Social technology is simultaneously connecting us and isolating us. It’s affecting everything from our basic social relationships to the way that we work, learn and experience. Social media should be a support to real relationships, not a catalyst to losing them. Kristin Gallucci speaks to marketers about Marketing with emotion to move brands to align with customers and act with passion. Kristin has over 20 years of experience leading strategic digital marketing, social media, influencer engagement, and analytics initiatives for brands. She’s a Linkedin Top Voice for Marketing & Social Media, is sourced in Inc. Magazine and Adweek, and currently leads strategy for digital marketing at the top franchise brand Signarama for the signage industry. She founded Modern Marketer, a consultancy that helps companies make better connections with their audiences. She speaks regularly on topics such as the changing world of marketing, LinkedIn optimization, and personal branding. She also serves on Board of the American Marketing Association. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It's a very good topic. Although the speech was quite short, I was very impressed with the message conveyed. I think that what is said is true. People become unfriendly because they spend most of their valuable time using social media and rarely interact directly with other people. The implication of excessive use of social platforms is that they move away from friendships and relationships that actually occur in real life. It not only prevents them from being gregarious but also turns humans into addicted creatures devoid of emotion and compassion for others. Someone becomes more interested in social media to do various things or activities. I totally agree with his statement that technology is not a wrong invention. The ones to blame are themselves because they don't know how to use social media properly. In addition to being socially isolated, a person may also become an individual who lacks empathy and is self-centered. thank you for this excellent talking video.

I 100% disagree. Even people who "excessively" use SM platforms often have excellent relationships in person. People act as if it's an either/or proposition. It's not.

Watching this in 2022.. Noticed how people dont communication even digitally anymore? New updates just let us "react" to messages friends send us. We no longer even text properly. For social apps, these updates sure are making us unsocial. People go on dates, meet friends, and are on their phones. The irony is, most of us probably got this video link through social media

Just deleted my Facebook after more than 10 years. Feels a bit weird, but I'm glad I finally did it. I think the only social media that still bring some actual value is YT, and even that depends on how you use and how much.

I agreed with everything Kristin Gallucci says. I work on computers, and I teach online continuing education courses part-time, but I would never want to live in the cyber world as opposed to the real world. I find that if you really want to win someone over, get that person in your camp, and ensure that person truly has your back (and vice versa), you have to develop a relationship with that person that is interpersonal based on real world chatting, interaction, and working together to get the job done. Social media, email, and texting... all of them fall flat as compared with real world interaction when it comes to developing relationships of all sorts.

@@kristingallucci338 Agreed. I actually currently for school, am writing a paper on social media. I think yes, social media may help connect more, but it makes us less productive! So I'm thinking, instead of using social media to be productive, we should be productive for social media! If that makes sense....like instead of first sitting on the couch scrolling facebook or insta or whatever, get up and do some work. Workout, create a birdhouse do something! THEN maybe share it on social media, and help encourage others to get off electronics and do things. I say, do more of life that you do social media. Be more productive people! :D

My sentiments exactly. Let's get on board people and go back to we connected face to face. Sit down to a real conversation, not missing out on those precious moments of your toddlers, grandparents, family overall. Kristin is so right, it's killing marriages/relationships on so many levels and even friendships. I can vouch for friendships, as I've turned away from many due to their needing to connect only online. They have time for online but not a phone call, meeting out n about. Life is too short. YES you too can live without.

That’s fine, but realize that everyone needs at least some level-smaller for some or larger life others-of socialization in person. Even if it’s an occasional in person class at a community rec center, a passive listening to lunch friends talk, a hug from a relative or close friend (or pet), or an occasional greeting or smile exchanged with a friendly cashier.

She speaks as if we're one big monolith with the same experiences, etc. Social media and real-life interactions are not an either/or proposition. It's very easy to do both. If someone wakes up at 7 and goes to be at 10 every single day, that leaves plenty of hours to interact with people online and also in real life.

I’m 19, in my view, Social media changing the way people communicate now with one another is what makes it’s hard for many like me who wants to connect with others in person to establish unbreakable relationship or friendship instead of just doing it virtually. Plus I don’t know what it’s like to be in a serious committed relationship with someone who will never leave my side and truly love me no matter what. Most girls during my time love hanging out with men my age who have resources to take care of their women to buy them whatever they want. The game has changed drastically because of social media.

“Demons” are just “memes” that we either use … or are used by. Yes: there are wonderful advances of technology, but the dangers of social Media misuse-both the intentional flooding of misinformation and the intentional over marketing to capture endless attention & time are very, very real for more and more susceptible people. I’m very glad some researchers are looking at the positives of in person social interactions and discovering the differences that social media makes … vs just selling their services to digital companies on how to trap more viewers.

You're right there are a lot of positives, this TED talk is to spread awareness of the negatives. Maybe my next talk is on the positives!

i dissagree with this opinion. I think social media is a great way to socialize with other people and make new friends. But be carefull you dont know these people they could be dangerous. it isint called social media for no reason.

a) If you get sick, will your social media friends be able to still be their with you? b) Can you get the same feelings-hormones-from social media as from a handshake or from a hug? c) Can you incidentally run into another human and have a small, short, human connection with someone on-line? I ask sincerely because my ex constantly insisted that she had plenty of friends… but I never saw her go out, meet with friends (outside of work interactions), and never invited anyone over.

I would say yes. KZfaq as well. As I am writing this comment I'm engaging and communicating with people online (most of whom I don't know) and not in person. I'm glued to my device as I engage with people online.

@@svetcovladich9996 but then its not as engaging as Facebook or Instagram. It has certain restrictions like you can post stories, tweet something, post photographs whereas in yt you just are able to like, comment subscribe and watch. Also the new feature of yt called community or something where owners of the channel post photographs and stories but they aren't as much engaging as Facebook or Instagram.
