Soap making video for the Soap Challenge Club September 2020 - Ultra-Thin Horizontal Swirls: Advanced Category using 5 or more different solid colored soap swirls in addition to the base colour with a secondary swirl.
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
It has been one whole year since I have joined the soap challenge club and I think I have learnt so much! The challenge this month is another challenge that requires a good control of trace to show the ultra thin lines. The technique looks easy to do but there needs much more attention to detail such as the trace and the amount of soap, the amount of colours, colour combination and how you pour.
The colourants I used in this video were:
White - Titanium Dioxide
Black - Activated Charcoal
Red/Pink/Orange - Mica
Essential oil blend: Lavender and Patchouli
Time links to the video:
0:25 Mixing of lye solution and oils
0:43 Adding essential oils
1:04 Splitting the batch
1:07 Colouring of the soap
1:33 Pouring of the base soap
1:50 Pouring of the solid coloured lines
2:18 Swirling of the soap
3:12 Drawing cut lines
3:27 Secondary Swirl
3:52 Finished photo
I think this technique would be best completed in a large mould especially if you aim to use more colours. That way you get more soap to pour your colours and it's best to pour the colour from a higher distance to distribute the soap into the base. It's a surprise that the mica colour morphed into an orange and it turned out to be an interesting design looking like a fire flame.
Thank you Amy for organising such a challenge again. For more information about the Soap Challenge Club: soapchallengeclub.com/
