The trailer for Lady Ballers, the Daily Wire's controversial new sports comedy, seemed to cause quite a stir. And now that the movie itself is out, I figured I'd take a look and find out of its actually any good.

Well this movie sucked. When South Park (who did this joke first and MUCH better) is offensive, it is usually backed up with a layered storytelling and perfectly nuanced social commentary that points out the hypocrisies of both sides within the political spectrum in order to appeal to everyone as opposed to 1 side. It utilises absurdity to ultimately lead to a core message that is the heart of the episode/movie. That is what Trey and Matt want their audience to take away from their episodes. Not that "South Park mocked Disney" or "South Park makes fun of Transgender athletes". This movie is just offensive just for the sake of being offensive. It doesn't balance both sides, it just says "our side is better". They actually want the offensive parts to be the takeaway, because all I've seen so far is videos of Ben Shapiro or Michael Knowles laughing at how triggered people are. This movie was made to get a rise out of people. This is NOT how you do social commentary.

I haven't seen it, but from watching the trailer and a number of online reviews about it, I'm confused about exactly what it's preaching. Most obviously, it tells the story from the point of view of the antagonists, who of course tend to be the villains in a conventional story. You can do that, but then you risk making evil characters look sympathetic. To be sure, the movie makes fun of them, but it also lets us understand their reasons for what they're doing. Even more confusing is the fact that the "heroic" female athletes are also the butt of jokes, getting humiliated in slapstick scenarios against the supposedly superior antagonists. You can have your protagonists suffer and even fail, but ultimately they need to prevail or the story is a tragedy. So, what exactly is the attitude of LADY BALLERS? Is it socially conservative because it's anti-trans people in women's sports and doesn't present women as sexual objects, or is it socially liberal in that it doesn't condescend to women by assuming they're too weak to suffer physical comedy and (again) doesn't present women as sexual objects? (Feminism goes in both directions, you know.) If this is supposed to be a "political" movie, it's a failure.

For a sport that had a cool concept, I never wanted to play it because it just looked brutal. That injury attracted attention because the shot came from a guy, but any shot that hit someone right in the mouth would likely do damage. It was a fun movie. The impressive part was what they were able to do on such a short turnaround, with so few established actors. I think they went from idea to filmed movie in seven weeks.

I like how you stated that this is a rough first attempt that still had some good promise, because honestly even though I haven't seen it yet, that's a telltale sign that they're on the right track they just need to get off the shoulder. From the look of it, it look like it was trying to recapture some of that old mid-2000s movie magic. It's almost like after 2008, comedy started to have a very slow demise. @redninja3056 Or, a bigger budget with access to studio resources and every comedic writer and actor in Hollywood helped maybe a little? It's stupid to compare the two as one is an indie film with a 7 million dollar budget, while the other is a major studio release animated feature with a 90 million dollar budget ("Across the Spiderverse" was $150m). Plus, don't act like liberal Hollywood doesn't release trash with poor comedy...the same studio as Spiderman releases The Marvels which was painfully unfunny...

I watched it on premier night and had similar feelings about it, though the Drinker was more harsh. I thought there were a bunch of legitimately funny gags, particularly in the first 2/3 of the movie. It was definitely too long, though, and tidying up the last act would have elevated the movie significantly for me. I thought it was a solid 7/10 comedy for a drinking night with your buddies and I applaud the balls it took Daily Wire to produce it.
