Even if you’ve never heard Tom Sawyer before, or heard Rush before, it doesn’t take too many brain cells to recognize that this is musicianship of the highest order.

Limelight is my favorite short Rush song(Xanadu is my overall fave). I love everything about Limelight- the lyrics, the music, and I can just close my eyes and listen to Alex play the guitar part of that song time after time. Some of his best playing.

Each of them is a virtuoso. Neil was arguably (not even arguably IMHO) the greatest rock drummer (and lyricist) of all time. It’s great fun watching you guys hear Tom Sawyer for the first time. If I had to choose a personal anthem, this would probably be it. Been cranking it since 1981 when it was released. Y’all also need to check out “Subdivisions” from their Signals album. 👍🏼. Also, read the literary classic “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens).

Just a friendly fyi on guitar the pedals aren't a separate instrument (I'm a guitar player, the see pedals used with an electric guitar are effects to change the sound/tone of the guitar) but in any case Alex Lifeson is an incredible guitarist (and one of my all-time favorites) so rock on brother

What is really amazing about RUSH is they play all their songs live. They are all amazing musicians. You watch some of their concert footage. Geddy Lee will be playing the keyboard with one hand, plucking the bass with the other, and also has his foot going on synthesizer pedals. All the while signing the lead vocals of the song. Pert's drumming is so out of the world, most drummers can't even keep up to some of his songs. Alex Lifeson guitar work is also so technical, it is amazing guitar work.

You are so on point. I listened to them and was "kinda a fan" for a long time, when I became friends with someone who was a huge RUSH fan and he talked me into seeing them in 1992.. when they came on stage I turned to him and asked "where's the rest of them?!" (I thought they had to be a 5 man group, they're so busy!) After seeing them, obviously, my fandom rocketed! :-)

The song is about an introverted free thinker. "His mind is not for rent to any God or government. His reserve, a quiet defense." He keeps to himself as a defense mechanism. His views are not swayed politically or through religion. He forms his own opinions based on his own experience and his observations. "He's always hopeful, yet discontent. He knows changes aren't permanent, but change is." (self explanatory, but some great lyrics) "The world is, the world is love and life are deep. Maybe as his eyes are wide" Comparing his love for what he cherishes, runs as deep as his eyes are wide open, skeptically taking in his surroundings and everyone in it.

Rush would have a hard time making it today because a lot of kids would not like their lyrics and their message. Neil Peart was a huge fan of Ayn Rand, the mother of objectivism and a radical capitalist and a huge influence on libertarianism.

Neil once said that he would never get tired of playing "Tom Sawyer" because it's so difficult to play perfectly; whenever he *did* play it without making any mistakes, it made him feel good.

I have been listening to Rush for the past 40 years, they are hands-down my all-time favorite rock band, and that’s saying a lot because there were some amazing bands that came out of the 70s and 80s. The thing about Rush is that their music evolved decade to decade. They had a progressive attitude towards their art and it showed in their performances. I would encourage you to listen to the various eras starting from the 70s into the 80s the 90s the 2000s and see how the band evolved with the times, they didn’t get stuck in one particular genre, they were constantly growing and evolving and that’s why they were so amazing! Listen to the album hemispheres, trust me. Then listen to 2112, then a farewell to kings and Fly by night. After that you’ll understand their origins. And by the way the guys in the band are Geddy Lee on keyboards and bass and vocals, Alex Lifeson on six string electric, 12 string electric and acoustic as well as others and of course the professor, Neil Peart the master percussionist and songwriter!

Aside from all the incredible stuff, In The Mood from the original RUSH album is still on my playlist. I even have a even have Roll The Bones on there as well. I haven't missed a show here in Edmonton since 1980.

Couldn't agree more! I think I literally wore out several "tape" of theirs, including Presto (Show me Don't tell me was such a surprise, so cohesive) and Counterparts. The later album I got tickets from Alex to see in Hamilton Ontario! He was super close friends with my music teacher, what a perk lol!

“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is actually the sequel book to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. Huck first shows up as a side character in “Tom Sawyer.”

Rush was under appreciated by the main stream for decades. The best bassist of all time the best drummer and one of the best guitarist as well and from everything I’ve read or heard some of the nicest people in all of entertainment period! I saw there farewell to kings tour and was blown away!!! Can’t get enough Rush!!!

Considering the crap we must endure today I'd say they're still ahead. Musicianship is dead in modern mainstream music, it's full of fake sound and absolutely meaningless lyrics. Maybe just like with CGI driven movies with shitty stories, today's young generation need to experience something real.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! I am a 51 year old man. I have been listening to this song since it came out. I have easily heard it hundreds of times. Watching, hearing and seeing them do this ( and most other songs ) I still sit staring with my mouth agape.

I used to listen to the entire side of Caress of Steel's Fountain of Lamnenth every night when I was younger to help me sleep lol. It was literally like listening to a fantasy tale, only set in a group of songs. The Hemispheres main song was basically one long story on an entire side of the album that was a follow up tale of what happened after the Rocinante passed through the black hole in the previous Farewell to Kings album song Cygnus X-1. Pretty amazing stuff when I was a kid, while everyone else I knew was listening to KISS and Van Halen.

Oh my gosh thank you sooo much for doing this Rob Squad!! From someone who is 58 years old and saw Rush live in 80 and 81 and who has been a lifelong Rush fan to see both of you being moved by this music brings a tear to my eye. Their music crosses all international, racial, cultural and economic bounds and it is so beautiful to see your positive reaction to this. When I was young Rush represented this new ground that united everyone through their music and positive message and we all loved it. My god it is so great to see that it touches you as well. Music is the great communicator and thank you so much for showing that to the world. God bless you both. The message with song is using Tom Sayer as a metaphor for voyaging into your own journey into life and seeing things as they are now not as they were then. Open yourself to your own journey. "...exit the warrior today's Tom Sawyer he get's gets high on you and the energy he trades he gets right on to the friction of the day..." Stay in the moment. It's a song about going against the tide of getting sucked into day jobs you hate and striving for a life that has some meaning.

Neil was so dearly loved by fans globally. He was a very private man and often misunderstood as unfriendly. The exact opposite was the case. He was like everyone’s super intelligent favorite uncle that would’ve helped you with your homework and truly enjoy the experience. RIP Professor

The singer's name is Geddy Lee. The guitarist is Alex Lifeson. Neil Peart is the drummer, he has sadly passed. I would vote for more RUSH absolutely. Love me some good Canadian Rock. Limelight, The Trees (this ones about American vs Canadian industry), Subdivisions.

I hadn't listened to Rush for a few years and then when there was so much turmoil (riots etc) last year, I started listening to them again. It amazed me how The Trees and Freewill both applied to the current times. I never heard The Trees were about US vs CA, I always thought it was about discrimination and oppression. It certainly fits. I love both those songs: "I will choose a path that's clear; I will choose free will."

@@chrissiecruise7196 "The Trees" can be interpreted in a lot of ways. When I was a young Objectivist (like Neil when he wrote it, interestingly), I interpreted it as a need to never strive for social equality because it would end up hurting everyone. Of course, now I'm much more philosophically and politically mature, but the song is still meaningful. Now I interpret it in light of those with resources to be magnanimous, because those whom you step on will not hesitate to take vengeance on you even at cost to themselves. And that's the mark of great art: it can speak to people coming to it from totally different perspectives.

I always saw Trees as the struggle of the oppressed (maples) wanting the higher position, while the oppressors (oaks) couldn't understand why the oppressed couldn't be happy where they were. So the oppressed (maples) formed a union, and the government came in and cut them both down to size, by hatchet, axe, and sword. Now neither one is happy.

As a 56 year old that grew up on this stuff it is really quite refreshing to see your respect and appreciation. I also saw your reaction to Spirit of Radio and I must admire the Ladies' spot on interpretation of the lyrics. They absolutely meant what you said, at the beginning radio was about talent and music and now it is all about the $$$$. A shame. Shows great character by you two and also intelligence to be willing to branch out to all sorts of music and cultural influence. A little trivia you might already know, the drummer (Neil Peart) is considered by many to be the best Rock drummer of all time. He also wrote the lyrics to this song, Spirit of Radio and almost all others. Not many bands can say the drummer is the writer, and great poetic lyrics they are. Thank you for giving me hope for the younger generation and keep up the good work, I subscribed.

If you didn't see it, the singer, Geddy Lee plays bass and sings, but he also plays keyboards with his feet, keyboards with his right hand, and slap bass with his left hand!!! He's basically doing 4 instruments at the same time!!!

"Tom Sawyer" is a song about thinking for yourself. "Free Will" has a similar theme and outstanding musicianship. I also like slightly deeper cuts like "Entre Nous" (the closest thing they have to a love song), "The Trees" "Working Man" "Circumstances" "Time Stand Still" "Second Nature" and "Red Barchetta."

@@ThePresidentialTouch that's your interpretation. everyone has their own wacky interpretation of the song's lyrics. i don't see it that way at all. the line at the end about 'noble law' and 'equality' are clearly meant to be ironic, showing, in my interpretation, that such a system of 'equality' is not possible. so if anything, i see it as anti-commie. it's about how true equality (at least amongst the trees) is impossible, and that there will always be a naturally superior race of tree (the oaks) that will inherently rule over and 'oppress' an inferior race (the maples) simply by existing according to their natural biology. the ending line about the trees being kept 'equal' by being cut down to equal size is ironic, because cutting down an oak to the same size as the maple is not actually equality. that is simply mutilating the oaks for being born who they are, which could be seen as oppression by the maples. in this scenario, equality is impossible, because either you let the oaks live as they are, and the maples will suffer and die out because of it, or you mutilate and harm the oaks just so that the maples can prosper. you cannot achieve equality, you can only shift the reigns of oppression from one tree to the other. i think the only hope for each species would be to form their own respective tree ethnostate where they can all live amongst themselves and not worry about the needs of another species

@@shallex5744 Equality of outcome has always been impossible in real life, because real life doesn't work that way, unless you introduce Communism. Yes, there is a lot of irony in Communism, and the outside force of the hatchet, axe, and saw, is that ironic force that provides equality of outcome, which, isn't present in Nature, and so the bulk of the song tells a story of trees, bitching about their natural order as to sun aquisition, and finally it's the Union of the maples that creates the organization they think they need to get the job done ( how it gets done always seems to end up an afterthought with unions) and such a fervor is reached that the outside force beckoned by said union reduces all of the trees so the smallest can't be effected in any way by anything larger than it, because there aren't any. It's the outside force that limits them all to only absorbing what the smallest of them can take in for itself, thus insuring the equality of outcome for all. So, your solution then is for those who are of the same, to gather in their own respective areas and just live among themselves. I agree that this would be a solution, and for achieving it, other areas will condemn it for causing segregation of the species, (see Hungary) and publicly portray it to the rest of the areas in the worst light possible with hidden jealousy and expounded derision. But hey, that's just my wacky interpretation.

Rush early on jokingly said amongst themselves that they would become the world's smallest orchestra. And they pretty much did. Over the decades as they decide to add other instruments to their music the question was always ok, which one of us three is going to play it. You may have noticed the pedals Geddy (the singer/bassist/keyboardist) was playing with his feet. They are Moog Taurus Pedals. It is basically a synthesizer played with the feet. Both Geddy and Alex Lifeson (guitarist) play it in various songs. It can be used for synthesized bass sound when Geddy is busy on keyboards. Or it can be used for keyboard sounds when Geddy is busy on bass. The video for Rush's song Xanadu on the Exit Stage Left tour shows them playing everything you can imagine in one song.

RusH is composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any the ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands. Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.

Well put. And there were times when Geddy was playing 6 string rhythm guitar on his double neck, keys with his feet, and Alex was leading/soloing and play the bass pedals. Four instruments, 2 guys. Meanwhile, Neil is only playing a 500 piece percussion section all by himself. Fucking live. Note for note, bell chime for funky bass line. With mathematical precision.

Geddy Lee on bass, keyboards and vocals Alex Leifson on lead guitar and certainly not least The late Neil Peart on drums and also the main lyricist of the band. They were together for forty-plus years before retiring in 2015.

Rush's lyrics, unlike a lot of rock music lyrics, are actually worth reading. Limelight for instance seems to anticipate today's social media world. Red Barchetta is another great track off that album.

Neil Peart was notoriously shy. He loved to make a music and he loved that people enjoyed the music but he hated fame and never understood it. It was well known that if people were backstage and they started complimenting him too much, they would be escorted away. Early on, he received a lot of criticism for being "stuck up" When he was just really terribly socially awkward. That's what the song Limelight is about, particularly the line "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend."

"Limelight" shows the same place they recorded in, and "Subdivisions" speaks to anyone who felt like an outcast. I'm glad I witnessed the debuts of their songs but am so happy that new generations are finding them too. Have a great day.

This is one of my favorite songs of all times. I remember hearing this song as a pre-teen back in 1980. I was nodding my head back to it then and STILL nodding my head in 2022. Mind you I was a lil black kid from the hood but I've always liked different genres of music. My friends back then didn't understood me and they thought I was weird, (I didn't care), but they understand now. I enjoyed your reaction.. Keep up the good work.

SuperDave, I think you have a point. I can't think of another Rock trio with each of its musicians in the same class as Rush. Prior to Rush, Cream probably held that distinction. I love Cream. But Rush -- wow! Maybe ELP comes close. Emerson takes a good stab at being rock's greatest keyboardist. Carl Palmer, in my view is the same class as Peart. But Neil is at the head of that class. And Greg Lake, a fine under appreciated bassist/guitarist was always more of a singer to me than a bassist.

Rush was the soundtrack to my high school years. Saw them 5 times during the mid to late 1970's. You should react to their first epic "2112," which takes up the entire A side of their album of the same name from 1976 - it was their big breakout album and a classic masterpiece.

I’ve been lucky enough in my lifetime to see Rush in concert 4 times in 3 different countries. They put on a phenomenal show no matter where they went. And they are one of the bands that will always stand the test of time. I’m proud to see you guys as a younger couple try new stuff. Keep up the good work guys.

I saw the Moving Pictures concert back in the day. It is one of the best concerts I ever saw, 3 guys, no backing musicians or singers, Geddy Lee playing bass, keyboards and singing at the same time, never was so blown away! The whole album is epic.

In my opinion, all three members are an underrated musical gods! Alex on guitar, Geddy on bass and keyboards and of course the “professor” the late, GREAT, Mr. Neil Peart on percussion!🤯🥰😍. Their music has accompanied me throughout most of my life. The Bible gives comfort to lots of people, RUSH is my “bible”

This song was one of the few Rush songs that Neil wrote with another person. This happened to be Pye Dubois (from the Canadian band Max Webster). Neil always cites Tom Sawyer as the hardest song for him to get 100% playing it live. Geddy Lee's vocals and his bass playing are amazimg

Three VERY TALENTED people. Try "Limelight" next. It's about the struggles a band faces trying to be pure in their music. Unless you want to see Neil Pert at his ultimate, try "Working Man" live. He does a solo that will leave you asking... "h-h-how???"

That was from their first album, with original drummer John Rutsey. Neil hadn't joined Rush when "Working Man" was recorded.

The live album was Peart exploding onto the scene. You are correct, of course, about him not being on the first album, but it was him on All the World's a Stage. That is the version to which I was referring.

This song was my introduction to Rush and is still my favorite by them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who recommended this, but I thought you guys would love it so I'm thrilled to see you got to it. RUSH: The Garden Their most powerful song: “The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect; So hard to earn, so easily burned.” It’s also the final track on their final album. Don’t wait too long to listen to it, it will change your life! And watch the live performance, it’s beautiful - they used a small orchestra when they did this one. They make me proud to be Canadian they really are/were (RIP Professor) stand-up guys.
