Nice Barber chair... I recommend not working alone until you get more experience dropping trees.. that's just my friendly advice

That would definitely be a handy addition- I must've missed your install video; I'll go back & check it out.

Good video, yes it is hard to video something like that with so much going on all at once. I sure do like the arrangement you came up with. A very good idea. Thank you.

Very nice winch setup. I am building my own using some of your ideas, thanks for sharing the build video! If you cut the heart out of hardwood first, it won't split like that so you don't have to worry about flying death stakes:)

Nice video. Looks like a good spot to live. I'm looking forward to any stump removal videos you might do.
@SoatMon3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! I don't remove many stumps. Living in the country I usually just let them rot. The ones I have removed I ripped the roots with the tractor and then pushed them out.

Noticed something the second time I watched the video. Did you have a remote to operate the winch, it appeared like you did. That in itself is very impressive. I suppose some of the electric winches for trucks must have that option. Never have seen that before. Thanks again for this video.
@SoatMon3 жыл бұрын
It's a cheap winch from harbor freight but comes with a remote. Very handy. Makes it possible to pull as you cut. Usually I cut the tree until it starts to lean then pull it over with the winch. This one just fell.

Good video, thanks, but the winch looks like a standard shop bought electric winch, mounted on a home-made frame.

I have a Warn winch off of a 65 Dodge Powerwagon that I think I want to mount on the back of my tractor since I'm always cutting firewood alone, mostly I want it to drag tees to a road after cutting down. Any comments?
@SoatMon Жыл бұрын
You will need a very large battery/12v supply and I think your winch will get too hot. It will also take forever. Electric winches are not made to move things very far. I use mine mainly as shown to make trees fall the way I want. When I need to drag a tree up a hill I use the tractor and some snatch blocks, its much faster. Good luck!

Did that tree barber chair ?
@SoatMon2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I don't remember. They often do if you pull on them too hard. I'm usually not too worried about quality of the fallen tree since I am making most of them into firewood. I just want to make sure they don't fall on something important.
@michaelpendleton67252 жыл бұрын
Its not the quality of the log that matters its your life that matters. Having pressure on a tree like that when you are cutting could cause it to explode or barberchair even in a direction to the side of where you are pulling. Your method scares me and i truly hope you never have anything bad happen using this method.

Did you hook up the winch power cables directly to the tractor batter? If so any problems with the charging system? I am planning to do the same but the tractor battery does not have the recommend CCA's which is 650 min for the winch. Thanks in advance..a new sub.
@SoatMon2 жыл бұрын
It is directly to the battery. I haven't had any problems but this is also not something that I use every day.
@kidhenderson82602 жыл бұрын
@@SoatMon Thanks....I will only use mine to skid a few logs up from a hilly area. I will get a dual purpose battery for my tractor with more Ah and cranking amps. I just read allot of conflicting articles regarding battery CCA and charging etc. for using a winch. My existing battery is only 550CCA and the winch requires 625.
@trickster8635 Жыл бұрын
@@kidhenderson8260 The 625 amp current draw is at maximum load, it is not the running current that can vary from 120 to max amps at full load. Regardless, just increase your pulling power and reduce current draw by using a 2 to 1 snatch block layout.
@kidhenderson8260 Жыл бұрын
@@trickster8635 Thanks. Been using it with no issues. I did replace the tractor battery with a 1100 CCA one just for the cold weather as well. Like u I do not use everyday either.

Why would you not take a wedge out of the front of the tree, traditionally for felling of trees? With the wedge out it would be a lot safer than the way you did it and with the use of the winch even safer.

One of the most dangerous ways to drop trees. Barber chairing a tree with a winch can get deadly very quickly. Hope you'll learn how to cut trees in the future. No body should take this as an example of good woodsman ship.

But can you winch yourself out if your tires are buried and suction cupped into the worst mud with no bottom and only one tree at 45 degrees or worse? I’m in a pickle!!
