Alcohol is normalised in society, despite being an addictive harmful drug. Its the only drug we have to justify NOT taking! There is a movement towards mindful drinking and choosing sobriety and its incredibly liberating to be free of the 'wine o clock' culture. Many of us are 'grey area drinkers' who would benefit from taking a break from the booze to access a whole array of positive benefits. Lets change the conversation around alcohol! " Janey Lee Grace is an Amazon No 1 Best-selling author, commentator, and co-presenter on the UK’s biggest radio show, BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright in the Afternoon. She runs the popular recommendations blog - imperfectlynatural.com.
Janey has written five books on Holistic living including the number One Amazon best seller Imperfectly Natural Woman and currently writes columns for many magazines, and runs training workshops and consultations on Media Breakthrough for holistic businesses and solopreneurs. She hosts the annual Janey Loves Platinum Awards to recognise the best in natural and organic products and services with categories for practitioners and wellbeing authors. After ditching the booze Janey has launched a podcast ‘Alcohol Free Life’ focusing on sober self-care." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Love this ted talk! Got to 52 days sober but sadly relapsed. Now it's been 27 days of sobriety since then, and I'm doing so well. I even went to a party with my friends who are BIG on drinking and I didn't have a drop. I'm so proud of myself! ❤️

Yes, but in my experience as someone with 1 year of sobriety, I don’t feel like I “gave up” anything. I simply stopped doing something that I realized was only making me unhappy - in other words, I came to see there were ultimately no positives to drinking.

I stopped in April 2009 and never looked back. The alcohol free trend is very heartening. It's a joy to go to a party, to dinner, etc., an never worry about drinking too much, hangovers, etc. For those of you thinking about stopping -- go for it. You won't regret your decision.

It just blows my mind that drinking a poison is socially acceptable. Commercial, magazine ads, billboards, drinking is everywhere you look. There's a bar on every corner, basically a crack house on every corner. The amount of deaths per year because of alcohol is staggering. The relationships it ruins is staggering. How and why have we let it get to this point? Mind blowing.

i never was an alcoholic, however i stopped drinking 5 years ago. the change of my life is incredible. the way i use my time is just another world. what i can say is besides alcohol being a poison, it is a WASTE OF TIME, ENERGY... be smart! don't get brainwashed into alcohol. many people try to ridicule me too.. they just ridicule themselves. they say i abstain, and restrain myself from enjoying... well i have other ideas of enjoying myself. i dont have to abstain. my body does not like/want alcohol. wake up!

in my fridge there are cold bottles of water and Dr. Pepper now. I had started drinking back in 1999 6 years after my parents were killed. I was like "This will definitely help" Oh but I would never get behind the wheel while intoxicated. First and last DUI, wound up crashing my truck in to a ditch. This was in 2007. Alcohol would never have me in its grips. Oh how wrong I was about everything. That alcohol elevator had hit bottom and continued on through to the earth's crust in to the mantle taking me along with it. 3 years sober now

I quit drinking alcohol this past March right as COVID-19 began to take a stronghold here in the US. I had been sober curious for a few weeks leading up to that point, and when I stopped I didn't think I could give it up completely. I read several books about sobriety and watched many videos just like this one, and that really helped me to stay on track. Quite honestly, becoming sober was the BEST decision I ever made in my life. On the surface, I was not considered an "alcoholic," but I still drank enough on most occasions to the point where I experienced hangovers, headaches, and anxiety constantly. I feel so much more free, joyful, and strong without this substance that most people struggle to live without. Not every day is easy, but it is so worth it. And this video hit the nail on the head with the quote, "the opposite of addition is connection." Even 6 months later, I still take it one day at a time!

28 days sober of alcohol here! 30 years old, and decided to give it up for life! Now I say I’m not an abuser of alcohol, but going a week or so and then having two bottles of wine and half a bottle of gin in one sitting, throwing up all over your bedroom, waking up the next day single as you’ve dumped your girlfriend by text, Lying to her that you cheated when in fact you didn’t, and you have no recollection of doing this! That was the moment I decided I’ve had enough. I’m not the person I was when drunk, I never will that “person” again! Stay strong everyone reading this.

17 days without a drink. Quit for 1 year in 2007, 1 year in 2009 and 1 year in 2017. Went back every time fooling myself into thinking I could moderate and control my drinking. Starts out ok and builds and builds over time until drinking to excess twice a week. Sick of it. I really feel like I’m done. I’m 42. I really don’t want to wake up at 52 regretting another 10 years wasted on hangovers and missed opportunities due to this horrific poison.

I didn't want to get sober. I definitely needed to get sober. I was forced to AA or lose my daughter. I thought, "fine. Ill stop drinking long enough to move away. That was thirty years ago. Some of it has been wonderful and some has been....not so much wonderful. Isn't that life? Just because you don't drink today isn't a commitment to not drink next week.....or tomorrow . Find a way of sobriety that works for you. Relapse does not have to be a part of your story. But if you are HERE, maybe check out a way or two of sobriety. You can always drink later.

Talking about it is a great 1st step-that’s the hardest thing to do. I heard Naltrexone is very helpful to cut down on the beneficial hit of drinking...you’ll figure out what you need to do next. It always starts with intention and awareness/consciousness...🙏🏼

Dante 🙏🏼❤️ seek the Lord Jesus Christ and walk into an AA meeting and your life will be changed forever. I was hopeless for 8 years and now with Jesus and AA I am almost 3 years sober with a whole new life. I am the man I always wanted to be, God bless you.

I've listened to Janey on the radio for years. she's excellent. I didn't realise she had a problem with the booze though. nice speech Janey, and very well done.

So we're in Lockdown lll, and I've decided to abstain from alcohol during Lent (as well as bread n crisps) It's very interesting to observe the reactions I'm getting from friends regarding this, particularly the incredulity during this time. It is acceptable and approved of to get hammered right now, drinking to forget our shared pain of not going out (to the pub) I find it fascinating to observe my own thinking of this socially acceptable addiction. Thank you for your talk. Cheers 😉

I went 2 years and 9 months sober relapsed at my favorite NFL team home opener a few years ago. Just downloaded a sober app choose not to drink for the next 24 hours. The one day at a time mentality helped me on my journal my first rodeo, I’ll be using the same mindset this time 🙏🏾

I thoroughly enjoy watching this. This past year during the pandemic my alcohol consumption dropped, I had money in the bank, had some energy, and I have boxes of booze in my basement UNOPENED! Heck, most of the time I forget I even have it. It’s to the point where I’m practically giving my stash away. After this past quarter century of downing booze like water, it’s like I’m done! Last few times I had a drink, I had one or two sips, and that was it for me.

I can soo relate to this! I didn’t have any alcohol until I was 31 but after 3 years of drinking I started to realise that I had a problem and going T total for the foreseeable future was my best option. Now 2 months sober 😅 plan to be sober for as long as possible now 😁

For me it was a habit not an addiction! Still hard to give up but I’ve switched from beers to seltzer and 🤷🏻‍♀️ fine! It’s been 52 days first break I’ve ever taken in 23 years and I didn’t realize the benefits to giving it up! Biggest thing I’ve learned is that I’m not depressed I don’t have depression but I do when I drink
