I'm actually really happy to know that you guys used to have problems with talking to people and that you overcame them, because it takes power away from the illusion that all people who are comfortable being social are naturally that way. I tend to use that as an excuse to stay the way I am (very quiet because of fear of being awkward, awakward- you have to speak sometimes, and those sometimes don't usually go well-unintentionally standoffish, rarely leaves my room or house or talk to my flatmates).

Thomas,it sounds like you're an ambivert (like me). Someone who was a mix of introverted and extroverted traits. I also enjoy socializing but I often need time alone to recharge afterwards.

Leah Wilton same like me aswell, I enjoy socializing with people I know but when I'm greeted with someone new, I become pathetically shy. I don't know if anyone feels the same.

I am an introvert...I am a shy person and its hard to talk to people, evrytime someone comes up to me to say something to me or ask me questions i tense up and sometimes i get nervous. Its humiliating at the same time...especially if its a dude... like I cant believe like a guy is talking to me as if the guy has any interest in me LOL. Call me crazy if you like cuz sometimes i feel like i am lol. But you know what, I have two brothers so what can be the problem? Well the fact is yes I am shy and thats partially my fault becuase i dont talk to anyone and yes i have friends in high school but there were all girls becuase i went to an all girls school for 4 years! And yes i was shy even then... i dont know i may have social anxiety who knows. Thanks for listening :)

I DO use those conversation starters, I comment people, mostly other women, on clothes cause it's an interest. But as an example of your point, I said I liked a coworker's jacket, (I haven't had a conversation with her, yet) and she mentioned it was her late father's and she bought it for him. I thought that was pretty personal and I was glaf she shared that w me because I've had a similar experience where I loved this leather backpack my dad used and, when he died, I adopted it. So we got to sort of bond after the quick comment I made.

I really enjoy listening / watching your podcasts. They are well structured, but still it is like listening to a conversation between friends. Funny, easy to listen to and still many useful information and insights. Thanks to both of you.

Such a good podcast. Love that we can watch it as well as listen and that the podcast is real - no editing. Love the what you see is what you get! Think it's great for you guys to talk about confidence and how you felt at school and how that has changed compared to now. I think as we get older, people feel less comfortable discussing how being social and appearing confident can be difficult.

"Pygmalion" is one of the most popular plays of George Bernard Shaw and "My Fair Lady" was the cinematic adaptation of the play produced by WB. It won a couple Oscars if I am right. And It's been a long time since I watched it, but I don't think they used marbles. But they did that in "The King's Speech"(2010). If you haven't watched it yet, you should definitely check it out!

Hi Tom! Towards the beginning you mentioned MBTI and how you were unsure about being typed as an extrovert. I used to read quite a bit about it so I wanted to share my thoughts with you! The more popularized test for MBTI usually plots one trait "versus" another like E vs I, N vs S and measures it in being "more E" and "less I" or "less J" and "more P". I found it a bit too black and white over time, as I'm sure everyone's personality fluctuates a bit throughout their life or even every day. For example, I personally feel extroverted at night but severely introverted in the daytime. When I had read more into MBTI, I discovered the cognitive functions; they're an assortment of the introverted and extroverted ways of expressing different functions. So when you see S(ensing) or (i)N(tuition) or F(eeling) or T(hinking), there are extroverted and introverted ways of expressing each one and those are the cognitive functions - they kind of describe your processing style. In order to figure out your type, you must plot out the order of your cognitive functions from "strongest" to "least". There are many tests online that test your cognitive functions but the most reliable way is to be typed by someone who understands the cognitive functions and their "tells". On many cognitive functions tests recently, I've gotten the order of Fi-Ne-Si-Te (INFP). When I was younger, I commonly got Ne-Fi-Te-Si (ENFP) which has the same 4 dominant cognitive functions as an INFP, just in a different order. As a result, I could see how my personality could fluctuate - especially since I was a lot younger at the time and probably less "stabilized". The "version" type of your primary function (mine being Fi for introverted Feeling) should match whether you're more an introvert or an extrovert. Of course everything is always on a spectrum, though! Sorry if it sounds a bit complicated! I also don't mean to assert any of this as complete truth, this is just the gist of what I've picked up from being really into MBTI in high school and I could be reciting things incorrectly. However, it really helped shed some light on understanding how I behave and other people's varying and valid perspectives! :)

A N MBTI has helped me understand myself better too. INTJ here. It may not be 100% scientifically solid but the cognitive functions for each type can seem eerily accurate.

A few months ago I got a WeWork membership for a desk and it's easily been the best productivity decision I've made, I've also met a lot of like minded people there which is pretty cool. Working from home just isn't an option for me since I just constantly want to nap
