider camo when beaten non-lethally, giving you and automatic 80% camo index at the cost of high stamina drain. The End: Uniquely you DON"T get his camo via non-lethal win, you do get his gun however. You have to hold him up to get him to drop the Moss camo, which is the only camo that can reach 100% camo and will recover health and stamina, health regen is slower, in sunlight, or torch light. For additional fun you can tranq his parrot and release it to follow back to the end, or you can kill it to make The End more aggressive but unable to find you as easily. The Fury: Invincible to your tranq darts until you slash his suit with the combat knife. He also plays a bit like the Vulcan Raven fightif you choose to engage with him "properly". You can also shoot the pipes overhead to put out some of the fires he leaves in his wake. Non-lethal takedown gets you the Fire camo, which halves damage taken by explosions...kinda weak I know but it looks cool. The Sorrow: You can skip the entire boss fight by taking a fake death pill, followed by revival pill. You get his camo by default. Volgin: Put on the Raiden mask to distract him long enough for a free hit, only works once. Plus there are pipes in the arena that you can shoot to spray him with water to weaken his electricity. Throwing a Russian Glow cap into the arena will absorb some of his lighting attacks as well. Non-lethal takedown gives you the Cold War camo. Enemy soldiers will hesitate to shoot you while you face them, will attack from behind though. The Boss: CQC! After spending the entire game getting your ass kicked, you finally get to turn the tables. With careful timing you can counter her CQC throws and throw her to ground for some free shots with the gun of your choice. Non-lethal win nets you the Snake camo, no real special abilities but is effective in just about every environment. Final Ocelot duel: It is possible to "lose" but the bullet will still be a blank. You can also choose to not fire or miss on purpose. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I hope these help you have some more fun with these bosses on future playthroughs.

It looks like you missed a few things. Firstly it looks as if you never used the stalking mechanic when sneaking up behind guards, this is crucial because this is the only way of using CQC without being heard. Also it looks like you didn't know you could interrogate guards while in a CQC grip. You can learn all kinds of cool info and even radio frequencies that heal you, and also alert cancellations and more.

IMO you missed the point of the ladder and the song. They didn't decide to play the song because the ladder is so long, but the opposite: they made the ladder so long in order to break the pace and allow the player to relax while just listening to the amazing song. Kojima is a master with unconventional gameplay to throw off the player. Stuff like the psycho mantis reading your memory card and making the controller move in mgs1, Campbell breaking the 4th wall and ordering you to turn off the console in mgs2 are other examples of it.

Hey Chole! I'd like to point out some things you missed that I'm sure others have already pointed out. 1. The bolt in your arm was not a bug. If you take too long to remove it Snake's wound will heal around it making removal impossible. A nice detail I've always appreciated. 2. Pressing the action button during the EVA section will have Snake tell her to follow. Keeping her well fed also increases her movement speed. Not a fix for that segment but it does make it slightly better. 3. Calling Sigint after fighting the Cobra Unit members will give their lore, but making that optional is an interesting choice. 4. Not only do you heal by patching yourself up, you also heal by letting those injuries heal over time. In fact, healing the long way grants a superior increase to your health. On a side note, I'm shocked you didn't mention the solution for The Sorrow "boss fight". How long did it take you to figure that out? Great video! You really kept us waiting, huh?

Fun fact about the Raikov disguise: you can be as abusive as you want to guards short of shooting them or blowing them up as Raikov as a person is a sadist and because he's Volgin's boytoy no-one can stop him. So make sure go slap a guard or 2. More practically it allows you to explore the base more leisurely, get familiar with the base ready for the escape sequence and collect items that would otherwise be a pain to get during the initial infiltration and escape section. I can't remember but I think the guard dogs in the west yard with the tanks can smell you're not Raikov though so keeping your distance from them is a good idea.

Just watching through your play throughs I notice you don't tend to use lateral thinking which was one of the highlights of the games, and sometimes that's why you don't always feel like you "got it". Like in MGS1 with mantis, changing your controller port to 2, stops him reading your mind. With MGS2 vamp, you weren't shooting the knifes but in this one, you never used the beehives above ocelot to bring him out of cover. The pain, if you want to deal with bees, in the real world you'd smoke them so smoke grenades are very effective. The fury's interesting mechanic is if you destroy his fuel tanks on his back You could of used your tranquilliser on the bosses to take their abilities, or the end talking about his endurance, and being close to death, if you change the system clock he'll die of age

Since you mentioned that you emulated the original PS2 version of the game, what type of controller did you use? And did the pressure sensitive buttons (especially the square and circle buttons) work by default, or did it require a workaround? I wasn't able to get that functionality working using an official PS2 controller and third-party adapter when I attempted it in the past. (I actually tried it with three different third-party adapters, and none of them facilitated the pressure sensitive buttons.) You could still get through the game, but it really detracted from the experience for me.

I played using a PS5 controller since PCSX2 has a built-in workaround for it! When you set up a controller it will have a bind option for "Pressure Modifier", which I set to Triangle. So as long as you hold the Triangle button, any pressure sensitive inputs will be entered at 50% while doing so (might be uncomfortable for a lot of people, but I've been using "the claw grip" since I was little) 🙂

When fighting The Fear, use a fake death pill, he will investigate you, after he turns around, stand up, throw a stun/flash grenade before he notices you, then shoot him after the flash to drain his stamina for a “no lethal” takedown, don’t matter the weapon. After you then unlock a camo

Thanks for the video! I've been waiting for this one, I like the story recaps and the gameplay perspective. I think one reason people like this game so much is there are so many Easter eggs and little secrets you can do, like saving the game and quitting while waiting for The End to die of old age, for example. Or taking the fake death pill and causing a time paradox. 😂

I had played MGS3 the entire way through and never noticed the Life Medicine. Playing the game with nothing but the auto heal was a very different experience that honestly I have more fun with the game repeating this. I personally don't have much issue with the camo thing as you only really use 5 different choice through the entire game and its an afterthought once you know which are best for which environments. Additionally you get special camos when you kill all the bosses nonlethally as well and its a rather fun challenge. Once again another excellent vid. Really interested to seeing how you feel about 4, best of luck and keep up the great work!

I'm sorry but in this day and age there's really no excuse for making the original release of Snake Eater your first playthrough, especially if you're not even going to play it on original hardware. It's not hard to find out in seconds that literally everybody on the planet suggests the subsistance version because of the improved camera and they literally just rereleased the game last year.

Did anyone mention that you can destroy ammo and health storage rooms with TNT and when you go back to those areas the guards will be super hungry with their stomachs growling and desperate for food. You can throw poisonous food at them, they will eat it and instantly die. Also since you destroyed their weapons storage, they will all be short on ammo. So when they go to shoot you after one clip they will switch to their handguns.

I was 10 or 12 years old when I found a disc in a CD Folder (we had modded PS2s) with the name "Metal Gear Solid 3" and I didn't know what it was, but I put into the console and played the game. I can't even remeber how I finished it, given the complexity of the game and I only played stuff like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Dexter or Spyro before. But I enjoyed it. I never felt so drawn to a game and a story. It was one defining moment for me. Later I got to know the other games and since then I am a Kojima Fanboy. Even with only watching half the vid, I can already see him missing so many stuff the game has to offer which is only noticeable if he actually took his time with the game. His problem with the stealth is just the matter of him being impatient and not because of skill, the stealth in this game is pretty easy to do and only require patience even if you suck at video games you can pass the guards as long as you're patient enough to wait for the right timing.

Also now that he brings it up, it does seem like the Cobra unit has less characterization in the boss battles compared to the bosses in previous games. Like yeah the lore is in the codec conversations but optimally it should be in both places, codec calls like video game codexes are not cinematic.

Dunno if you noticed this at 50:03 but it says Sigint joined ARPA. I would say that one stood out in particular for me because of what that implied. Also, Ocelot's name being Adamska implies he is Adam. And since we know Eva is not the real Eva, who is? Likely Ivan Raikov. Since Ivan is pronounced "Eva"n in Russian. He might not have been able to move freely due to Volgin requesting his presence. So Adam went instead. But Ocelot seeing Snake with someone he doesn't know, and can't trust, is probably why he didn't reveal to us that he is Adam.

If you defeat the bosses by draining their stamina they will give you their camouflages giving you a reason to take the "hard way" There are two other options to beat The End, one is when you get to the port you have a small chance to kill him and completely avoid the battle against him, if you couldn't kill him at that time you can advance the calendar one week when the battle starts and he will die of old age, as for the history of the Cobra Unit, you can call Sigint to get the details about them making it completely optional to know their stories, another thing that goes unnoticed is that Sigint is the DARPA chief of MGS and Para -Medic is Doctor Clark who experimented on Gray Fox and turned him into a cyborg, Volgin's boyfriend was modeled after Raiden because he was not well received in Japan and Hideo gave players a chance to hit him as many times as they wanted. Another thing is that there are at least 2 ways to escape from prison, one is by playing dead and having the guard enter the cell and the other is by using the code, to obtain the code there is another alternative where you have to give the guard the food he gives you, if you do it repeatedly, a cinematic will appear where the Guard and Snake have a friendly talk, the Guard reveals that his name is Johnny and he originally lived in the US, he tells us that all the firstborn in his family are called Johnny and he show us shows a photo of his family where if we use the first person we can see the code in the photo, this Jhonny huy is also the grandfather of the soldier that Meryl took off his clothes in MGS and who finally married her in MGS4

Metal Gear Solid 3 is a great game, and really up things up. there is so many things inside of it that can change the game up big time. There were some mechanics inside the game that i think you missed. Like you know you can interrogate guards for information? They can tell you about the area you were in, along with where certain items are, and even codec frequencies that can cancel alarms. Also you know you can kill the End early? When at the docks and the End is brought out sleeping in the wheelchair. After the cutscene if you equip the sniper and use it you can headshot the end and kill him so you can skip that boss fight. Also if you kill the End non-lethally, you can get his tranquillizer sniper rifle to use. Also funny thing, is that once the battle with the End starts, save and exit and use your clock to fastfoward like two weeks later, the end will literally die of old age. They even have a cutscene of it. Also this is very important as it puts into perspective the last call that Ocelot gives in the ending. The clues are given and Eva talks about it with Snake. But Ocelot's name is Adam, and he is the son of the Boss and the Sorrow. He was the baby the Philosophers took from her.

23:23 About the difficulty - That's why I wrote in that long text on your other video _"Consider playing both on Hard, especially MGS3. Normal is too easy."_ - Normal in MGS3 really should be called Easy. The Hard setting is basically what Normal should be. Or to put it another way: Hard is closer to being something that should be called Normal, than Hard. Extreme is appropriately named though (of course there's nothing really extreme about Extreme in any MGS game but in MGS3 like in the other games, Extreme is significantly harder just like it should be). Considering that, MGS3 is actually missing a true Hard setting.

The Fear has a number of gimmicks. He has a range of crossbow bolts that inflict a variety of injury types. He's mostly invisible which encourages using the thermal goggles if you found them. The arena is filled with trap which limits evasion some of which are pit traps that instantly kill you. The splits you attention between looking up for The Fear and down to avoid traps. The Fear's stealth camo drains his stamina. When low enough he uncloaks, becomes slower and will attempt to hunt for food over fighting you. This gives you a breather for your own hunting, healing or clearing away traps. You can use this to poison by throwing out a poisonous mushroom (there's some in the arena if you're unprepared) or give him food poisoning by throwing out spoilt food as he'll prioritise already spawned food item boxes over hunting. This is excellent for no kill runs as you can tranq him until he's hungry, food poison him, then get the last hits in while he's vomiting. Alternatively you can place some TNT/claymore, throw food near it to bait The Fear into it for some Wile E Coyote tomfoolery.

FUN FACT: Tselinoyarsk is actually the future site of the nation Zanzibar Land. As someone who played through MG2, this was a cool detail that blew my mind back when MGS3 came out. I was listening to the opening briefing in MGS3 and went "HOLY SHIT! GROZNYJ GRAD IS IN ZANZIBAR LAND,' as I realized the area they described as the Tselinoyarsk roughly corresponded to the geographic location described as the location of Zanzibar Land. An even cooler bit of detail is the fact that the ingame geography/Level Layout and biomes for MGS3 ALSO roughly correspond to MG2's layout too.

@@PlebNC it was definitely intentional. you don’t highlight the fact that the place you’re dropping at the start of the game is in roughly the same location as a previous game geographically speaking, then go out of your way to recreate the ecological & topographical layout of said game “by coincidence”. What’s more this fact is actually brought up in the novelization of MGS4, by Project Ito… which Kojima collaborated & had input on, reviewed, & approved… prior to its release. Thing is I picked up on this back when MGS3 released…. LONG Before MGS4 was made, much less it’s novel… to say nothing of it’s English translation.

Pretty sure the long ladder after the "end" playing the music was a bit of a troll. Was meant to make you think that was coming to the end of the game when really only half way through. Also, at the time this released there was a big push about non lethal. It is possible to beat the entire game without killing anyone. Makes a whole different challenge to those bosses you had an easy time just standing still and blasting. I also thought finding the frogs was a fun challenge.

I haven't seen the whole review yet (I'm half way there) but so far I think some of your issues come from the crunchy/deadline driven nature of this series of videos. Not a dig at all, and I can see why you would think like that about those things being annoying or waste of time. However, here are my two cents: -The bosses/cobra squad, have a lot of backstory, it's just one of those "blink" and you miss things, since a lot of them are given on codec calls after beating them. I feel Kojima did this for those players that want a more straightforward cinematic game, so instead of dragging with flashback cutscenes, he chose optional conversations. -The healing, cammo and item management, I feel might be hit or miss for some. I personally loved the back and forth from menus to gameplay. I see it more as a tactical option than an interruption, since you are not required to do it that often. Good gameplay would prevent you from taking injuries, and wound treatment should be done in safe spaces so you don't take more. And I would only change the item loadout/cammo at the beginning of the areas. But hey, I played the game back when I was 14, It was a technical marvel at the time, and I hadn't played neither of the previous ones. I think the game could be better with some really simple Quality of Life improvements, like faster loading times, and better frame rate. P.S: I remembered working really hard to get all the cammos, and I was really pissed that there was a snow cammo, but no snow level. Worst game ever, 10/10.

I think your review is very fair. The problems you cited are things that factually exist, and you have every right to cite them. I think that most of us just look back at the final cutscene, at the amazing way The Boss is re-contextualized and shown to be, arguably, the only real good guy in the whole story, and instantly forgive the game it's flaws, because the writing and character arcs and performances are JUST THAT POWERFUL -- particularly in 2004 when video games were still figuring out what stories they COULD tell, much less how to tell them this effectively. And that just gets into questions about how you review things. Does gameplay outweigh story? Should nostalgia and context be factored in?--especially if you're two decades removed from that context? I think every reviewer has to make these decisions for themselves. And, personally, I don't care how you make them, because that's your business and you're allowed to have your own opinions and I'M allowed to agree OR disagree with those opinions. At the end of the day, what really matters is that you got to take this journey at all. Thank you for bringing us with you.

It's interesting that Chole seems to prefer streamlined, smooth experiences within scope than more expansive ones. His complaints on the menu struggles here hammer that home. I think it's a perfectly valid perspective that does not have to match any other player's. Things that bother one person about a game may not bother another. Some players want condensed, intensive play experiences and don't care at all if the game feels like a perpetual gauntlet. Others yearn for freedom and exploration and discovery. It's all a matter of perspective and personal taste.

life also regenerates when you crouch in MGS2. you can toggle between the old & new camera with R3 in Subsistence, it's definitely the best way to play. there's a 60 fps code for PCSX2. stamina also levels up, but it's more granular. a lot of the difficulty from bosses comes from choosing to go non-lethal. The Fear eats food to recover, so you have to be more aware when playing like that. you are rewarded with extra unlocks. I didn't mind the Eva part, I was actually pretty invested in getting her through safely, but it was interesting seeing your perspective. 2 & 3 are definitely my favourites, the ability to mess with AI in 3 is unmatched.

Not my favorite mg game, but definitely a memorable. The setting, the switcher op to it being a complete prequel overall and origin to everything was intriguing, the attention to detail with various things you didn’t mention like you can take the end out in various ways like not playing the game for days he’ll die, or sniping him in the beginning resting in his chair replaces his fight with extra patrols. Can make codec calls hiding in a box for fun dialogue. If you get poisoned you can spin snakes model in the pause menu to make him throw up losing his poison….ect. Can definitely tell it made with passion and love, but the little things I do agree with like resorting to a neutral camo, and getting annoyed pausing for item adjusting and healing, which again the detail to healing was a great idea in grand scheme just annoying in long run. Only reason I could find to make it make sense though is it’s set way in the past, solid snake and raiden had those tech sneaking suits and even Naomi says in mgs1 she can remotely med him and such through it so I assumed the tech was farther along in timeline wise so a setting way back in past without a tech suit of sorts yea naked gotta heal himself and such idk. It’s a great game but I do find it’s not my favorite.
