I personally love using both Instagram and pinterest for inspiration and reference photos. It's hard for me to explain correctly certain aspects that I want, so being able to point to a pic and say I like this, but I don't like that is perfect. I will never ever get a copy, though.

Amazing tips! The only constructive criticism I could add is that sometimes Instagram can be used as false advertisement. The overall premise of the video is great though. The principal of finding an artist whose artwork you enjoy is something that can rarely be doctored. I do recommend looking for rake marks and pores in the Instagram pictures of the artist though. Even with artist extremely talented in doctoring photos though.... It is something that can be exposed with careful and educated questions and choices during consultation. Which is something I really appreciate you touching on!

I personally think it's good to consider the overall look, there's so many people getting single pieces done with little forethought as in creating a sleeve, some love the random sticker book style, but some regret those first few placements that end up not fitting in with a particular flow they Invision later on. Obviously it is all about personal taste, my inspiration came from a guy that I saw while on holiday, he had a traditional Japanese arm sleeve in colour, the other arm was black and grey skulls, smoke and a motorcycle and his legs sleeves he had one Polynesian tribal and the other was superhero characters in colour and a traditional American style eagle on his chest and I just thought it looked really cool because it had a nice flow and although it is kind of a random style (not like a traditional Japanese body suit) it all just went well together as an overall look, would love to know what he had done on his back as it was completely untouched, so yeah sometimes it can be good to consider an overall look you have in mind. I have a tribal tattoo that got in like 94 I think and although I still like it but I wish I never had it because it interferes with my sleeve plan so now considering laser to lighten it to be covered.

I agree I had a stylised heart made from a word on my lower calf with butterfly’s to represent my family 9 years ago everything I planned to go on that leg since has felt wrong I’ve JUST had the out line to a half leg floral wrap with bugs n butterfly’s done wrapping around it every other idea I’ve had has felt wrong

I know I'm late but what is your sleeve plan? Because you liked the idea of having different style sleeves in different parts so what did you not like about the tribal?

@@zachoo7765 I have a Japanese black and grey left sleeve and for my right I want full colour space/galaxy theme but my tribal tattoo covers my upper arm from shoulder to elbow, it's not that I dislike my tattoo or dislike tribal, its just doesn't fit in with my new ideas, it can't really be incorporated unless I went full tribal sleeve which in my opinion is the only way to go as I've seen a few incorporate tribal into a different style and I have never seen anything that I found to look pleasing.

Another major bit of advice that I would give is to do your research on the meaning of the tattoo. I've known people that have gotten tattoos that they thought looked cool only to find out they are heavily associated with gang culture.

I usually find work from artists I love but have no solid idea on what I want. I go for a style first but I'm too controlling to give full creative freedom with no ideas to an artist. I've come to terms that I may want to cover myself but idk with what.

Literally saaame i want more tattoos so bad but im so indecisive I have a billion artists saved but the ones I could actually see myself going to like, tomorrow, are 5000 miles away. I love looking at tattoo flash bc it gets rid of the having to decide what I want problem but thats also super limiting when none of the flash of local artists is anything you vibe with

The best tip i can give you is this.When you gind online desing you like show it to your tattoo artis and say you want something similar he will most of time desing better then one you find.

I really appreciate your content! I hope your channel grows fast because you'r really helpful! At the moment I know what I want to tattoo but I'm sick of only finding the same tattoos on Pinterest. I guess Instagram is also a great place but let's hope it doesn't become the new Pinterest.. Btw how did you manage to come up with those flowers on your shoulder? I want to do some black work there. Did you look up books on botanical art for inspiration? I apologise if you have already mentioned this before.

con of living on the countryside: there's only two tattoo shops at my nearest bigger town (a couple hours from me), one of them hasn't updated their page since christmas and the other has some really ugly pieces on theirs :,,,)

That sucks. You might have to do a tattoo vacation. Having some bad tattoos I got covered just Don't Settle. My girlfriend waited and has two really nice pieces. Dunno where you are but most decent size cities have a bunch of shop. Maybe , (not give your address)!, Post up and ask what kinda shops are in an easy city to get to. Good Luck!

Most of my tattoo ideas that i have, i try to draw it so someone better than me can draw it later I have a couple tattoos that came from Pinterest And i got then exactly as the picture on Pinterest No shame in my opinion Its my body and i will carry it forever Ive never let an artist “freestyle” on me Just in case I don’t like it

I have a question, so if you see a design on Pinterest you really like and draw heavy inspiration from, can you use it as like,, a basis? Like "can I get something similar to this"? And how close/far should the design be? I personally like to make my own sketches and take pictures and things for my inspiration, but I like to see what other people think on this kind of topic.

I think the key to this is finding a good artist, if any artist ever says yeah I'll just copy that, run! But most of them have put thought in the matter already and are experienced in how close/far to go, so once you've found an artist you can actually just ask them 'hey i really love this idea, would you be down to design your version of it?' Something I have personally done already was when I really wanted a wave tattoo since I was about 15, but when time came to legally be able to get one those basic fineline waves had become soo popular and were just everywhere and I didn't want to also just copy those, since I spent quite some time on tattoo instagram already I found an artist whose style i really liked, she often did 'woodgrain' style tattoos so I asked if she would be able to do a wave in this sort of style and it came out amazing!

@@enna6507 Actually I don't get this kind of logic. It's like expecting from a barber to not do the exact same haircut on someone because another barber had already done it first. I will never understand this gate keeping mentality of tattoo artists, it would be seen as an asshole thing to have it in other professions, so I don't get why tattoo artists can't put their ego aside for a thing like that and just accept that other tattoo artists might copy a design they made, especially if it looks basic as hell like the one with the eyes in the video

How can you approach choosing a tattoo style? I'm interested in japanese trad, american trad, and perhaps neo trad. I'm in analysis paralysis though because I feel like if I start building an american trad leg sleeve, a japanese trad arm piece won't look coherent

I feel a good artist will end their work elegantly so it is coherent with whatever you choose to add next to it. It sounds so great I would just ask what your artist might do, if that was your idea, to end the piece so it ends non abruptly.

Honestly my artist is fab for her I asked another artist! I simply found an artist that was great but he was total opposite of the style I wanted he was a graffiti specialist ( I’ve actually recommended him to my brother ) said hey do you know of any black work specialists in the area I just wanna compare a few and see if they could mabey help me out because the styles are different he had no issues recommending a few and joked that if I worked with any to tell em they owe him a referral fee😂 ( I always look for a “specialist “ over a general artist cos they’re passionate about that area of the tattoo world and want to master it you always get better results

What's the big deal with getting a copy? A barber can do the same haircut another barber had done. A cook can make the same dish another cook had done. Filmakers, musicians and artists etc can draw heavy inspirations from one another so why is doing a copy of a tattoo seen as that bad?
