I love this little generic mayfly pattern. The combination of a wing case and some soft hackle for legs and movement make it a fantastic step up for the beginner fly tyer looking to move onto something a bit more difficult than the Hare and Copper a lot of us start off with here in NZ. As well as that the trout seem to like them so why wouldn't you want a few in your fly box.
Happy Tying Everyone.

Great clip Braedan. I was particularly interested to see how you dealt with the hackle as i tend to end up a bit bulky in the head. It's always good to learn something new. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers mate. Yeah used to have same problem so decided to just get rid of the excess rather than pushing it around to join the rest. Cheers mate

Nice proportions. Another option for the "legs" is to leave in the tips of the PT used for the wing case (a bit longer than in the vid before you snipped) and tie them down up to the eye. Then draw them back and down under the fly after forming the thorax and before bringing over the wing case.

Cheers 👍 Absolutely. Definitely a good way to go about it as well. It's a method that gives great looking legs

Braeden, excellent presentation and execution of a nicely proportioned nymph, it looks just right. Two questions, are the fibres on the hen saddle patch short enough for tying on the Kamasan B 110 in size 14 and 16; do you fish this nymph as a dropper in heavier water such as on the Tongariro, or is it reserved for sight fishing?

Hi Reg, thank you very much you can definitely fit the feathers on a 14 and 16 b110 there are some smaller ones but also techniques you can use to fit larger feathers on and tie the rest as I have in this video. If you look up Tightline Productions he has a video called using large feathers on small hooks which is a great demonstration of a technique to do it. As for where I fish it you can use it for all of the above tie to the size you need and have at it. You could also put a bead in front of it and some lead wraps and make it your bomb nymph as well. All the best with it I hope it goes well

Nice can you use natural grizzly neck dry fly hackle as a soft hackle as a substitute? Or would it not be so effective compared with the hen soft.. ?
@southofnorthflyfishing
@southofnorthflyfishing 9 ай бұрын
Hey, the soft hackle has a lot of movement which is what you are after by using it. The dry fly hackle has very stiff Fibres so you would lose all that movement by using it.

Nice one Braedan. I'm very new to tying, so learning plenty from your videos. Is it easier to get the dubbing onto the waxed thread you are using over using the nano silk you have used in other clips? I seem to have a few problems getting it to bind on like you do. Cheers

Hi glad to hear they're helping. To be fair I tie this pattern with nano silk as well just had the waxed thread handy which I use a fair bit as well so went with that as does the job for this as well. Technically it's easier with the waxed thread I think that being said if you're using nano silk or something similar a little bit of wax on it can help to bind the dubbing noodle tight although you don't have to. If not already just make sure when you are applying the dubbing you twist with your fingers the same way when making the dubbing noodle. Long story short - a bit easier to get a tight dubbing noodle with the waxed thread but can be done with nano silk (with and without wax on it) . All the best with your tying hope you are enjoying it.

Cheers mate. That must be where I'm going wrong, not twisting the same way. Its interesting how little material you use compared to what it looks like on the camera!Thanks for your help

@@haydenstewart1659 hopefully goes well for you. It's one of the main things I've elanred with tying is that a little can go a long way. Some of my early flies were shocking (although would catch fish) but just too much dubbing. Big bulky things. A little can go a long way. Generally I'll use a small amount and build it up rather than putting too much on and hoping it'll be alright. It's much easier in my mind to build a dubbing biddy up with thin dubbing noodles than try to cram heaps in there I'd that makes sense 👍
