Yes, based on real story. The real names of the survivors were kept. Numa was the last person that died before the rescue came. Some of the survivors have done cameos in this movie. Good reaction.

Some details that usually go unnoticed: - They had never seen snow -The highest mountain in Uruguay is 516m. (for real) -They didn't have time to aclimatize to the height an they were suffering from altitude sickness. -They were at over 4000m. At that heights and temperatures you need to eat at least 10.000 Kcal just to survive.. -They didn't have any mountain equipment, only had mocassins and rugby shoes

For me, these are some of the anchors of their story. On paper, it's 100% impossible. I am forever humbled by these heroes.

@@wlsonAnd the doctor who receives Roberto Canessa IS actually Roberto Canessa. The director asked a few of the survivors and relatives to be on the film. Also at the beginning of the movie there's a scene where Numa gets home and says hello to a neigbor, who's played by one of Numa's nephews.

I think we all would have done that had we been in their shoes. However, Numa ate as little as possible and that’s exactly what weakened his body. Now, these boys being Christians (most of them) compare that act of antropophagy (different than cannibalism) to the holy communion of Christ, when he compared his body and blood to bread and wine, and invited his apostles to eat from that. Eventually, the Catholic Church came forward and told the survivors they had done what was correct because otherwise they would have given up on life, which is one of the greatest sins. Still, some newspapers were very sensationalist and called them “the cannibals of the Andes”, some even had the headlines “may God forgive them”. There are some pictures of the corpses, only shown in a very obscure documentary that can only be found in Japanese 😅 They were heavily criticized by some people; but that was at the beginning. Once everyone understood just how terrible their situation was, they were understood, embraced, congratulated and posed as heroes for this incredible feat of surviving in one of the most dangerous places on earth.

You are right, the pope actually wrote to them and congratulated them on their courage, and as you say, told them they did what was expedted from a good christian, to live, because god put us on the earth to live, not to die, and that being them alive, not to have eaten, it would have been like suicide.

By the way, there is a short interview by netflix to the sister of the team captain, one of those who died with the avalanch... its beautiful and hearthbreaking, since the accident she didnt read anything about it, nor watched documentaries, not the movie that came out in 1993(not very good movie). And she some times went to reunions with the survivors and some family members of the ones who died, but even in those reunions she never ever spoke about her brother or asked about it. But she went to see the movie with the survivors and families of the ones who died. And she loved it even tho it was hearthbreaking for her but at the same time she said she felt liberated by it.

His teeth being like that is probably a result of scurvy though it usually takes longer for scurvy to develop. Maybe their diet was far more lacking/extreme than others who ended up with scurvy. In his chapter of the book ‘Society of the Snow’ Moncho relates how hands froze while he was trying to dig people out. He peed on his hands to warm them up. That helped for a short time but his hands froze again so he started to dig with his closed fists and when his fists froze he dug with his elbows.

I think it might also be sped up a bit due to how many calories they were burning being in the high altitude. Maybe their bodies needed more vitamins in their diet due to this and without them the onset of scurvy came faster. But that is just a theory I have. I have a fear of teeth falling out or moving (adult teeth) and seeing that genuinely made me cringe during the film. I also wonder, as an ex dental student myself, how badly their teeth were decaying during their days on the mountain.

Amazing reaction, thank you for sharing it. A few facts: Nando made quite a recovery because even when his head swelled with the impact, his head was facing the cold metal of the plain and it served as a very cold ice pack to heal the swelling and make him better. The idea he had to want to eat the bodies came out of anger that the pilots' negligence got them to be stuck in the mountain helpless. Let's not forget he lost his mum, sister and 2 best friends. Nando's anger it's what pushed him to want to get out of there no matter what. They were peeing black because of severe dehydration. Fito was the one who thought of making water, glasses to protect their eyes from the reflexion of the sun in the snow and also chose the bodies that would be eaten along with his cousins Daniel and Eduardo. Carlitos the young person who crashed into the suitcases with his car in the airport was a spoiled child who came from a wealthy family. He was very spoiled, he even had a nanny, after this trip his perspective of life absolutely changed. In the plane, he was in charge of making sure there were not drafts in the plain or reduce the possibility of drafts using the suitcases and plane seats, he was very good at it. He also was the one who made the sleeping bag that Nando and Roberto used to sleep in during their walk to Chile. They had so many cigarettes because in Chile cigarettes were scarce and Javier Methol, the man who lost his wife on the avalanche worked in a Tabaco company so thought it was a good business to take a lot of cigarettes and sell them in Chile. Numa did not injured like that in the real events, someone walked on his leg by accident because the lack of space in the plane and because he was not eating his body did not have much strength to recover from the bruise. He was the last one who died and his death pushed Nando and Roberto to say Fuck it lets do this, let's save ourselves because no one else is going to. The actual survivors loved this version more than the 1993 version, because it doesn't idolise the survivors as the heroes, instead recognises and considers those who died and their memory. Reporters keep digging in a very nasty way how they survived, what did they eat, etc. The survivors were very secretive and ashamed about saying they ate human beings and were scared to be judged being Catholics by their families and friends also go jail. They had a press conference were they answer to reporters question ONCE instead that addressing the situation 100000 times to every reporter who asked. The actual survivors made a Kameo in the movie, Daniel, Nando, Roberto and Coche Inciarte were is different scenes. The reason why Zerbino would not leave without the suitcase it's because he hoped that tokens from the death people, like personal belongings such as jewelry, rosaries, ID's, letters written before dying were taking back to give to their families. That actually happened the real survivor refused to leave without the suitcase. In the movie isn't shown but the rescue was in 2 stages. They have to rescue one lot that day and the next lot the day after, so some had to stay another night waiting for the other helicopters to arrive. Those left behind the first day were left with food and a team of rescuers. A survivor said the rescuers were scared of them after seeing all the human remaining all over the place.

Nando was actually left outside, because they thought he was already dead. His head was on the snow, that cold was what saved him. One of the other survivors (I believe it was Roy Harley) brought him back in the plane that first night when he realized he was still alive. They left him alone, did not move him anymore and that along with the freezing snow he got while outside, is what helped him to survive.

small correction, the rescuers sleept at a tent outside the plain not because of fear, but the smell, the plane interior smelled horrible after 70 days, there was blood, and other fluids not to mention their own smell of 70 days without showering, yes it was cold but they crashed at the start of spring so the cold was already comming down.

Hello and greetings from Argentina. The film is based on the deceased and not on the survivors, of which a lot has already been talked about; As the father of one of the deceased said "those who died were the ones who saved the 16 who survived, there is no complaint or reproach." They did not "ate" women or the sick. Carlitos Paez, represented his father in this film, and the scene had to film nine times because he "broke in crying, by naming some." The jacket he uses is the same as his father that day, and that he kept it at home, like a treasure.

I'll be commenting here hoping to help with some questions you had (forgive me if i make some mistakes, eng is not my first language): 1) Black pee is a real medical thing! something related to kidneys-liver failure because of the lack of food and water. 2) Human flesh have this thing called Prions (I think), I'm not sure if they're everywhere in our body or just the brain but it does cause damage eventually. Something like the mad cow disease. And I'll leave some facts that I've collected since the first time I watched this movie bc im still obsessed with the story. -Nando Parrado had a skull fracture (that's why he has this crazy raccoon eyes during the movie), everyone thought he was already dead and left him outside in the cold with the rest of the bodies, surprisingly this helped to reduce the brain swelling and he woke up three days after (like mf jesus christ) and ended up saving them all. -Some of the survivors made cameos in the movie! The real Nando Parrado is the one who opens the door for his actor at the airport, Roberto Canessa (now one of the greatest cardiologists in his country) walks behind his actor at the hospital, and the real Carlitos Paez played his own dad, is the one reading the names.

17:35 about the consequences of eating human flesh while being human, yes, there are and the victims of the accident suffered them. Constipation was the consequence of this diet, some found it difficult to move due to hemorrhoids. The survivors say that when one of them managed to defecate, they applauded him.

Some facts about the movie: Three of the survivors made cameos in the movie: - Fernando "Nando" Parrado: opens the airport door to his character at the beginning of the movie. - Roberto Canessa: Plays a doctor when they are received at the hospital because he is a doctor in the real life. - Carlos Paez Rodríguez: Represents his own father (Carlos Paez Vilaró) when he reads the list of survivors reading the name of his own son (“Carlitos Miguel Paez, my son”). - The house where Numa arrives is the real Numa's house and the walker is a Numa's nephew. - The suitcase that Gustavo Zerbino didn't want to leave in the Andes was full of belongings of the deceased that he took to their respective families. - The actors underwent a diet under strict medical supervision so that their bodies would more realistically reflect the effects of what the survivors went through. - The survivors and the families of those who passed away say that this movie is much more faithful to the real events, unlike the film 'Alive!' which was more of a spectacle than a tribute. In addition to changing the names of the characters, they altered almost the entire story. - All the survivors (except for 2 who died in 2015 and 2023) are still alive. You can search for their accounts on Instagram. - The location of the accident (Valle de las Lágrimas [Valley of Tears]) can still be visited today, starting from Argentina (as it is a substantially shorter journey): it takes several days on horseback and hiking through the mountains. It requires several days of planning and good physical condition. - They were there for 72 days. On the first day of rescue, they took some of them and a group of rescuers stayed who set up a tent a little away because of the smell. The next day they rescued the others. Hugs from Argentina. 🤗

"Alive" was a Hollywood version of the facts where they didn't even speak the original language, changed the names and added things for shock value. ThIS movie is a most respectful tribute to both survivors and dead and so true to the facts the real survivors said they felt they were back up the mountains. I prefer this one better precisely because of the depth of the story and care for details. Deserved an Oscar.

The Hollywood movie “Alive” is good made early 90’s with Ethan Hawke. BUT this movie is different… it’s beautifully crude and we all hurt for Numa. Only 10 more days… but yep great movie! Viva Uruguay!
