Yeah I never understood why people didn't like the flood, for me that was the only satisfying part of the shooting, cuz at least you could take chunks off of them.. what sucked is going through the same copy pasta level over and over and over for what has to be more than half the game, and when it's not the same copy paste... as in exactly copy pasted... It looks like they copy pasted it and then slightly adjusted it. If you're shooting was better I could see that working, like if you had something like fear, or crysis... But having the exact same layout with the exact same enemies in the exact same hallways... I don't think I'd ever seen that before that badly.

@Travis Whalen It's Bungie's failure for not fleshing out the Covenant religion. They could have easily wrote it so that the Covenant knew Halo was basically an off switch for the galaxy, but that it would also turn those who are spiritually enlightened into beings of pure energy. If Halo was Stargate, the Covenant religion could have easily been true. Or maybe their spiritual beliefs state that the physical world is evil, and putting an end to it and and killing everything at the same time is actually a good thing. No one left to mourn, no one left alone, no one left to suffer. The believers go on The Great Journey (heaven?) and all the evil people perish or go to hell. Basically a ritual, galactic murder suicide. That's more or less what Truth made it sound like anyway.

I didn't know I could feel so much concern watching someone use the plasma pistol on enemies after their shields were gone and not realizing the magnum is your real primary weapon

The pistol is not a sniper it's pretty much the BR from Halo 2, the AR and most other weapons can kill an elite faster it's just that the pistol is consistent and satisfying.

@@StainlessPot, it wasn’t unbalanced at the time, have to understand that when halo 1 came out, the multiplayer was awesome, the pistol destroyed if you could hit your target, only to realize the other guy is pulling the same stunt, now I try the other magnums, and don’t get me wrong, they’re fun to use, and love to play with them, but the sidekick is the closest we’ll get to the OG I feel.

well said. i'm about the same age and i vividly remember all of my friends playing halo long before ii got into it. i don't know somehow when i was just watching it it didn't seem that fun. then one of my buddies bought an xbox and we decided to try out co-op. actually im pretty sure that was the first time i'd ever heard of the concept. and i remember we read the description for legendary. it's was something like "hordes of invincible alien enemies laugh at your futile attempts to survive, this is suicide." lol for some insane reason we accepted that challenge and thus began one of the fondest videogame memories of my life. we probably spent the next 2 weeks on and off trying to beat that game. i remember whenever an elite would come around a corner i'd be genuinely scared. then if it was two elites i'd just quietly take a moment to think of my loved ones and kiss my ass goodbye! but eventually we got better. we'd shave off a few fractions of a second in our reaction times here, learn how to use this power weapon there, and then at some point it finally clicked. by the time we reached the end of the game we felt like such absolute badasses. that whole experience changed the way i view game forever. co-op is now my favorite gamemode and for most games i'll at least try the hardest difficulty and see how well balanced it feels. actually it probably changed the way i view all entertainment. for me the real kick was having that group experience. don't get me wrong, some things are definitely best enjoyed solo. but having a group of friends experiencing something together is just so damn cool! so yeah, thanks halo! you helped make my childhood awesome. and the franchise is still something i like to visit once a year or so. 😀

Games were at their best on the couch with homies. Don't get me wrong, XBL is great and all, but I hated how online slowly alienated everyone. I think the whole idea of it has just become stale after all these years.

The beauty of Older Games having better storytelling, Writing, character development, etc.

Note: I said "Better" not Flawless. Certain levels aged Horribly, looking at you Library, The Beginning of Cartographer was amazing but the second half was just drawn out and lazy, I had spent a good 30 min. Before I figured out where to go next...

While I agree, how they treated the interior of both ships and the interior sections of Assault on the Control Room is why people have gripes. I love the games, and find them enjoyable start to end- even if some like the Library I drop from Legendary down to Heroic if doing a full play through normally for my own enjoyment... However, someone coming in for the first time would have good reason to gripe, especially if they played 2 first, which was released on the same system and did better in the eyes of most with what limitations it had. I am not saying that the second half isnt enjoyable, and Im not saying that they didnt aid the combat with the design. They did amazing with what they did, with the goals they had in mind. The tenser atmosphere, showing how the Flood caused massive destruction in every area you had been before, exc. The gunplay is also steller, and the interactions between the AIs is fun to both watch and interact with. However, while exciting to see the Autumn, Truth and Reconciliation and the Assault on the Control Room the first time through, the fact is its so visually similar throughout, and that leads to many players, especially those growing up with newer titles that never do this, frustrated. Hell, you could argue there is a similar problem with visual presentation in the original Quake, but you dont revisit what appears to be the same levels there and there are not largely similar pieces to the levels that you can see easily at a glance. Halo may turn every encounter on its head by doing what it did, especially AOTCR where approaching from a different elevation can easily put you on the back foot as you walk into hell, as an example. And if you look at it, theres tons different about the latter two missions but its so visually similar that people dont want to give it the benefit of the doubt. Clever as it was, the people who dont have the patience for going through what appears to be the same levels again if you dont look closer are the kinds any game designer hoping for a smash hit needs to keep in mind. And AOTCR is really the only one nearly wholesale the same in reverse. The Maw and Keyes missions do change it a surprising amount inside, but AOTCR is difficult to argue it isnt motly the same. It recontextualizes it in many ways, including the flood, heavier armament, tougher Covenant, and the inherent disadvantage of approaching from what were the Covenants positions- a few come to mind as unfavorable for fighting your way out of moreso than fighting your way in. However, that doesnt change how it is perceived, and unfortunately it is not favorable to Halo in spite of how clever it used what it did as it did.

Two Betrayals and the maze-like initial escape during 343 are my only real issues with this. Keyes felt satisfying with the exterior areas, Maw had the engine destruction ‘fight’ with Guilty Spark and the awesome warthog run after.
